Atomic Layer Deposition Overcoating Improves Catalyst Selectivity and Longevity in Propane Dehydrogenation

Propylene, a precursor for commodity chemicals and plastics, is produced by propane dehydrogenation (PDH). An increase in PDH yield via added catalyst activity, lifetime, or selectivity represents significant energy and economic savings. Using Pt dispersed on Al2O3 extrudate supports as a commercially relevant model system, we demonstrate that atomic layer deposition (ALD) metal oxide overcoats, used to tailor metal-active sites, can increase PDH yield and selectivity. We investigate the interplay of Pt loading, ALD overcoat thickness, and Al 2 O 3 support surface area on PDH activity, selectivity, and catalyst stability to show that applying a 6-8 A thick layer of Al 2 O 3 on low-surface area Al 2 O 3 supports of similar to 90 m 2 /g surface area yields the optimal combination of stability and activity, while increasing propylene selectivity from 91 to 96%. Increased stability upon steaming deactivation occurs because the Al 2 O 3 overcoat prevents the Pt nanoparticles from sintering. We speculate that the ALD overcoat selectively binds to the undercoordinated sites on the Pt nanoparticles, while leaving the more selective terrace sites available for dehydrogenation.

Gold Catalysts Synthesized Using a Modified Incipient Wetness Impregnation Method for Propylene Epoxidation

Propylene epoxidation in the presence of oxygen and hydrogen were measured for a series of Au/TS-1 catalysts prepared by a modified incipient wetness impregnation (mIWI) method. This method enables precise control of the Au : Ti ratio in the Au/TS-1 catalysts. The optimized Au/TS-1 catalyst exhibited 12 % propylene conversion, 87 % PO selectivity, and 25 % hydrogen efficiency. The particle size of gold nanoparticles prepared by the modified IWI was between 2 and 3 nm, as demonstrated by XRD patterns, STEM images, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Au L(3)edge. XPS spectra showed that the surface species on the catalysts were similar. UV-Vis spectra suggested that in the modified IWI method, the chlorine ligands in Au(Cl)(4)(-)were replaced by hydroxyl groups, which contributes to form small gold nanoparticles. Kinetic studies showed that the active sites of Au(mIWI)/TS-1 are similar to the Au(DP)/TS-1 prepared by deposition precipitation.

Impacts of Wildfire Aerosols on Global Energy Budget and Climate: The Role of Climate Feedbacks

Aerosols emitted from wildfires could significantly affect global climate through perturbing global radiation balance. In this study, the Community Earth System Model with prescribed daily fire aerosol emissions is used to investigate fire aerosols’ impacts on global climate with emphasis on the role of climate feedbacks. The total global fire aerosol radiative effect (RE) is estimated to be -0.78 ± 0.29 W m -2 , which is mostly from shortwave RE due to aerosol–cloud interactions (REaci; -0.70 ± 0.20 W m -2 ). The associated global annual-mean surface air temperature (SAT) change ΔT is -0.64 ± 0.16 K with the largest reduction in the Arctic regions where the shortwave REaci is strong. Associated with the cooling, the Arctic sea ice is increased, which acts to reamplify the Arctic cooling through a positive ice-albedo feedback. The fast response (irrelevant to ΔT) tends to decrease surface latent heat flux into atmosphere in the tropics to balance strong atmospheric fire black carbon absorption, which reduces the precipitation in the tropical land regions (southern Africa and South America). The climate feedback processes (associated with ΔT) lead to a significant surface latent heat flux reduction over global ocean areas, which could explain most (~80%) of the global precipitation reduction. The precipitation significantly decreases in deep tropical regions (5°N) but increases in the Southern Hemisphere tropical ocean, which is associated with the southward shift of the intertropical convergence zone and the weakening of Southern Hemisphere Hadley cell. Such changes could partly compensate the interhemispheric temperature asymmetry induced by boreal forest fire aerosol indirect effects, through intensifying the cross-equator atmospheric heat transport.

Engineering Active Fe Sites on Nickel–Iron Layered Double Hydroxide through Component Segregation for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst under alkaline conditions. Much research has been performed to understand the structure-activity relationship of NiFe LDH under OER conditions. However, the specific role of the Fe species remains unclear and under debate. Herein, based on DFT calculations, it was discovered that the edge Fe sites show higher activity towards OER than either the edge Ni sites or lattice sites. Therefore, a facile acid-etching method was proposed to controllably induce the formation of edge Fe sites in NiFe LDH, and the obtained sample exhibited higher OER activity. X-ray absorption near edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses further revealed that the interaction of the edge Fe species with Ni is believed to contribute to the enhancement of the OER performance. This work provides a new understanding of the structure-activity relationship in NiFe LDH and offers a facile method for the design of efficient electrocatalysts in an alkaline environment.
