Conformal gravity and the flatness problem

The radiation and matter-dominated cosmologies associated with fourth-order conformal Weyl gravity, a theory which is currently being explored as a candidate alternative to the standard second-order Einstein theory, are presented. The theory naturally yields an open though nonetheless recollapsing universe which can even oscillate indefinitely, which appears to possess no flatness problem, which has a cosmology which could potentially be created out of nothing, which is singularity free, and which does not appear to require any cosmological dark matter.

Probing the Higgs vacuum with general relativity

It is shown that the structure of the Higgs vacuum can be revealed in gravitational experiments which probe the Schwarzschild geometry to only one order in MG/r beyond that needed for the classical tests of general relativity. The possibility that deviations from the conventional geometry are at least theoretically conceivable is explored. The deviations obtained provide a diagnostic test for searching for the existence of macroscopic scalar fields and open up the possiblity for further exploring the Higgs mechanism.

Dark matter or new physics?

Several proposals for a new physics to explain the deviation of galactic rotation curves from their expected Keplerian falloff with distance are discussed. Emphasis is given to a locally scale-invariant theory of gravity posed by the authors. The observational consequences of this theory are pointed out.

Current status of conformal Weyl gravity

The status of fourth-order conformal Weyl gravity theory as an alternative theory of gravity to standard second-order Einstein theory is briefly reviewed. The questions remaining open are addressed.

Exact vacuum solution to conformal Weyl gravity and galactic rotation curves

The complete, exact exterior solution for a static, spherically symmetric source in locally conformal invariant Weyl gravity is presented. The solution includes the familiar exterior Schwarzschild solution as a special case and contains an extra gravitational potential term which grows linearly with distance. The obtained solution provides a potential explanation for observed galactic rotation curves without the need for dark matter. The solution also has some interesting implications for cosmology.
