Shuttle vertical fin flowfield by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method

The flow properties in a model flowfield, simulating the shuttle vertical fin, determined using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method. The case analyzed corresponds to an orbit height of 225 km with the freestream velocity vector orthogonal to the fin surface. Contour plots of the flowfield distributions of density, temperature, velocity and flow angle are presented. The results also include mean molecular collision frequency (which reaches 1/60 sec near the surface), collision frequency density (approaches 7 x 10 to the 18/cu m sec at the surface) and the mean free path (19 m at the surface).

Transportation - Space Station interfaces

A study aimed at identifying conceptual mechanisms for the transfer and manipulation of various masses in the vicinity of or on the Space Station is presented. These transfers encompass mass transfers involved in the arrivals or departures of various vehicles including the Shuttle, Orbital Manuever Vehicles (OMVs), and Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTVs); point-to-point mass transfer of a nonroutine nature around the Space Station; and routine transfer of cargo and spacecraft around the Space Station, including the mating and processing of OMVs, OTVs, propellants, and payloads.

Rapid helium-air analyzer can measure other binary gas mixtures

Instrument comprised of an ionization pressure gage and a diaphragm pressure gage consisting of strain gages to make a four-arm bridge, and a ratiometer is constructed for analyzing gas mixtures. The ratio of the outputs of the two gages is proportional to the mixture composition.
