On amplitudes and field redefinitions

We derive an off-shell recursion relation for correlators that holds at all loop orders. This allows us to prove how generalized amplitudes transform under generic field redefinitions, starting from an assumed behavior of the one-particle-irreducible effective action. The form of the recursion relation resembles the operation of raising the rank of a tensor by acting with a covariant derivative. This inspires a geometric interpretation, whose features and flaws we investigate.

Hilbert series for covariants and their applications to minimal flavor violation

We elaborate how to apply the Hilbert series method to enumerating group covariants, which transform under any given representation, including but going beyond group invariants. Mathematically, group covariants form a module over the ring of the invariants. The number of independent covariants is given by the rank of the module, which can be computed by taking a ratio of two Hilbert series. In many cases, the rank equals the dimension of the group covariant representation. When this happens, we say that there is a rank saturation. We apply this technology to revisit the hypothesis of Minimal Flavor Violation in constructing Effective Field Theories beyond the Standard Model. We find that rank saturation is guaranteed in this case, leading to the important consequence that the MFV symmetry principle does not impose any restriction on the EFT, i.e. MFV SMEFT = SMEFT, in the absence of additional assumptions.

Effect of Substrate Temperature on the Electrochemical and Supercapacitance Properties of Pulsed Laser-Deposited Titanium Oxynitride Thin Films

Electrocatalytically active titanium oxynitride (TiNO) thin films were fabricated on commercially available titanium metal plates using a pulsed laser deposition method for energy storage applications. The elemental composition and nature of bonding were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to reveal the reacting species and active sites responsible for the enhanced electrochemical performance of the TiNO electrodes. Symmetric supercapacitor devices were fabricated using two TiNO working electrodes separated by an ion-transporting layer to analyze their real-time performance. The galvanostatic charge–discharge studies on the symmetric cell have indicated that TiNO films deposited on the polycrystalline titanium plates at lower temperatures are superior to TiNO films deposited at higher temperatures in terms of storage characteristics. For example, TiNO films deposited at 300 °C exhibited the highest specific capacity of 69 mF/cm 2 at 0.125 mA/cm 2 with an energy density of 7.5 Wh/cm 2 . The performance of this supercapacitor (300 °C TiNO) device is also found to be ~22% better compared to that of a 500 °C TiNO supercapacitor with a capacitance retention ability of 90% after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, the difference in the electrochemical storage and capacitance properties is attributed to the reduced leaching away of oxygen from the TiNO films by the Ti plate at lower deposition temperatures, leading to higher oxygen content in the TiNO films and, consequently, a high redox activity at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Communication — The Impact of Co-solvent Selection for Dimethyl-2,5-dioxahexane carboxylate in Sodium Ion Batteries

Traditional linear carbonates including dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) were investigated as co-solvents for the dimethyl-2,5-dioxahexane carboxylate (DMOHC)-based electrolyte in Na 0.97 Ca 0.03 [Mn 0.39 Fe 0.31 Ni 0.22 Zn 0.08 ]O 2 (NCMFNZO)/hard carbon (HC) pouch cells. The EMC-containing cell displays excellent electrochemical performance, exhibiting only a 1.6 mAh irreversible capacity loss during 500 h of storage at 4 V and 40 °C, and maintaining over 80% capacity retention after 200 cycles up to 4 V at 40 °C. Severe gas evolution and Na plating issues are present in all the tested systems.
