Refinement of the Loran-C receiver system for general aviation use was described. The capability to provide area navigation sometimes called random navigation (RNAV) was accomplished by providing new software. Microcomputers were used to accomplish the calculations which were performed in flight to demonstrate these devices are cost effective in the implementation of Loran-C navigational information.

Weather data communication and utilization

The communication of weather data to aircraft is discussed. Problems encountered because of the great quantities of data available and the limited capacity to transfer this via radio link to an aircraft are discussed. Display devices are discussed.

The increased availability of Loran signals in the United States encouraged consideration of Loran for airborne applications. High quality signal processing to obtain effective signal-to-noise ratios which permit good reliability in position determination consistent with airborne applications is considered. Techniques for deriving air navigation quality information from Loran-C were investigated.

Efficient transfer of weather information to the pilot in flight

Efficient methods for providing weather information to the pilot in flight are summarized. Use of discrete communications channels in the aeronautical, VHF band or subcarriers in the VOR navigation band are considered the best possibilities. Data rates can be provided such that inputs to the ground based transmitters from 2400 band telephone lines are easily accommodated together with additional data. The crucial weather data considered for uplinking are identified as radar reflectivity patterns relating to precipitation, spherics data, hourly sequences, nowcasts, forecasts, cloud top heights with freezing and icing conditions, the critical weather map and satellite maps. NEXRAD, the ground based, Doppler weather radar which will produce an improved weather product also encourages use of an uplink to fully utilize its capability to improve air safety.

Specific configurations of first and second order all digital phase locked loops were analyzed for both ideal and additive gaussian noise inputs. In addition, a design for a hardware digital phase locked loop capable of either first or second order operation was evaluated along with appropriate experimental data obtained from testing of the hardware loop. All parameters chosen for the analysis and the design of the digital phase locked loop were consistent with an application to an Omega navigation receiver although neither the analysis nor the design are limited to this application. For all cases tested, the experimental data showed close agreement with the analytical results indicating that the Markov chain model for first and second order digital phase locked loops are valid.
