NASTRAN Structural Model for the Large 64-meter Antenna Pedestal, Part 1

Static analysis and a computer structural model for the large 64-m antenna pedestal are developed using the MSC version of the NASTRAN program. This model was necessary to conduct a variety of hydrostatic bearing rehabilitation studies. The results obtained from the model show that the top surface deflections due to pad loads are in good agreement with the results previously obtained from a simplified "shortcut' analytical model, and also in agreement with field measurements. In addition, the displacement and force distributions as well as the state of stress and strain are obtained.

Evaluation of Antenna Foundation Elastic Modulus

An experiment to measure the elastic deflection of the DSS 14 concrete pedestal under the weight of the antenna was conducted in February 1983 and is compared to a similiar experiment made in 1968. Comparison of the results confirms the decrease in elastic modulus measured on core samples recently taken from the pedestal.

Rehabilitation of 64-meter-antenna radial bearing

The performances of the radial bearings on three 64-meter antennas are presented. Explanations for the distortion of the bearing at DSS 14 are made and the repairs are described. Recommendations for future tests and action are given.

Wind speed statistics for Goldstone, California, anemometer sites

An exploratory wind survey at an antenna complex was summarized statistically for application to future windmill designs. Data were collected at six locations from a total of 10 anemometers. Statistics include means, standard deviations, cubes, pattern factors, correlation coefficients, and exponents for power law profile of wind speed. Curves presented include: mean monthly wind speeds, moving averages, and diurnal variation patterns. It is concluded that three of the locations have sufficiently strong winds to justify consideration for windmill sites.

Stress distribution in a semi-infinite body symmetrically loaded over a circular area

Algorithms are developed for computing stresses in a semi-infinite body when loaded by a uniform pressure acting over a circular area. The algorithm allows easy determination of any stress component in a semi-infinite body having a known Poisson's ratio. Example curves are plotted for Portland cement grout and metal representative values.

Analysis of a suspension system for a wheel rolling on a flat track

A flexure strut wheel suspension system is described which keeps a wheel flat against the track and maintains a small interface moment. Equations are presented for the evaluation of this moment. A comparison of the flexure strut system is made with a rigid link design containing pivot bearings.

Lateral forces induced by a misaligned roller

The magnitude of the lateral force induced by a roller, misaligned in its direction of travel is considered. Consequences of the induced lateral forces and examples of wheel suspension designs are given.

Wind power prediction models

Investigations were performed to predict the power available from the wind at the Goldstone, California, antenna site complex. The background for power prediction was derived from a statistical evaluation of available wind speed data records at this location and at nearby locations similarly situated within the Mojave desert. In addition to a model for power prediction over relatively long periods of time, an interim simulation model that produces sample wind speeds is described. The interim model furnishes uncorrelated sample speeds at hourly intervals that reproduce the statistical wind distribution at Goldstone. A stochastic simulation model to provide speed samples representative of both the statistical speed distributions and correlations is also discussed.
