Outstanding Platinum Group Metal-free Bifunctional Catalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries

Developing highly active and durable catalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZAB) is critical for energy conversion and storage. Herein, we prepared Fe-N-C catalysts at a kilogram scale by the commercial VariPore™ method and the effect of synthesis conditions on the catalyst performance at ZAB air electrode was investigated. The results show the PA-450-HT exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and it is the most suitable catalyst for primary ZAB with the galvanostatic polarization discharge peak power density of 149 mW cm -2 , outperforming commercial Pt-Ru/C catalysts. Additionally, the NCB-600-HT catalyst displays the half-wave potential of 0.87 V vs. RHE for ORR and ΔE value of 0.81 V (indicating outstanding ORR and OER reversibility) and exhibits excellent charge-discharge cycling durability similar to NCB-550-LT around 160 h for the secondary ZAB. This work reports outstanding bifunctional Fe-N-C catalysts for rechargeable ZAB at mass production for the first time.

Trace level of atomic copper in N-doped graphene quantum dots switching the selectivity from C 1 to C 2 products in CO electroreduction

To unravel the relationship between trace Cu on the metal-free catalysts toward CO/CO 2 reduction reaction (CO/CO 2 RR), we investigated the effect of trace Cu loading in N-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) on CO/CO 2 RR. A general trend is that increasing the Cu loading in NGQDs switches the selectivity from C 1 (CH 4 ) to C 2 products in CORR. When 2.5 μg/cm 2 Cu with the atomic size is loaded on NGQDs, the selectivity shifts from 62% Faradaic efficiency (FE) of CH 4 to 52% FE of C 2 products in CORR. Further increasing the atomic Cu loading to 3.8 μg/cm 2 promotes the FE of C 2 products to 78%. CO 2 RR requires one order of magnitude higher Cu loading than CORR to switch the selectivity from C 1 to C 2 products due to the low partial pressure of CO. Finally, this study clarifies the distinct impact of trace (ppm level) Cu on the activity/selectivity between CORR and CO 2 RR.

Performance investigation of alkaline direct methanol fuel cell with commercial PGM-free cathodic materials

Because little progress has been made in investigating the performance of alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (ADMFCs) with commercial materials (including platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts, anion exchange ionomers (AEIs), and anion exchange membranes (AEMs)), the objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of ADMFCs with all commercial materials, in order to establish a reference against which the performance of newly developed materials can be compared. Fe-N-C catalysts, Fumasep (FAA-3-50) based AEMs, and FAA3 based AEIs are here employed, and the parameters such as of operating temperature and methanol concentration are investigated and optimized. Electrochemical measurements show a performance increase with the temperature from 40 to 60 °C, and with the methanol concentration (from 1 to 5 M); followed by insignificant decrease with the further increase to 10 M. The best performance is achieved with 5 M methanol at 60 °C, and the remarkable powder density of 48.2 mW cm -2 was demonstrated under these conditions. This work provides insight into the large-scale application of ADMFC with commercial PGM-free materials.

In Situ Reconstructed Mo–doped Amorphous FeOOH Boosts the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Developing a fast and highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst to change energy kinetics technology is essential for making clean energy. Herein, we prepare three-dimensional (3D) hollow Mo-doped amorphous FeOOH (Mo-FeOOH) based on the precatalyst MoS 2 /FeC 2 O 4 via in situ reconstruction strategy. Mo-FeOOH exhibits promising OER performance. Specifically, it has an overpotential of 285 mV and a durability of 15 h at 10 mA cm –2 . Characterizations indicate that Mo was included inside the FeOOH lattice, and it not only modifies the electronic energy levels of FeOOH but also effectively raises the inherent activity of FeOOH for OER. Additionally, in situ Raman analysis indicates that FeC 2 O 4 gradually transforms into the FeOOH active site throughout the OER process. Finally, this study provides ideas for designing in situ reconstruction strategies to prepare heteroatom doping catalysts for high electrochemical activity.

Retrofitting of carbon-supported bimetallic Ni-based catalysts by phosphorization for hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media

Commercial bimetallic Ni–Mo and Ni–Re electrocatalysts supported on advanced conductive carbon are high-performing materials for H 2 evolution reaction in alkaline medium, but they cannot be applied in acidic medium due to the rapid dissolution of metals. Here, in this work, we solve this issue by introducing a convenient phosphorization protocol to convert these commercial metallic electrocatalysts into the respective phosphides, rendering them stable under acidic conditions, and thus providing a pathway to electrocatalysts for water reduction in acidic electrolyte. The novel materials demonstrate high performance, as reflected by the measured low overpotentials, shallow Tafel slopes, fast kinetics, as well as excellent stability and durability. This work opens the possibility to expand the applicability of commercial supported metallic catalysts and electrocatalysts through retrofitting via phosphorization.

Design of Graded Cathode Catalyst Layers with Various Ionomers for Fuel Cell Application

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) powered by green hydrogen (H2) have become a promising alternative to conventional hydrocarbon-fueled power generators. Despite technological advancements, further improvements in efficiency, durability, and low-cost production are required for the widespread adoption of PEMFCs. Though numerous approaches to improve PEMFC electrodes have been reported, most strategies utilize a single material set (e.g., one combination of catalyst and ionomer) to improve performance. Alternatively, anisotropic (graded) electrode structures with locally tunable properties may yield superior electrode performance due to improved ionic and gas phase transport. In this work, graded cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) incorporating different ionomers (Nafion D2020, Aquivion D79-25BS, and HOPI) were designed and prepared. Performance screening shows that some of these graded electrode structures have comparable performance to optimized single-ionomer electrode structures (D2020) suggesting some synergistic benefit. Additionally, we show that electrodes with lower equivalent weight (EW) D79 ionomer near the membrane and D2020 ionomer near the gas diffusion media outperformed electrodes with the inverted configuration. Finally, EIS analysis shows some graded ionomer structures (e.g. D79/D2020) have better than expected H+ conductivity, generally leading to better electrode performance. However, further optimization of ionomer content and catalyst ink formulations is needed to improve overall PEMFC performance.

The Conventional Gas Diffusion Electrode May Not Be Resistant to Flooding during CO 2 /CO Reduction

The electrochemical CO 2 or CO reduction to chemicals and fuels using renewable energy is a promising way to reduce anthropogenic carbon emissions. The gas diffusion electrode (GDE) design enables low-carbon manufacturing of target products at a current density (e.g., 500 mA cm –2 ) relevant to industrial requirements. However, the long-term stability of the GDE is restricted by poor water management and flooding, resulting in a significant hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) within almost an hour. The optimization of water management in the GDE demands a thorough understanding of the role of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the catalyst layer (CL) distinctively. In this work, the hydrophobicity of the GDL and CL is independently adjusted to investigate their influence on gas transport efficiency and water management. The gas transport efficiency is more enhanced with the increase in hydrophobicity of the GDL than the CL. Direct visualization of water distribution by optical microscope and micro-computed tomography demonstrates that the water flow pattern transfers from the stable displacement to capillary fingering as GDL hydrophobicity increases. Unfortunately, only increasing the hydrophobicity is not sufficient to prevent flooding. A revolutionary change in the design of the GDE structure is essential to maintain the long-term stability of CO 2 /CO reduction.
