International Solar-Terrestrial Program Key Parameter Visualization Tool Data: USA_NASA_DDF_ISTP_IM_KP_0127

The Global Geospace Science Program (GGS) is designed to improve greatly the understanding of the flow of energy, mass and momentum in the solar-terrestrial environment with particular emphasis on "Geospace". The Global Geospace Science Program is the US contribution to the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Science Initiative. This CD-ROM issue describes the WIND and POLAR spacecraft, the scientific experiments carried onboard, the Theoretical and Ground Based investigations which constitute the US Global Geospace Science Program and the ISTP Data Systems which support the data acquisition and analysis effort. The International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program (ISTP) Key Parameter Visualization Tool (KPVT), provided on the CD-ROM, was developed at the ISTP Science Planning and Operations Facility (SPOF). The KPVT is a generic software package for visualizing the key parameter data produced from all ISTP missions, interactively and simultaneously. The tool is designed to facilitate correlative displays of ISTP data from multiple spacecraft and instruments, and thus the selection of candidate events and data quality control. The software, written in IDL, includes a graphical/widget user interface, and runs on many platforms, including various UNIX workstations, Alpha/Open VMS, Macintosh (680x0 and PowerPC), and PC/Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.

Coalescence of recurrent streams of different sizes and amplitudes

Two corotating streams per solar rotation, separated by the heliospheric plasma sheet, were observed at 1 AU during 1974, and the streams recurred four times during the interval from day 145 to day 255. A single compound stream per solar rotation was observed at 5.5 - 6.0 AU during the corresponding interval from day 165 to day 275, indicating that the two recurrent streams observed at 1 AU coalesced between 1 AU and 6 AU. The average maximum speed of one of the recurrent streams was 805 km/s while that of the other recurrent stream was 705 km/s. The compound stream was not formed by the overtaking of the slow stream by the fast stream. Rather, it was probably formed by a process involving both filtering (due to the fact that the slow stream was 50 percent wider than the fast stream) and a geometrical effect.

Large-scale fluctuations in the solar wind at 1 AU - 1978-1982

The large-scale fluctuations in the strength of the magnetic field B and the bulk speed V at 1 AU were investigated on the basis of hourly averages of IMP 8 and ISEE 3 data compiled by Couzens and King (1986). The power spectra of the intermediate frequency fluctuations in B at 1 AU had the form of a power law with exponent 1.92 + or - 0.06 during the 1978-1982 interval. The contributions of jumps to the spectra of the large-scale fluctuations in B and V were studied for the interval from days 226 to 365, 1978, which is representative of other such intervals. Of the jumps in B, 22 percent have the signature of a forward or reverse shock.

Large-scale fluctuations in the interplanetary medium

Power spectra of measurements of the magnetic field strength in the heliosphere obtained by Voyager 1 between 1 AU and 9 AU have the form of a power law f exp -a from periods of several hours to at least 6 days. The exponent was a = 2.0 + or - 0.05 for all of the spectra considered, which is the exponent for a series of steps and for Burgers' (1971) turbulence. Spectra of large-scale speed fluctuations also have the form f exp - b from a period of a few hours to periods greater than 13 days in the region from 1 AU to 8.9 AU. The exponent b is generally somewhat larger than b = 2, implying some 'persistence' of the speed fluctuations. The low-frequency cutoff (outer cutoff) of the power law increases from a period of 6.5 days at 1 AU to 26 days at (6.1-8.9) AU, which can be attributed to: (1) the coalescence of interaction regions and (2) a transfer of energy from the spectrum of large-scale speed fluctuations. The outer cutoff of the spectrum of speed fluctuations increases from a period of 13 days at 1 AU to 26 days between a few AU and 8.9 AU. Both the magnetic field strength fluctuations and the speed fluctuations have fractal behavior, suggesting that they are self affine rather than dominated by a few large discontinuities.

Interactive Digital Signal Processor

Interactive Digital Signal Processor, IDSP, consists of set of time series analysis "operators" based on various algorithms commonly used for digital signal analysis. Processing of digital signal time series to extract information usually achieved by applications of number of fairly standard operations. IDSP excellent teaching tool for demonstrating application for time series operators to artificially generated signals.

Networking DEC and IBM computers

Local Area Networking of DEC and IBM computers within the structure of the ISO-OSI Seven Layer Reference Model at a raw signaling speed of 1 Mops or greater are discussed. After an introduction to the ISO-OSI Reference Model nd the IEEE-802 Draft Standard for Local Area Networks (LANs), there follows a detailed discussion and comparison of the products available from a variety of manufactures to perform this networking task. A summary of these products is presented in a table.

Interactive digital signal processor

The Interactive Digital Signal Processor (IDSP) is examined. It consists of a set of time series analysis Operators each of which operates on an input file to produce an output file. The operators can be executed in any order that makes sense and recursively, if desired. The operators are the various algorithms used in digital time series analysis work. User written operators can be easily interfaced to the sysatem. The system can be operated both interactively and in batch mode. In IDSP a file can consist of up to n (currently n=8) simultaneous time series. IDSP currently includes over thirty standard operators that range from Fourier transform operations, design and application of digital filters, eigenvalue analysis, to operators that provide graphical output, allow batch operation, editing and display information.

IMP F and G phase 1 magnetic field analysis

The program developed to analyze magnetic field data from the magnetic field experiment flown in IMP F is reported. The analysis converts the raw X, Y, Z sensor data as received on the magnetic field experiment tape into vector measurements of the ambient magnetic field observed by the experiment. These data are computed for four frames of reference -- apparent, payload, solar ecliptic and solar magnetospheric. In addition 20.45 second statistics are computed for the last three coordinate systems. Finally, a summary tape is produced containing detailed data and sequence statistics as well as the output from the autocorrelation computer, trajectory data and identification information.

Interactive graphics system for IBM 1800 computer

A FORTRAN compatible software system that has been developed to provide an interactive graphics capability for the IBM 1800 computer is described. The interactive graphics hardware consists of a Hewlett-Packard 1300A cathode ray tube, Sanders photopen, digital to analog converters, pulse counter, and necessary interface. The hardware is available from IBM as several related RPQ's. The software developed permits the application programmer to use IBM 1800 FORTRAN to develop a display on the cathode ray tube which consists of one or more independent units called pictures. The software permits a great deal of flexibility in the manipulation of these pictures and allows the programmer to use the photopen to interact with the displayed data and make decisions based on information returned by the photopen.
