A polymorphic reconfigurable emulator for parallel simulation

Microprocessor and arithmetic support chip technology was applied to the design of a reconfigurable emulator for real time flight simulation. The system developed consists of master control system to perform all man machine interactions and to configure the hardware to emulate a given aircraft, and numerous slave compute modules (SCM) which comprise the parallel computational units. It is shown that all parts of the state equations can be worked on simultaneously but that the algebraic equations cannot (unless they are slowly varying). Attempts to obtain algorithms that will allow parellel updates are reported. The word length and step size to be used in the SCM's is determined and the architecture of the hardware and software is described.

Choice of method for discretization of continuous systems

The paper discusses and compares several common methods of discretizing the transfer function of a continuous control system so that a digital computer can be used. The discretization effect on the frequency response attenuation of the simple transfer function G(s) = 1/(s + 1) is illustrated for the Tusting, Boxer-Thaler, Madwed, linear segment approximation, and stair-step with half period advanced methods. The input frequency must be significantly lower than one-half the sampling error to have negligible discretization error. Phase differences due to discretization are also plotted, and it is seen that the zero-order hold contributes much more phase shift than that due to discretization. In situations where zero-order hold must follow a computer, the method of discretization of a continuous system is not a major factor if phase shift is important.

The application of charge-coupled device processors in automatic-control systems

The application of charge-coupled device (CCD) processors to automatic-control systems is suggested. CCD processors are a new form of semiconductor component with the unique ability to process sampled signals on an analog basis. Specific implementations of controllers are suggested for linear time-invariant, time-varying, and nonlinear systems. Typical processing time should be only a few microseconds. This form of technology may become competitive with microprocessors and minicomputers in addition to supplementing them.

Real time flight simulation methodology

Substitutional methods for digitization, input signal-dependent integrator approximations, and digital autopilot design were developed. The software framework of a simulator design package is described. Included are subroutines for iterative designs of simulation models and a rudimentary graphics package.

Real time flight simulation methodology

An example sensitivity study is presented to demonstrate how a digital autopilot designer could make a decision on minimum sampling rate for computer specification. It consists of comparing the simulated step response of an existing analog autopilot and its associated aircraft dynamics to the digital version operating at various sampling frequencies and specifying a sampling frequency that results in an acceptable change in relative stability. In general, the zero order hold introduces phase lag which will increase overshoot and settling time. It should be noted that this solution is for substituting a digital autopilot for a continuous autopilot. A complete redesign could result in results which more closely resemble the continuous results or which conform better to original design goals.

The Investigation of Optimal Discrete Approximations for Real Time Flight Simulations

The results are presented of an investigation of discrete approximations for real time flight simulation. Major topics discussed include: (1) consideration of the particular problem of approximation of continuous autopilots by digital autopilots; (2) use of Bode plots and synthesis of transfer functions by asymptotic fits in a warped frequency domain; (3) an investigation of the various substitution formulas, including the effects of nonlinearities; (4) use of pade approximation to the solution of the matrix exponential arising from the discrete state equations; and (5) an analytical integration of the state equation using interpolated input.

An investigation of potential applications of OP-SAPS: Operational sampled analog processors

The impact of charge-coupled device (CCD) processors on future instrumentation was investigated. The CCD devices studied process sampled analog data and are referred to as OP-SAPS - operational sampled analog processors. Preliminary studies into various architectural configurations for systems composed of OP-SAPS show that they have potential in such diverse applications as pattern recognition and automatic control. It appears probable that OP-SAPS may be used to construct computing structures which can serve as special peripherals to large-scale computer complexes used in real time flight simulation. The research was limited to the following benchmark programs: (1) face recognition, (2) voice command and control, (3) terrain classification, and (4) terrain identification. A small amount of effort was spent on examining a method by which OP-SAPS may be used to decrease the limiting ground sampling distance encountered in remote sensing from satellites.

Progress on the development of skin friction sensors.

A skin friction measuring system is described which will operate to 2000 F for short periods of time and continuously to 1300 F. A prototype system has been constructed and is being placed in operation. Information on alternative feasible systems is presented. Emphasis is placed on presenting research results in the form of useful design information and experimental data.
