Some methods for determining the profile functions of inhomogeneous media

The problem of determining the electric permittivity of an inhomogeneous dielectric medium is considered. Two analytical methods and one numerical method for solving this problem are presented. All these methods utilize the reflection coefficient measured as a function of the angular spectrum variable. This allows measurements at a fixed frequency, and these methods, therefore, can be used when the medium being studied is dispensive. A few examples are provided and some comments are made regarding the stability of solutions obtained using the various methods.

Spatial-detection effects in laser radar.

Determination of a relation for the detector-aperture size for spatially coherent detection when dependent scattering is present. This relation is applied to several realistic laser-radar situations. It is concluded that no distortion of laser-radar signal signatures due to spatial-detection effects should be expected for present typical operating conditions (i.e., mean wavelength of the source = 0.6943 micrometer, and the diameter of the receiving aperture is about 10 cm). With development of longer-wavelength laser radars, in order to monitor signal returns at pollutant-gas absorption lines concomitantly larger receiver apertures must be used or else widely varying signal signatures will result even though similar conditions prevail.

Radiation from a parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma layer.

An analytical solution for radiation from a truncated parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma slab is obtained by solving the Hilbert problem associated with a certain singular integral equation. The technique has the advantage that the edge condition is easily shown to be satisfied, and numerical results can be obtained with excellent accuracy. Numerical results are presented for a variety of dielectric and plasma slabs, parallel-plate separations, and aperture-to-slab distances.

Study of a remote probing technique for inhomogeneous media.

Study of remote probing of inhomogeneous media making use of the known reflection coefficient of the medium as a function of the varied incident angle of the probing plane wave. An analytical method is developed for processing these reflection coefficient data. A critical evaluation of the numerical aspects of the method is presented.
