Scalable, Ultrathin, and High-Temperature-Resistant Solid Polymer Electrolytes for Energy-Dense Lithium Metal Batteries

We report all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) demonstrate great promise, offering high energy density, good thermal stability, and safe operation compared with traditional Li-ion batteries. Among various solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) offer an attractive choice due to their thinness, low density, and good manufacturability. However, ultrathin SPEs that work with practical current densities or at high temperatures remain challenging, limiting applicable conditions of SPE-based batteries. Here, the authors report a novel scalable, ultrathin, and high-temperature-resistant SPE for ASSBs. This design includes an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) matrix and polyethylene oxide (PEO)/Li salt ionic conductor, which offers a stable LiF and Li 3 N containing SSE/Li interface. The unique interface—as well as the good mechanical strength—inhibits lithium dendrites and prevents short circuiting. As a result, symmetrical Li-Li cells deliver more than 300 h cyclability at 0.5 mA cm -2 . ASSBs fabricated with only 5 µm-thickness PAN-PEO/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide reach 300 cycles at 0.3 C rate at 60 °C. The excellent thermal stability of PAN also results in safer SPEs at high temperatures. The design extends battery operation up to temperatures of 120 and 150 °C, where it achieves 500 cycles at C/2 rate and 100 cycles at 2C rate, respectively.

Coloured low-emissivity films for building envelopes for year-round energy savings

We report that buildings are responsible for over 40% of total US energy use, of which about 40% is directly related to the operation of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Saving energy to heat and cool buildings would contribute substantially to sustainability. Here we propose a category of coloured low-emissivity films for building walls that constitute the main component of the building thermal envelope. We demonstrate high reflectance (~90%) in infrared wavelength range and selective reflectance in the visible light wavelength range for desired colours. These films can help minimize radiative heat exchange between the indoor and outdoor environments, thus saving energy for all-year cooling and heating while satisfying the required aesthetical effect. Simulations show that these films can help reduce heat gain and loss by up to 257.6 MJ per installation wall area annually. In the case of a typical midrise apartment building, the HVAC system can save up to 124.46 GJ (equal to 9.87% of the building’s HVAC energy consumption). By rough estimation, a global CO 2 emission reduction of 1.14 billion metric tons annually could be achieved. Our work provides insights for innovative energy-saving building envelope materials that can help achieve global carbon neutrality and sustainability.

A Morphologically Stable Li/Electrolyte Interface for All-Solid-State Batteries Enabled by 3D-Micropatterned Garnet

Morphological degradation at the Li/solid-state electrolyte (SSE) interface is a prevalent issue causing performance fading of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). To maintain the interfacial integrity, most ASSBs are operated under low current density with considerable stack pressure, which significantly limits their widespread usage. In this work, a novel 3D-micropatterned SSE (3D-SSE) that can stabilize the morphology of the Li/SSE interface even under relatively high current density and limited stack pressure is reported. Under the pressure of 1.0 MPa, the Li symmetric cell using a garnet-type 3D-SSE fabricated by laser machining shows a high critical current density of 0.7 mA cm –2 and stable cycling over 500 h under 0.5 mA cm –2 . This excellent performance is attributed to the reduced local current density and amplified mechanical stress at the Li/3D-SSE interface. These two effects can benefit the flux balance between Li stripping and creep at the interface, thereby pre-venting interfacial degradation such as void formation and dendrite growth.
