Film calibration for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope

The sensitometry and film calibration effort for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope is summarized. The apparatus and procedures used are described together with the two types of flight film used, Kodak SO-212 and SO-242. The sensitometry and processing of the flight film are discussed, and the results are presented in the form of the characteristic curves and related data. The use of copy films is also discussed.

A long-lived coronal arch system observed in X-rays

A large long-lived soft X-ray emitting arch system was observed during the last Skylab mission. This arcade stayed in the same approximate position for several solar rotations. It is suggested that these long-lived arches owe their stability to the stable coronal magnetic-field configuration. A global constant-alpha force-free magnetic-field analysis, as developed by Nakagawa et al. (1977), is used to describe the arches, and results in a marked resemblance between the theoretical magnetic-field configuration and the observed X-ray emitting feature.

A long-lived coronal X-ray arcade

A large, long-lived, soft X-ray emitting arch system observed during a Skylab mission is analyzed. The supposition is that these arches owe their stability to the stable coronal magnetic-field configuration. A global constant alpha force-free magnetic field analysis, is used to describe the arches which stayed in the same approximate position for several solar rotations. A marked resemblance is noted between the theoretical magnetic field configuration and the observed X-ray emmitting feature.

Contamination from Skylab as determined from the solar coronagraph data

The white light solar coronagraph was one of the scientific telescopes flown on Skylab to study the sun. It studied the sun's atmosphere located from 0.5 to 5.0 solar radii above the sun's limb. Such a telescope is so sensitive to contamination around the spacecraft that it caused a major contamination abatement program to be initiated at the conception of Skylab. The coronagraph's data is analyzed showing the successfulness of that abatement program.

A solar flare bibliography for 1973 through 1975

The open literature for 1973 through 1975 was searched for publications with flare information that might pertain to the analysis of the Skylab data. The resulting bibliography is divided into three sections: (1) results from Skylab, (2) results from ground-based data during the Skylab time period, (3) other pertinent publications.

Results of correlative studies of a complex solar active region /McMath 12387/ during the Skylab mission

Results of correlative studies employing Skylab/ATM X-Ray Telescope filter-heliograms, solar magnetograms, and H alpha spectroheliograms of the complex solar active region McMath 12387 for 10-18 June 1973 are presented. Evolutionary changes within the complex region are discussed. Magnetic field calculations, using both potential and force-free models, have been performed and the results are presented. We also determine temperatures, emission measures, and electron densities and show the variation with time of the X-ray emission from the entire complex.
