Analysis of TQCM surface contamination adsorbed during the Spacelab I Mission

The Temperature-Controlled Quartz Crystal Microbalance (TQCM) system was flown on the Spacelab I Mission as part of the Induced Environment Contamination Monitor to monitor surface contamination (SC) in the payload bay. SC on the five sensors of the TQCM was analyzed by means of IR spectroscopy, scanning electron spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. The amount of SC ranged from 1.4 micrograms/sq cm for the -Z sensor to 39.9 micrograms/sq cm for the +X sensor. The IR analysis showed strong CH2, CH3, and carbonyl absorption bands, indicative of ester and polyester compounds found in adhesives, plasticizers, and tape. The particulates (mostly ranging from 1 micron to 20 microns in size) were mainly composed of Mg, Al, Al2O3, and Si, and probably originated in the solid rocket firings.

Interactions of surfaces with the solar plasma

The induced environment is the main source of contamination on a spacecraft. The contamination of surfaces by volatile condensable material (VCM) present on spacecraft is being studied by many investigators both in the laboratory and space. In addition to VCM, the space environment is also a contributing factor in the contamination of surfaces. The effects of the interaction of the solar plasma with surfaces is examined. Plasma particles impact at energies in the multi-kilovolt range and penetrate and become trapped in surfaces. Results show that protons can penetrate up to 600 monolayers into surfaces and reach saturation concentrations of 6%.

Method for attaching a fused-quartz mirror to a conductive metal substrate

A fused-quartz mirror is attached to a conductive metal substrate by the following steps: tinning one surface of a fused-quartz mirror with a solder of substantially pure indium; tinning a metallic substrate with an indium eutectic alloy consisting essentially of indium bismuth, lead and tin having a melting point substantially below that of indium; heating the eutectic alloy to a temperature substantially above its melting point, but below that of the solder; floating the mirror into place, and subsequently cooling the alloy to a temperature substantially below its melting point.

Thermoelectrically-cooled quartz microbalance

Temperature of microbalance can be maintained at ambient temperature or held at some other desired temperature. Microbalance has tow-stage thermoelectric device that controls temperature of quartz crystal. Heat can be pumped to or from balance by Peltier effect.

OGO-6 gas-surface energy transfer experiment

The kinetic energy flux of the upper atmosphere was analyzed using OGO-6 data. Energy transfer between 10 microwatts/sq cm and 0.1 W/sq cm was measured by short-term frequency changes of temperature-sensitive quartz crystals used in the energy transfer probe. The condition of the surfaces was continuously monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance to determine the effect surface contamination had on energy accommodation. Results are given on the computer analysis and laboratory tests performed to optimize the operation of the energy transfer probe. Data are also given on the bombardment of OGO-6 surfaces by high energy particles. The thermoelectrically-cooled quartz crystal microbalance is described in terms of its development and applications.
