X-Ray Moire Techniques For Measuring Strain

X-ray moire method provides for measurement of strains throughout relatively large regions and in locations invisible or inaccessible to measurement by other techniques. For example, used to measure strains between layers of material in rubber tires. Method exploits body of knowledge already developed for optical moire measurement of strains. Offers advantages over optical methods of measuring strains within depths of objects, in that x-ray imaging not restricted to optically transparent materials. Also offers advantages over strain-gauge method that gauge wires not needed and measurements not limited to discrete gauge points.

Device For Ultrasonic Scanning Of Curved Object

Bristles couple ultrasound into and out of object. Ultrasonic brush is device proposed to overcome major difficulties encountered in ultrasonic scanning of interior of object having curved surface. Insonifies object with uniform-phase wavefronts propagating into interior from relatively large area on surface. As result, ultrasonic image of subsurface flaws throughout interior generated much faster and more easily.

Radiographic Moire

A method for the x-ray inspection of materials making use of the Moire effect is described. The Moire effect results when two patterns are superimposed; a third pattern is produced. Any change in either of the first two patterns creates a change in the third. Moire inspection is common with visible light. This invention allows the technique to be extended to locations inaccessible to visual inspection. A first pattern of high radio contrast material is attached to or included in the sample. X-rays are projected through the sample. A second pattern is imposed at the observation point, either before or after the formation of the x-ray image. The two patterns interact to create a third, Moire, pattern. As the material is stressed the Moire pattern changes, the degree of change indicating the degree of stress.

X-Ray And Acoustic Measurements Yield Stiffnesses

Analytical technique combines ultrasonic scanning measurements of local velocity of sound in specimen of material with x-ray computed tomographic measurements of local mass density to compute local stiffness of material. Stiffnesses at various locations in specimen then used in finite-element mathematical model of elastic behavior of specimen to compute local stresses, local strains, and overall deformations. Technique enhances value of quantitative nondestructive x-ray and ultrasonic measurements. Especially useful in characterization of carbon/carbon composites and other advanced materials not homogeneous and for which customary simplifying assumption of constant density and/or constant stiffness not valid.
