Search for Associated Production of a Higgs Boson and Two Vector Bosons via Vector-Boson Scattering at s = 13 TeV

A search for Higgs boson ( H ) production in association with two vector bosons ( V = W , Z ) via vector-boson scattering (VBS) is presented using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . Events containing two forward jets consistent with VBS, a large-radius jet from the decay of a boosted H to a pair of b quarks, and zero, one, or two charged leptons coming from V decays are selected. The process is excluded at 95% confidence level for observed (expected) values of the V V H H coupling modifier κ 2 V outside the interval 0.40 < κ 2 V < 1.60 ( 0.34 < κ 2 V < 1.66 ), assuming standard model values for all other couplings, thus establishing a novel probe of the V V H H interaction. Constraints are also set on the individual κ 2 W and κ 2 Z coupling modifiers and on the allowed region in the κ 2 W - κ 2 Z plane.

Full event interpretation with machine-learning-based particle-flow reconstruction in the CMS detector

The particle-flow (PF) algorithm constructs a global description of each particle collision by producing a comprehensive list of final-state particles, and is central to event reconstruction in the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The existing PF implementation relies on physics-motivated heuristics and assumptions that can be replaced by machine-learning (ML) models trained directly on simulated data and naturally suited to modern graphics processing units (GPUs). A state-of-the-art ML-based PF (MLPF) reconstruction algorithm, implemented within the CMS software framework, is presented. The MLPF algorithm performs a learnable full-event reconstruction on GPUs, generalizes across detector conditions and collision energies, and replaces multiple modular reconstruction steps with a single unified model. Physics performance comparable to standard PF reconstruction is achieved in both simulation and data, with improved jet energy resolution and inference time. In simulated top quark-antiquark events under LHC Run-3 (2023-2024) conditions, the jet energy resolution improves by 10-20% for jets with transverse momentum between 30-100 GeV. Inference time is evaluated using simulated multijet events, with a median of $20\,\hbox {ms}$ per event on an Nvidia L4 GPU, compared to approximately $110\,\hbox {ms}$ for the standard CMS PF reconstruction.

Evidence of Z Z γ Production and Observation of 4 ℓ γ in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

Evidence of the production of two Z bosons and a photon in proton-proton collisions is reported for the first time in CMS. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . Evidence for the process p p → Z Z γ → 4 ℓ γ ( ℓ = e , μ ), with an observed (expected) significance of 3.7 (3.1) standard deviations in a fiducial region defined by p T γ > 20 GeV , | η γ | < 2.4 , Δ R ( ℓ , γ ) > 0.5 , m Z between 60 and 120 GeV, and the invariant mass of either of the two Z bosons combined with the photon ( m Z γ ) larger than 100 GeV, is reported. The measured (predicted) fiducial cross section is 60 - 22 + 27 ab ( 47.56 ± 0.04 ab ). Additionally, the inclusive production of p p → 4 ℓ γ is studied by removing the m Z γ requirement to include final state radiation where one Z boson decays to 2 ℓ γ , yielding an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.2) standard deviations and a measured (predicted) fiducial cross section of 156 - 35 + 39 ab ( 99.97 ± 0.09 ab ).

Observation of Long-Range Collective Flow in O + O and Ne + Ne Collisions and Implications for Nuclear Structure Studies

The long-range collective flow of particles produced in oxygen-oxygen ( O + O ) and neon-neon ( Ne + Ne ) collisions is measured with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data samples were collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV, with integrated luminosities of 7 nb - 1 and 0.8 nb - 1 for O + O and Ne + Ne collisions, respectively. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations are measured over nearly five units of pseudorapidity. Significant elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow harmonics are observed in both systems. The ratios of v n coefficients between Ne + Ne and O + O collisions suggest sensitivity to the intrinsic nuclear structure of the respective Ne and O ions. Hydrodynamic models with ab initio nuclear structure inputs qualitatively reproduce the collision-overlap dependence of both the v n values and the Ne + Ne to O + O ratios. These measurements provide new constraints when modeling the interplay of nuclear structure and collective dynamics in collisions of O 16 and Ne 20 ions, respectively.

Observation of the Jet Diffusion Wake Using Dijets in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Energetic quarks and gluons traversing a hot and dense quark-gluon plasma deposit energy and momentum into the medium before hadronizing to collimated sprays of particles, known as jets. This energy-momentum deposition is expected to produce medium responses, collectively known as jet wakes, with “diffusion wake” denoting a depletion of particles in the direction opposite to the propagating jet. The diffusion wake is studied by comparing dijet-hadron correlations measured in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions. The analysis uses PbPb and pp data recorded at a nucleon-nucleon (NN) center-of-mass energy s NN = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. By exploring how the dijet-hadron correlation distributions differ for various pseudorapidity separations of the two jets in the dijet, the presence of a jet diffusion wake is firmly established. The diffusion wake signal has a significance greater than 5 standard deviations for charged particles in the transverse momentum range 1 < p T < 2 GeV . The measurements are compared with model predictions with and without jet wake effects, providing new insights into quark-gluon plasma properties and the formation of jet-induced wakes.

Combined measurements and interpretations of Higgs boson production and decay in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Combined measurements of Higgs boson production and decay rates are reported, representing the most comprehensive study performed by the CMS Collaboration to date. The included analyses use proton–proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . The statistical combination is based on analyses that measure the following decay channels: H → γγ, H → ZZ, H → WW, H → ππ, H → bb, H → μμ, and H → Zγ. Information in the events from each decay channel is used to target multiple Higgs boson production processes. Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered, as well as an analysis that measures off-shell Higgs boson production in the H → ZZ → 4$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e, μ) decay channel. The best fit inclusive signal yield is measured to be 1.014$^{+0.055}_{–0.053}$ times the standard model (SM) expectation, for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. Measurements in kinematic regions defined by the simplified template cross section framework are also provided, as well as interpretations in the coupling modifier and SM effective field theory frameworks. The coupling modifier interpretation is further used to place constraints on various two-Higgs-doublet models. The results show good compatibility with the SM predictions for the majority of the measured parameters.

Search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a charm quark and decaying to a W boson pair in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

This paper presents a search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a charm quark (cH) which allows to probe the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling strength modifier κ$_{c}$. Higgs boson decays to a pair of W bosons are considered, where one W boson decays to an electron and a neutrino, and the other W boson decays to a muon and a neutrino. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$, were collected between 2016 and 2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the ratio of the measured yield to the standard model expectation for cH production. The observed (expected) upper limit is 1065 (506), corresponding to an observed (expected) constraint of |κ$_{c}$| < 211 (95). When combined with the previous search for cH in the diphoton decay channel of the Higgs boson, the limits are interpreted as observed (expected) constraints at 95% CL on the value of κ$_{c}$, |κ$_{c}$| < 47 (51).[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Machine-learning techniques for model-independent searches in dijet final states

Anomaly detection methods used in a recent search for new phenomena by CMS at the CERN LHC are presented. The methods use machine learning to detect anomalous jets produced in the decay of new massive particles without depending on a specific theory model. The effectiveness of these approaches in enhancing sensitivity to various simulated signal samples is studied and compared using data collected in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In an example analysis, the capabilities of anomaly detection methods are further demonstrated by identifying large-radius jets consistent with Lorentz-boosted hadronically decaying top quarks in a model-agnostic framework.

Wasserstein normalized autoencoder for anomaly detection

A novel anomaly detection algorithm is presented. The Wasserstein normalized autoencoder (WNAE) is a normalized probabilistic model that minimizes the Wasserstein distance between the learned probability distribution—a Boltzmann distribution where the energy is the reconstruction error of the autoencoder (AE)—and the distribution of the training data. This algorithm has been developed and applied to the identification of semivisible jets—conical sprays of visible standard model (SM) particles and invisible dark matter states—with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Trained on jets of particles from simulated SM processes, the WNAE is shown to learn the probability distribution of the input data in a fully unsupervised fashion, such that it effectively identifies new physics jets as anomalies. The model exhibits stable, convergent training and recovers strong classification performance for a wide range of signals against the selected background process, for which a standard AE fails because of outlier reconstruction. In addition, the model improves upon standard normalized autoencoders while remaining fully agnostic to the signal. The WNAE directly tackles the problem of outlier reconstruction, a common failure mode of autoencoders in anomaly detection tasks.

Probing early parton emissions in heavy ion collisions using the Lund jet plane

In scattering experiments, high-virtuality partons, i.e., quarks and gluons, initiate a series of additional parton emissions to create collimated sprays of particles known as jets. This paper presents a measurement of the Lund jet plane (LJP) of high-energy jets produced in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions and compares the results to data for proton-proton (pp) collisions. The LJP is formed by iteratively declustering the constituents of a jet into consecutive emissions and recording the relative transverse momentum ($k_\mathrm{T}$) and angle of the resulting emission with respect to its emitter. The angular distributions of two different $k_\mathrm{T}$ slices of the LJP are investigated for jets with radius parameter of 0.4 and transverse momentum in the range 200$-$1000 GeV. The PbPb (pp) data were recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018 (2017) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$ (301 pb$^{-1}$) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measurement was designed to test whether the earliest jet emissions are produced before the formation of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in PbPb collisions. Within the experimental uncertainties, no significant difference is observed between the angular distribution of high-$k_\mathrm{T}$ emissions in \pp and PbPb collisions, which is consistent with these emissions occurring early in the jet evolution, before substantial interaction with the QGP.
