Direct Power Control of Back to Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support Functions for Grid Forming Application

Possibility of using back-to-back modular multilevel converter system with a direct power control architecture has been investigated in this paper. The rectifier side is controlled to be in grid following mode whereas the inverter side is controlled in grid forming mode. Both the sides’ local controllers use Lyapunov energy function based architecture to accomplish the objective of active and reactive power control as well as maintaining a fixed user defined voltage over the dc bus on the rectifier side. Therefore, the proposed direct power control architecture has embedded dc bus control architecture to maintain fixed user defined value of the capacitors. Similar architecture is implemented on the inverter side to accomplish either voltage control during grid forming or power control during grid following. Advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE-1547-2018 is implemented and utilized to generate the reference values for either the rectifier or the inverter sides. The overall system is modeled based on MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case studies to verify the efficacy of the overall system has been presented.

Operation of Grid Forming Converters as Self Excited Induction Generators Under Non-Ideal Loading Conditions

Self-excited induction generators offer a robust solution for power production for standalone as well as grid-connected systems. In general, self-excited induction generators require excitation capacitors which make use of the machine magnetization characteristics for voltage build up process as well as operation at a specific frequency. In this paper, a self-excited induction machine is modeled with both the electrical and mechanical dynamics. This modeled virtual machine's dynamics are utilized for voltage build up process for a standalone photovoltaic converter connected to a local load for a microgrid application. The modeled machine's parameters are used from the name plate rating from the manufacturer. However, in a microgrid the accommodation of unbalanced and/or nonlinear harmonic rich load is a necessity, therefore, in this work the virtual self-excitation capacitors of the modeled machine are varied based on the machine characteristics. With the objective of ensuring harmonic free point of common coupling voltage, the modeled virtual self-excitation capacitors are varied to accomplish change in terminal frequency and the virtual load torque is varied to obtain voltage magnitude change. To verify the efficacy, the overall system is modeled in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and most important case studies are presented.

Operation and Control of a Back to Back Modular Multilevel Converter System for Grid Forming Application with Advanced Grid Support Functionalities

The main focus of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using modular multilevel converter based back-to-back system for grid forming applications. A decentralized hierarchical control architecture with a modified local controller based on nonlinear techniques for grid forming application have been investigated. Grid functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018 for grid forming converters have been utilized. The local controllers ensure distortion free balanced sinusoidal output voltage on the grid forming side with unbalanced or nonlinear loading condition. The grid following side ensures unity power factor currents under unbalanced grid voltage condition. The dc bus voltage control ensures oscillation free voltage under balanced conditions and control of the average voltage under unbalanced condition. Efficacy of the overall system is verified by modeling the system in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and the most important case studies are presented.

Modified Virtual Oscillator Based Operation of Grid Forming Converters with Single Voltage Sensor

Virtual oscillator based control architecture for grid forming converter with inner current control loop for additional objective accomplishments is proposed in this paper. In general, virtual oscillator is based on Lienard type of oscillator equation with a cubic nonlinearity. Virtual oscillator alone cannot accommodate unbalanced or harmonic mitigation while operating converters in grid forming mode. Therefore, to accomplish better tracking performance, incorporating the provision for nonlinear and/or unbalanced loads, an inner current control loop is utilized which is based upon Lyapunov energy function type control architecture due to its advantages. To reduce the overall cost of implementation and ensure proper phase difference in the generated voltages, the implemented virtual oscillator operates with only one voltage feedback from the point of common coupling as presented in this paper. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the overall system has been modeled in MATTLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and case studies showing the successful production of low harmonic load voltages under nonideal loading condition along with other important results are presented in this paper.
