Comprehensive anisotropic linear optical properties of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and NbAs

We report that TaAs and NbAs are two of the earliest identified Weyl semimetals that possess many intriguing optical properties, such as chirality-dependent optical excitations and giant second harmonic generation (SHG). Linear and nonlinear optics have been employed as tools to probe the Weyl physics in these crystals. Here, we extend these studies to address two important aspects: determining the complete anisotropic dielectric response and exploring if and how they can reveal essential Weyl physics. We determine the complete anisotropic dielectric functions of TaAs and NbAs by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory (DFT). Parameterized Lorentz oscillators are reported from 1.2 - 6 eV (experiment) and 0 - 6 eV (DFT), and good agreement is shown between them. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties have been previously reported to reveal Weyl physics. We suggest that strong optical resonances from trivial bands are the likely origin of the large optical SHG previously reported at these energies. Furthermore, by comparing the contribution of a small k -space centered around the Weyl cones with the total linear dielectric function, we find that these contributions are highly anisotropic and are < 25% of the total dielectric function below 0.5 eV; abov1 eV, these contributions are negligible. Thus, the study of Weyl physics using optical techniques requires very low energies, and even there, a careful assessment is required in distinguishing the much smaller contributions of the Weyl bands from the dominant contributions of the trivial bands and Drude response to the total dielectric function.

Direct evidence of ferromagnetism in MnSb 2 Te 4

We report the magnetic imaging of ferromagnetic domains in the van der Waals single crystal MnSb 2 Te 4 from two different sources using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy. The magnetic field dependence of the domains reveals very weak pinning of domain walls in MnSb 2 Te 4 , resulting in a negligibly small magnetic hysteresis loop. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the domain contrast reveals a mean field like behavior, in good agreement with that of bulk magnetization measurements.

Mid-wave to near-IR optoelectronic properties and epsilon-near-zero behavior in indium-doped cadmium oxide

Indium-doped cadmium oxide (In:CdO) thin films exhibit tunable epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modal frequencies across a wide spectral range, bridging the mid-wave and near-infrared (IR). In:CdO thin films are prepared by reactive cosputtering from metallic Cd and In targets using high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) and radio frequency sputtering, respectively. Using this approach, CdO thin films with carrier concentrations ranging from 2.3 × 10 19 to 4.0 × 10 20 cm –3 and mobilities ranging from 300 to 400 cm 2 /Vs are readily achieved. UV-VIS absorption spectra are used to measure optical bandgap, revealing a Burstein-Moss shift of 0.58 eV across the doping range investigated. In this work, optical measurements demonstrate the tunability of near-perfect plasmonic ENZ absorption across the mid-wave and into the near-IR spectral ranges by controlling the carrier concentration through doping, while tuning the film thickness for impedance matching. In comparison to other dopants that can be introduced to HiPIMS-deposited CdO, In offers the largest range of carrier concentrations while maintaining high mobility, thus allowing for the widest accessibility of the IR spectrum of a single plasmonic material grown by sputtering.

Distinct magneto-Raman signatures of spin-flip phase transitions in CrI 3

The discovery of 2-dimensional (2D) materials, such as CrI 3 , that retain magnetic ordering at monolayer thickness has resulted in a surge of both pure and applied research in 2D magnetism. Here, we report a magneto-Raman spectroscopy study on multilayered CrI 3 , focusing on two additional features in the spectra that appear below the magnetic ordering temperature and were previously assigned to high frequency magnons. Instead, we conclude these modes are actually zone-folded phonons. We observe a striking evolution of the Raman spectra with increasing magnetic field applied perpendicular to the atomic layers in which clear, sudden changes in intensities of the modes are attributed to the interlayer ordering changing from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic at a critical magnetic field. Our work highlights the sensitivity of the Raman modes to weak interlayer spin ordering in CrI 3 .

Néel-type skyrmion in WTe 2 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 van der Waals heterostructure

The promise of high-density and low-energy-consumption devices motivates the search for layered structures that stabilize chiral spin textures such as topologically protected skyrmions. At the same time, recently discovered long-range intrinsic magnetic orders in the two-dimensional van der Waals materials provide a new platform for the discovery of novel physics and effects. Here we demonstrate the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and Néel-type skyrmions are induced at the WTe 2 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 interface. Transport measurements show the topological Hall effect in this heterostructure for temperatures below 100 K. Furthermore, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy is used to directly image Néel-type skyrmion lattice and the stripe-like magnetic domain structures as well. The interfacial coupling induced Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction is estimated to have a large energy of 1.0 mJ m –2 . This work paves a path towards the skyrmionic devices based on van der Waals layered heterostructures.

Giant room temperature anomalous Hall effect and tunable topology in a ferromagnetic topological semimetal Co 2 MnAl

Weyl semimetals exhibit unusual surface states and anomalous transport phenomena. It is hard to manipulate the band structure topology of specific Weyl materials. Topological transport phenomena usually appear at very low temperatures, which sets challenges for applications. In this work, we demonstrate the band topology modification via a weak magnetic field in a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal candidate, Co 2 MnAl, at room temperature. We observe a tunable, giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) induced by the transition involving Weyl points and nodal rings. The AHE conductivity is as large as that of a 3D quantum AHE, with the Hall angle (Θ H ) reaching a record value (tan Θ H = 0.21) at the room temperature among magnetic conductors. Furthermore, we propose a material recipe to generate large AHE by gaping nodal rings without requiring Weyl points. Our work reveals an intrinsically magnetic platform to explore the interplay between magnetic dynamics and topological physics for developing spintronic devices.

High yield production of ultrathin fibroid semiconducting nanowire of Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8

Immediately after the demonstration of the high-quality electronic properties in various two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals fabricated with mechanical exfoliation, many methods have been reported to explore and control large scale fabrications. Comparing with recent advancements in fabricating 2D atomic layered crystals, large scale production of one dimensional (1D) nanowires with thickness approaching molecular or atomic level still remains stagnant. Here, we demonstrate the high yield production of a 1D vdW material, semiconducting Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8 nanowires, by means of liquid-phase exfoliation. The thinnest nanowire we have readily achieved is around 1 nm, corresponding to a bundle of one or two molecular ribbons. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and transport measurements reveal the as-fabricated Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8 nanowires exhibit unexpected high crystallinity and chemical stability. Our low-frequency Raman spectroscopy reveals clear evidence of the existing of weak inter-ribbon bindings. The fabricated nanowire transistors exhibit high switching performance and promising applications for photodetectors.

Emergence of a competing stripe phase near the Mott transition in Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates

We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and the paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically competing phases. Our work provides a model approach to correlate the macroscopic properties and mesoscopic phase separation in complex oxide materials.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

Evidence from transport measurements for YRh 6 Ge 4 being a triply degenerate nodal semimetal

We have investigated magnetotransport properties of YRh 6 Ge 4 , which was recently predicted to be a triply degenerate nodal semimetal. We find it exhibits remarkable signatures of a chiral anomaly, manifested by large negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the quadratic field dependence of magnetoconductance and the planar Hall effect. Furthermore, we have also observed Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistivity measurements on this material. The analyses of the SdH data reveal two pointlike Fermi surfaces and these pockets are found to host nearly massless fermions. The small size of these Fermi pockets is in a good agreement with the theoretical prediction that the triply degenerate point in YRh 6 Ge 4 is much closer to the Fermi level than previously demonstrated triply degenerate nodal semimetals such as MoP and WC. These results suggest YRh 6 Ge 4 may serve as a model system to probe exotic properties of three-component fermions and understand their underlying physics.
