Luminosity-velocity diagrams for Virgo Cluster spirals. I - Inner rotation curves

Optical rotation curves are presented for the innermost portions of nine spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. The emission-line (H-alpha and forbidden N II) velocity data are to be used in combination with new CCD photometry to construct luminosity-velocity diagrams, in a continuing investigation of an apparent initial linear branch and its potential as a distance indicator. Compared to recent H I data, the present optical rotation curves generally show systematically steeper inner gradients. This effect is ascribed to the poorer resolution of the H I data and/or to holes in the gas distribution.

Cepheids in Magellanic Cloud star clusters - Fundamental and overtone pulsators in NGC 2157

CCD survey data are employed to examine Cepheids in young Magellanic Cloud star clusters. The properties of three Cepheids observed in NGC 2157 are described. It is detected that the two short-period (3 days) Cepheids have photometric properties that correspond to overtone pulsators and the long-period (7.7 days) Cepheid pulses in the fundamental mode. The pulsational masses for the three Cepheids are calculated to be about 5 solar masses. This mass value does not correlate with the average pulsational mass for Cepheids of 3.0 + or - 0.4 solar masses. The potential cause of this deviation in evolutionary/pulsational mass is investigated.

Stellar content of nearby galaxies. III - The local group spiral galaxy M33

BVRI CCD photometry is presented for stars brighter than V = 21 mag in four fields in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. V vs (B - V) and I vs (V - I) color-magnitude diagrams clearly show both a young stellar population (as indicated by the blue main sequence and red supergiant plumes) as well as an intermediate-age population of asymptotic giant branch stars. Deep photometry in the outer field (where crowding is less severe) reveals a population consistent in color and magnitude with the tip of the first red giant branch. The M33 distance modulus, 24.6 + or - 0.3 mag, derived from this Population II component is consistent with a recent redetermination of the distance modulus found from Population I Cepheid variables. Finally, some evidence is presented for a radial gradient in the average internal reddening for the fields in M33 reported here.

Photographic, near-infrared, and CCD photometry of the distant globular cluster AM-1

New photographic, CCD, and near-infrared photometry of stars in the distant globular cluster AM-1 are presented. Based on the photographic and CCD photometry down to the horizontal branch, a distance modulus (m-M)v = 20.4 mag is derived, with E(B-V) = 0.0 mag, corresponding to a distance of 120 kpc from the sun. Using the (V-K) colors of two giants in AM-1, a metallicity of Fe/H = -2.0 + or - 0.2 is deduced, in good agreement with earlier determinations. Using complete photometry and star counts, a core radius of 10 arcsec (6 pc) and a tidal radius of 100 arcsec (58 pc) are derived. Despite the low intrinsic luminosity (Mv = -5.0 mag) and the large galactocentric distance of this globular cluster, the apparent magnitude distribution of the giant branch stars of AM-1 is not found to be unusual.
