Liquid helium cooled Fabry-Perot spectrometers

An account is given of two successful efforts to construct cryogenic Fabry-Perot interferometers that are sufficiently compact and stable for such harsh conditions as those of balloon or space observations, as well as ground-based ones. Attention is given to the design features and performance of a Fabry-Perot interferometer incorporating an electromagnet actuator, the ISAS interferometer, a Fabry-Perot spectrometer with superconducting actuators, and the University of Arizona interferometer.

Programmable masks for optical information processing

Research in progress at NASA Ames Research Center on programmable masks is discussed in this paper. One type is a large area format liquid crystal mask intended for binary optical computation problems. To date, an on-off contrast ratio of 500:1 has been achieved at a switching rate of 1 Hz. With a 32 x 32 format, a ratio 10 to the 4th power:1 is desirable. The switching contrast is entirely dependent on the polarized quality; therefore, it is believed that 10 to the 4th power:1 in transmission is possible. Larger format masks are under development. An application to Hadamard transform polarized imagery at wavelengths of 1.0 to 2.0 micrometers, which is competitive with the best monolithic infrared detector arrays, is discussed.

Low-background performance of a monolithic InSb CCD array

A 20 element monolithic InSb charge coupled device (CCD) detector array was measured under low background conditions to assess its potential for orbital astronomical applications. At a temperature of 64 K, previous results for charge transfer efficiency (CTE) were reproduced, and a sensitivity of about 2 x 10 to the minus 15th power joules was measured. At 27 and 6 K, extended integration times were achieved, but CTE was substantially degraded. The noise was approximately 6000 charges, which was in excess of the level where statistical fluctuations from the illumination could be detected. A telescope demonstration was performed showing that the array sensitivity and difficulty of operation were not substantially different from laboratory levels. Ways in which the device could be improved for astronomical applications were discussed.

A real-time control system with video feedback for sounding rocket payloads

NASA/Ames has developed a command system to control the attitude of a rocket payload from a ground-based site. The SPARCS command system allows a ground-based operator to adjust the attitude of a solar experiment in real time. The attitude relative to the desired target features on the sun is monitored visually from the ground through a video link using an on-board TV camera. The system has demonstrated rapid acquisition of solar features, resulting in a more optimal usage of the data gathering time of a sounding rocket payload, and has located solar features which could not be precisely located from preflight data.
