LLNL IPD Tasks: ICSBEP and Pulsed Spheres Benchmark [Slides]

This lecture presented benchmark of the blank and polyethylene spheres at SINBAD in April 2023. In responding to comments about the building, we uncovered a large amount of additional detailed information about the building and experimental set up. We incorporated this new information into an even higher fidelity model and are working on uncertainty analysis at a low level. Scheduled to present at SINBAD meeting in April 2024.

Impact of Light Water Covariance on Integral Benchmarks [Slides]

New light water covariance has been generated. Impact of covariance quantified using two metrics on systems deemed sensitive to thermal scattering of light water. Analysis shows systems might not be sensitive enough to show significant differences. What differences were shown are most notable when comparing against the ENDF/B-VIII.0 covariance.

Advancements in Validation of TSLs through Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Transmission Measurements [Slides]

This presentation finds that INS measurements are not as variable based on sample composition, because phonon spectra is a properly of the bulk material. Additionally, INS and transmission measurements are and should be the most significant part of TSL validation, as they are the fundamental quantities used by Monte Carlo neutronics codes. Relaying solely on theoretical atomistic calculations for TSL evaluation is not enough, they are highly dependent on inter-atomic potentials (which are not the most accurate depending on the quantity trying to be reproduced) and evaluators knowledge and understanding of the material being studied. When dealing with Crit. benchmarks - While extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. Finally, INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

Comparative Analysis of Standard and Advanced USL Methodologies [Slides]

This presentation is on the comparative analysis of standard and advanced USL methodologies. Each method has a different way to address/account for experimental biases and uncertainties. This study showed why bias and uncertainty predictions by these popular methods differ significantly in some cases. In order to establish confidence to our validation efforts, especially with new reactor concepts, in designing new critical experiments and claiming experimental coverage for our existing applications, we need to understand capabilities of our methods further.

ORNL S/U Capabilities for Critical Experiment Design [Slides]

This presentation is on the Oak Ridge National Labatory (ORNL) S/U capabilities for critical experiment design. It covers a brief intro to TSUNAMI analysis for NCS validation. Additionally, it shows similarity indices and historical use of TSUNAMI for critical experiment design. It concludes with recent designs: IER-441, IER-304, and IER-554 (on-going).

On Integral Benchmarks for Resolving TSL Conflicts for ENDF/B-VIII.1 Release [Slides]

This presentation touches on polystyrene ORNL evaluation in TSL review process for ENDF/B-VIII.1. the presentation found excellent agreement with INS and transmission measurements. Additionally, PS and PE evaluations with different phonon spectra, similar total xs., calculate keff similarly. This presentation found for critical benchmarks. While extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. In conclusion this presentation found INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

Covariance Testing Progress for ENDF/B-VIII.1β1 at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation touched on how data-induced uncertainty significantly increased for thermal 235 U-fueled systems. And how 239 Pu covariance changes are worrying. Additionally discussed is how 103 Rh is the only significant important fission product change. The Impact of ENDF/B-VIII.1β1 on burnup credit similarity assessments is similar to ENDF/B-VII.1 data.

Validation Progress and Plans for ENDF/B-VIII.1β1 at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation opens with a ORNL definition of ENDF/B-VIII.1β1. Following with keff results for CE calculations with VALID. Additionally provided are Preliminary Root Cause Analysis (RCA) results. This presentation then concludes with future plans for additional validation.
