ComDMFT v.2.0: Fully self-consistent ab initio GW+EDMFT for the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials

ComDMFT is a parallel computational package designed to study the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials from first principles. Our approach is based on the combination of first-principles methods and dynamical mean field theories. In version 2.0, we implemented fully-diagrammatic GW+EDMFT from first-principles self-consistently. In this approach, correlated electrons are treated within full GW+EDMFT and the rest are treated within full-GW, seamlessly. Further, this implementation enables the electronic structure calculation of quantum materials with weak, intermediate, and strong electron correlation without prior knowledge of the degree of electron correlation.

Charge self-consistent density functional theory plus ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson theory for correlated materials

We present a charge self-consistent density functional theory combined with the ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson (DFT+gRISB) formalism for studying correlated materials. Here, this method is applied to SrVO 3 and NiO, representing prototypical correlated metals and charge-transfer insulators. For SrVO 3 , we demonstrate that DFT+gRISB yields an accurate equilibrium volume and effective mass close to experimentally observed values. Regarding NiO, DFT+gRISB enables the simultaneous description of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard bands, significantly enhancing the accuracy of the original DFT+RISB approach. Furthermore, the calculated equilibrium volume and spectral function reasonably agree with experimental observations.

Infinite-layer nickelates as Ni-e $g$ Hund’s metals

The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-$δ$ Sr $δ$ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical viewpoint, this class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil a physics hidden in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund’s coupling in Ni-$d$ orbitals gives rise to multiple signatures of Hund’s metallic phase in Ni-e $g$ orbitals. The proposed picture of the nickelates as an e $g$ (two orbital) Hund’s metal differs from the picture of the Fe-based superconductors as a five orbital Hund’s metal as well as the picture of the cuprates as doped charge transfer insulators. Our finding uncovers a new class of the Hund’s metals and has potential implications for the broad range of correlated two orbital systems away from half-filling.

Tetragonal Kondo Insulator EuCd 2 Sb 2 Discovered via High Pressure High Temperature Synthesis

Abstract Magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials heavily rely on the crystal structure even in the same chemical compositions. In this study, it is demonstrated that a layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 structure can be obtained by treating bulk trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (600 °C). Magnetization measurements of the newly formed layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperature ( T N ) around 16 K, which is significantly higher than that ( T N ≈ 7 K) of trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 , consistent with heat capacity measurements. Moreover, bad metal behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the resistivity shows a dramatic increase around the Neel temperature. Electronic structure calculations with local density approximation dynamic mean–field theory (LDA+DMFT) show that this material is strongly correlated with well‐formed large magnetic moments, due to Hund's coupling, which is known to dramatically suppress the Kondo scale.

Accelerated impurity solver for DMFT and its diagrammatic extensions

Here, we present ComCTQMC, a GPU accelerated quantum impurity solver. It uses the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) algorithm wherein the partition function is expanded in terms of the hybridisation function (CT-HYB). ComCTQMC supports both partition and worm-space measurements, and it uses improved estimators and the reduced density matrix to improve observable measurements whenever possible. ComCTQMC efficiently measures all one and two-particle Green's functions, all static observables which commute with the local Hamiltonian, and the occupation of each impurity orbital. ComCTQMC can solve complex-valued impurities with crystal fields that are hybridized to both fermionic and bosonic baths. Most importantly, ComCTQMC utilizes graphical processing units (GPUs), if available, to dramatically accelerate the CTQMC algorithm when the Hilbert space is sufficiently large. We demonstrate acceleration by a factor of over 600 (100) in a simulation of δ-Pu at 600 K with (without) crystal fields. In easier problems, the GPU offers less impressive acceleration or even decelerates the CTQMC. Here we describe the theory, algorithms, and structure used by ComCTQMC in order to achieve this set of features and level of acceleration.

Fermi-liquid theory and divergences of the two-particle irreducible vertex in the periodic Anderson lattice

Here we analyze the divergences of the irreducible vertex function in dynamical mean field theory, which may indicate either a nonphysical breakdown of the perturbation theory or a response to some physical phenomenon. To investigate this question, we construct a quasiparticle vertex from the diverging irreducible vertex functions. This vertex describes the scattering between quasiparticles and quasiholes in a Fermi liquid. We show that the quasparticle vertex does not diverge in the charge channel, wherein the irreducible vertex does diverge; and we show that the quasiparticle vertex does diverge in the spin channel, wherein the irreducible vertex does not diverge. This divergence occurs at the Mott transition, wherein the Fermi-liquid theory breaks down. Both the half filled Hubbard and Anderson lattices are investigated. In general, our results support that the divergences of the irreducible vertex function do not indicate a nonphysical failure of the perturbation theory. Instead, the divergences are the mathematical consequence of inverting a matrix (the local charge susceptibility) which accumulates increasingly negative diagonal elements as the Hubbard interaction suppresses charge fluctuations. Indeed, we find that the first divergences of the irreducible vertex in both Hubbard and Anderson lattices occurs near the maximum magnitude of the (negative) vertex-connected part of the charge susceptibility.
