Measurements of the Jovian radiation belts

The University of California at San Diego trapped radiation detector measured proton and electron fluxes, angular distributions, and energy spectra throughout the Pioneer 10 fly by of Jupiter in December 1973. The instrumentation and calibrations are described, and good values for particle fluxes in the inner and outer regions are presented. The major features of the Jovian radiation belts are described, with preliminary discussions of their meanings.

Correlation of Kp with the substorm-injected plasma boundary

The local time position of the low-energy substorm-injected plasma boundary in the dusk to midnight region of the magnetosphere as observed by the geostationary satellite ATS 5 is found to be correlated with the interpolated Kp index. Considering the time resolution of Kp, the correlation is found to be quite close but dependent on season. An estimate of the overall shape and position of the low-energy boundary within this region of the magnetosphere as a function of Kp is found by using a fit to the authors' winter data correlation in conjunction with a fit of data presented by Carpenter (1967) concerning the Kp-related radial positioning of the plasmapause boundary in the postmidnight region. This analysis results in a spiral structure, the scale of which depends on Kp.

Radiation belts of Jupiter

Pioneer 10 counted relativistic electrons throughout the magnetosphere of Jupiter, with the greatest fluxes being inside 20 Jupiter radii. The peak flux of electrons with energy greater than 50 MeV was 13 million per square centimeter per second at the innermost penetration of the radiation belts.

Substorm injection boundaries

An improved magnetospheric electric field model is used to compute the initial locations of particles injected by several substorms. Trajectories are traced from the time of their encounter with the ATS-5 satellite backwards to the onset time given by ground-based magnetometers. A spiral shaped inner boundary of injection is found which is quite similar to that found by a statistical analysis. This injection boundary is shown to move in an energy dependent fashion which can explain the soft energy spectra observed at the inner edge of the electrons plasma sheet.

Digital multichannel photometry with digicons

The digital system is described and compared to other sensor systems. The digicon system starts with a photocathode, has magnetic focusing of the accelerated photoelectrons, and the electrons hit an array of solid-state diodes. These characteristics, however, are the only ones which are applicable to both the digicon and the other systems. With the digicon system, instead of attempting to read the resulting charges on the diodes by probing electrons, or by a charge transfer out, an actual physical wire is connected to each separate diode. This provides a huge advantage in improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Plasma convection in the vicinity of the geosynchronous orbit.

An analytic function respresenting the quiet time magnetospheric electric field has been constructed with which it is possible to compute complete particle trajectories in a fraction of a second. The function was determined by a trial-and-error procedure such that it provides reasonable explanations for the characteristics of the plasma observed by the geosynchronous satellite ATS 5. It is believed that the model field is usefully accurate within the region of 5 to 7 earth radii on the dawn side of the magnetosphere and 5 to 10 earth radii on the dusk side. At a fixed distance of 6.7 earth radii the model field peaks at a value of 1.2 mV/m near local midnight and is at a minimum of 0.04 mV/m near 1900 LT.
