Nova Analysis: Holistically Valuing the Contributions of Residential Efficiency, Solar and Storage

Policies to address climate change and grid modernization, in combination with cost reductions and technological advancements in energy efficiency (EE) and distributed energy resources (DER), are driving rapid deployment of building electrification and energy efficiency retrofits, rooftop solar photovoltaics (PV), smart thermostats, smart water heaters, and battery energy storage. In residential buildings, there are multiple stakeholders (occupant, utility, aggregator, society at large) that are each focused on different value streams. This project uses a suite of metrics intended to all of these value streams to try to holistically analyze the benefits that come from solar, storage, and energy efficiency. To demonstrate the value of these metrics, a semi annual study was performed simulating hundreds of homes across the U.S. under several different upgrade scenarios.

Savings in Action: Lessons Learned from a Vermont Community with Solar Plus Storage

As the U.S. works to meet emissions reduction goals and modernize power sector operations, residential buildings - which account for 21% of the total U.S. electricity consumption - will play a key role. Residential buildings with energy efficiency and distributed energy resources are able to provide value to multiple stakeholders, including the occupant, utility, and society at large. To account for this, multiple metrics that capture the value each stakeholder gets are required. This report contains analysis of a unique solar plus storage community in Vermont, including the calculation of multiple metrics and a unique "score card" that succinctly captures all of the value in a single figure.

REopt for Resilient Buildings: Leveraging Energy Efficiency and Distributed Energy Resources for Resilience Solutions

Community resilience hubs are locally identified and community-serving facilities that provide residents year-round access to support resources. During extreme weather, they can reduce the burden on emergency response teams by supplying power before, during, and after grid outages through onsite energy systems. This presentation analyzes how NREL's REopt tool can leverage energy efficiency, distributed generation, and storage resources to ensure critical community facilities are online when they are needed most. We showcase the tool's capabilities and application through a case study that focuses on achieving resilience for critical facilities in Manatee County.
