Online Detection of Power Grid Anomalies via Federated Learning

Data from sensors is critical for advanced applica- tions that support efficient, reliable, and resilient electric grid operations. Historically, data from phasor measurement units (PMU) has been utilized to develop a wide variety of wide area control and protection applications suitable for power grid control centers. However, until now, most of these could not be deployed for automated operations due to a set of data corruption challenges and uncertainty in the incoming data pipeline. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting different variety of anomalies that are evident in different high- speed power grid measurements. The paper discusses a workflow for handling problems with data acquisition and highlights some of the key findings suitable for anomaly detection in a centralized and distributed environment. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated with results utilizing realistic PMU datasets

High-Fidelity Dataset Generation for Sensor Anomalies in Power Grids using Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed

Sensor anomalies in power grids can have significant impacts on the operation of the grid due to the increased reliance of the grid operation on data-driven applications. However, there is a lack of datasets that accurately capture these anomalies as many of the anomalies go undetected using the current bad data detectors. High-fidelity labeled datasets are essential for developing robust applications that can detect and mitigate the impacts of anomalies. In this paper, we propose a hardware-in-the-loop testbed model that can emulate the grid behavior with high-fidelity. This testbed is used to inject anomalies at various levels in the grid architecture and generate labeled datasets. These high-fidelity datasets can be used for development and validation of data-driven applications for detection and mitigation of anomalies in grids and other cyber-physical systems.

EverGREEN 2045: An Energy mix to Decarbonize Washington State

The Clean Energy Transformation Act transitions Washington State to 100% clean energy by 2045. As the future resource mix will likely include intermittent renewables, hydropower, and new, carbon-free, flexible technologies including advanced nuclear reactors and enhanced geothermal systems, we assess the cost and feasibility of the future resource mix with proprietary cost data from our industry partners for new technologies. For plausible future resource mix scenarios, we find that revenues are sufficient to cover variable operations and maintenance costs for most technologies, but capacity payments or power purchase agreements will be necessary for new, flexible resources to participate in the future resource mix.

Sensor Data Analytics and Data Quality Assessment Software

The proposed framework derives a set of quality metrics to provide critical insights into and tracking of grid operations, sensor performance, sensor longevity, and event statistics. Power grid engineers can utilize this information to identify problems with existing sensor locations and problematic power grid assets including generators, transmission lines, load centers, and substations. This information can also be used to identify unexpected/abnormal behavior of power grid components, improve power grid observability, and operational monitoring, and thus enhance real-time decision-making support system. Power grid planners can utilize this information to augment existing sensing architecture with new sensors and improve the observability of the network.
