Integration of CeO 2 -Based Memristor with Vertically Aligned Nanocomposite Thin Film: Enabling Selective Conductive Filament Formation for High-Performance Electronic Synapses

The CeO 2 -based memristor has attracted significant attention due to its intrinsic resistive switching (RS) properties, large on/off ratio, and great plasticity, making it a promising candidate for artificial synapses. However, significant challenges such as high power consumption and poor device reliability hinder its broad application in neuromorphic microchips. To tackle these issues, in this work, we design a novel bilayer (BL) memristor by integrating a CeO 2 -based memristor with a Co-CeO 2 vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) layer and compare it with the single layer (SL) memristor. Preliminary electrical testing reveals that the BL memristor offers a reduced set/reset voltage (~67% lower), a higher on/off ratio (~5 × 10 2 ), enhanced device reliability, and improved device-to-device variation compared to the SL memristor. Insight from COMSOL simulation, coupled with microstructural analysis, provides a comprehensive elucidation on how the VAN layer facilitates the selective conductive filament (CF) formation. Subsequently, the plasticity of the BL memristor is evaluated through long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and spike-time-dependent plasticity (STDP). The spiking neural network (SNN) built upon the BL memristor achieves remarkable accuracy (~94%) after only 12 iterations, underscoring its potential for high-performance neural networks.

Target Configuration Effect on Microstructures and Properties of Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

Vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs) are unique thin films with vertical nanostructures embedded in a matrix material, allowing for the integration of two distinct materials. These nanocomposites offer novel combined physical properties, such as nanocomposite-based multiferroics and strongly coupled physical properties, such as magneto-optic coupling. Much work has been conducted in exploring different two-phase combinations and various processing conditions to achieve novel tunable properties that cannot be obtained by any single-phase material alone. Here, in this work, the target configuration effects are explored for the growth of LaFeO 3 –CoNi 2 O 4 VANs. Both mixed and pie-shaped targets are utilized to compare the target configuration effects on the phase separation, morphology tuning, and their resulting physical properties, including optical and magnetic properties. This work suggests that the target configuration is another important parameter for achieving the desired VAN morphology and can be used to design different two-phase VANs with tailorable properties.

Symmetric second-harmonic generation in sub-wavelength periodically poled thin film lithium niobate

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second-harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with the poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this paper, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in a thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370 nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but could also enable submicron ferrolectric domain structures to be leveraged in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

ZnO-Au Hybrid Metamaterial Thin Films with Tunable Optical Properties

ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films have been previously reported as hybrid metamaterials with unique optical properties such as plasmonic resonance properties and hyperbolic behaviors. In this study, Au composition in the ZnO-Au nanocomposites has been effectively tuned by target composition variation and thus resulted in microstructure and optical property tuning. Specifically, all the ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films grown through the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method show obvious vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) structure with the Au nanopillars embedded in the ZnO matrix. Moreover, the average diameter of Au nanopillars increases as Au concentration increases, which also leads to the redshifts in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength and changes in the hyperbolic behaviors of the films. As a whole, this work discusses how strain-driven tuning of optical properties and microstructure resulted through a novel Au concentration variation approach which has not been previously attempted in the ZnO-Au thin film system. These highly ordered films present great promise in the areas of sensing, waveguides, and nanophotonics to name a few.

Combinatorial Growth of Vertically Aligned Nanocomposite Thin Films for Accelerated Exploration in Composition Variation

Combinatorial growth is capable of creating a compositional gradient for thin film materials and thus has been adopted to explore composition variation mostly for metallic alloy thin films and some dopant concentrations for ceramic thin films. This study uses a combinatorial pulsed laser deposition method to successfully fabricate two‐phase oxide–oxide vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)‐NiO with variable composition across the film area. The LSMO‐NiO compositional gradient across the film alters the two‐phase morphology of the VAN through varying nanopillar size and density. Additionally, the magnetic anisotropy and magnetoresistance properties of the nanocomposite thin films increase with increasing NiO composition. This demonstration of a combinatorial method for VAN growth can increase the efficiency of nanocomposite thin film research by allowing all possible compositions of thin film materials to be explored in a single deposition.

Two-colour dissipative solitons and breathers in microresonator second-harmonic generation

Frequency conversion of dissipative solitons associated with the generation of broadband optical frequency combs having a tooth spacing of hundreds of giga-hertz is a topical challenge holding the key to practical applications in precision spectroscopy and data processing. The work in this direction is underpinned by fundamental problems in nonlinear and quantum optics. Here, we present the dissipative two-colour bright-bright and dark-dark solitons in a quasi-phase-matched microresonator pumped for the second-harmonic generation in the near-infrared spectral range. We also found the breather states associated with the pulse front motion and collisions. The soliton regime is found to be typical in slightly phase-mismatched resonators, while the phase-matched ones reveal broader but incoherent spectra and higher-order harmonic generation. Soliton and breather effects reported here exist for the negative tilt of the resonance line, which is possible only via the dominant contribution of second-order nonlinearity.

Face mask integrated with flexible and wearable manganite oxide respiration sensor

Face masks are key personal protective equipment for reducing exposure to viruses and other environmental hazards such as air pollution. Integrating flexible and wearable sensors into face masks can provide valuable insights into personal and public health. The advantages that a breath-monitoring face mask requires, including multi-functional sensing ability and continuous, long-term dynamic breathing process monitoring, have been underdeveloped to date. Here, we design an effective human breath monitoring face mask based on a flexible La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)/Mica respiration sensor. The sensor’s capabilities and systematic measurements are investigated under two application scenes, namely clinical monitoring mode and daily monitoring mode, to monitor, recognise, and analyse different human breath status, i.e., cough, normal breath, and deep breath. This sensing system exhibits super-stability and multi-modal capabilities in continuous and long-time monitoring of the human breath. We determine that during monitoring human breath, thermal diffusion in LSMO is responsible for the change of resistance in flexible LSMO/Mica sensor. Both simulated and experimental results demonstrate good discernibility of the flexible LSMO/Mica sensor operating at different breath status. Our work opens a route for the design of novel flexible and wearable electronic devices.

Novel self-assembled two-dimensional layered oxide structure incorporated with Au nanoinclusions towards multifunctionalities

Two-dimensional (2D) layered oxides have recently attracted wide attention owing to the strong coupling among charges, spins, lattice, and strain, which allows great flexibility and opportunities in structure designs as well as multifunctionality exploration. In parallel, plasmonic hybrid nanostructures exhibit exotic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) providing a broad range of applications in nanophotonic devices and sensors. A hybrid material platform combining the unique multifunctional 2D layered oxides and plasmonic nanostructures brings optical tuning into the new level. Here, a novel self-assembled Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) 2D layered oxide incorporated with plasmonic Au nanoinclusions has been demonstrated via one-step pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Comprehensive microstructural characterizations, including scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), differential phase contrast imaging (DPC), and STEM tomography, have demonstrated the high epitaxial quality and particle-in-matrix morphology of the BMO-Au nanocomposite film. DPC-STEM imaging clarifies the magnetic domain structures of BMO matrix. Three different BMO structures including layered supercell (LSC) and superlattices have been revealed which is attributed to the variable strain states throughout the BMO-Au film. Owing to the combination of plasmonic Au and layered structure of BMO, the nanocomposite film exhibits a typical LSPR in visible wavelength region and strong anisotropy in terms of its optical and ferromagnetic properties. This study opens a new avenue for developing novel 2D layered complex oxides incorporated with plasmonic metal or semiconductor phases showing great potential for applications in multifunctional nanoelectronics devices.

ZnO-Au x Cu 1-x Alloy and ZnO-Au x Al 1-x Alloy Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites for Low-Loss Plasmonic Metamaterials

Hyperbolic metamaterials are a class of materials exhibiting anisotropic dielectric function owing to the morphology of the nanostructures. In these structures, one direction behaves as a metal, and the orthogonal direction behaves as a dielectric material. Applications include subdiffraction imaging and hyperlenses. However, key limiting factors include energy losses of noble metals and challenging fabrication methods. In this work, self-assembled plasmonic metamaterials consisting of anisotropic nanoalloy pillars embedded into the ZnO matrix are developed using a seed-layer approach. Alloys of Au x Al 1-x or Au x Cu 1-x are explored due to their lower losses and higher stability. Optical and microstructural properties were explored. The ZnO-Au x Cu 1-x system demonstrated excellent epitaxial quality and optical properties compared with the ZnO-Au x Al 1-x system. Both nanocomposite systems demonstrate plasmonic resonance, hyperbolic dispersion, low losses, and epsilon-near-zero permittivity, making them promising candidates towards direct photonic integration.

A generalized 3D elastic model for nanoscale, self-assembled oxide-metal thin films with pillar-in-matrix configurations

In recent years, functional oxide-metal based vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films have gained interest due to their intriguing physical properties and multifunctionalities stemming from the complex interactions between the two phases in the film and the substrate. In this work, we develop a model for studying the energetics of these thin film systems, including the effects of both lattice mismatch and capillary forces due to interface curvature. Each phase is incorporated into the model using a phase indicator function, and we introduce the capillary forces as body forces using a vector density representation of the interface. The model is implemented using the finite element method to study the deformation of the thin film which is composed of Au nanopillars embedded in a La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) matrix on an SrTiO 3 (STO) substrate. Further, the results suggest that the total energy is lowest for random configurations of pillars compared to ordered square and hexagonal lattice configurations, consistent with the random distribution of pillars found in experiments. Furthermore, we find that the interfacial energy dominates the total energy of each configuration, suggesting that interfacial energy in the system is an important design parameter for nanocomposite growth, along with the lattice mismatch.

Efficient and tunable blue light generation using lithium niobate nonlinear photonics

Thin-film lithium niobate (LN) has recently emerged as a playground for chip-scale nonlinear optics and leads to efficient frequency conversions from near-infrared to near-visible bands. For many nonlinear and quantum photonics applications, it is desirable to operate deep into the visible band within LN's transparency window. However, the strong material dispersion at short wavelengths makes phase-matching difficult, necessitating sub-micrometer scale control of domain structures for efficient phase-matching. Here, we report the operation of thin film LN in the blue wavelength and high fidelity poling of the thin-film LN waveguide to this regime. As a result, quasi-phase matching is realized between IR (871 nm) and blue (435.5 nm) wavelengths in a straight waveguide and prompts strong blue light generation with a conversion efficiency (1040% ± 140%/W). This blue second harmonic generator exhibits stable temperature tunability, which is important for applications that require precise frequency alignment, such as atomic clocks.

High stability of flexible perovskite transparent conductive oxide film via van der Waals heteroepitaxy

Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), such as indium-tin oxide (ITO) and indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO), are essential components in the design of flexible optoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to prepare low-cost flexible transparent conductive film for achieving the flexible functionality together with high optical transparency and electrical conductivity. Herein, fluorphlogopite (mica) is selected as the bendable and transparent substrate for the fabrication of low-cost perovskite CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film. Benefitting from thin mica substrate with high Young’s modulus of 200 GPa, flexible CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film exhibits high mechanical stability in terms of electrical conductivity and optical transparency after bending up to 10 5 cycles. The change of resistance can reflect the bending curvature and strain state. Finally, our results provide a new pathway to design superior mechanical flexibility and stability CaVO 3 TCO films for application in flexible, light-weight, and portable smart optoelectronic devices.
