The gaseous environments of double radio galaxies

A detailed investigation is made of the X-ray emission from five 3CR double radio galaxies, and upper limits are set to the X-ray emissivity of the regions around the radio lobes. These limits, when combined with the expected behavior of hot gas in and around the lobes, show that most of the radio-emitting plasma observed is unlikely to be maintained in static pressure-balance with an external medium. The plasma must expand, and the luminosities of double radio galaxies may therefore decrease with time for most of their lifetimes. A lower limit on the magnetic field strength in the lobes of one-tenth the equipartition value is also derived.

Reflections on the Space Telescope

The significance of the Space Telescope for the advancement of astronomy and astrophysics is described. The current state of knowledge in astronomy and cosmology is summarized and unanswered questions in those fields discussed. The rapid evolution of modern astronomy and the need for systematic observations are stressed.

Scientific Research with the Space Telescope: International Astronomical Union Colloquium No. 54

The application of the space telescope for extragalactic astronomy, planetary research, and stellar, interstellar, and galactic structural problems is discussed. Topics include investigations of small solar system objects, the physical characteristics of ionized gaseous nebulae, the central regions of active galaxies and quasars, problems of cosmology, and the distribution and composition of interstellar matter.

Radio astronomers, X-ray astronomers and the space telescope

The use of the Space Telescope and the study of objects in the radio and X-ray wavebands, particularly extragalactic objects, are discussed. The scientific objectives of a number of projects which involve observations with the Space Telescope are described.
