Synthesis of epitaxial TaO$_2$ thin films on Al$_2$O$_3$ by suboxide molecular-beam epitaxy and thermal laser epitaxy

Tantalum dioxide (TaO2) is a metastable tantalum compound. Here, we report the epitaxial stabilization of TaO2 on Al2O3 (1-102) (r-plane sapphire) substrates using suboxide molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) and thermal laser epitaxy (TLE), demonstrating single-oriented, monodomain growth of anisotropically strained thin films. Microstructural investigation is performed using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The tetravalent oxidation state of tantalum is confirmed using X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy as well as electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Optical properties are investigated via spectroscopic ellipsometry and reveal a 0.3 eV Mott gap of the tantalum 5d electrons. Density-functional theory and group theoretical arguments are used to evaluate the limited stability of the rutile phase and reveal the potential to unlock a hidden metal-insulator transition concomitant with a structural phase transition to a distorted rutile phase, akin to NbO2. Our work expands the understanding of tantalum oxides and paves the way for their integration into next-generation electronic and photonic devices.

Predicting phase transitions in PbTi⁢O 3 using zentropy through quasiharmonic phonon calculations

According to x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, PbTi⁢O 3 undergoes a phase transition from a tetragonal ferroelectric (FE) phase to a cubic paraelectric phase at 763 K. However, x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) measurements indicate that PbTi⁢O 3 is locally tetragonal even after the phase transition. The difference in these results is because XAFS measurements can probe local features of a structure, while XRD averages over such local features. For both measurements to be consistent, PbTi⁢O 3 is macroscopically cubic but locally tetragonal after the phase transition. Despite this, most models, such as the Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire theory and effective Hamiltonians, are still unable to explain this phenomenon. Moreover, these methods involve model parameters fitted to experimental or theoretical data and do not consider other tetragonal configurations, such as domain walls, to predict the phase transition. In our previous study, we used our zentropy approach to predict the phase transition by considering the tetragonal FE ground-state configuration and the tetragonal 90° and 180° domain wall configurations with their total energies at 0 K. Here, in this paper, the Helmholtz energies of the three configurations are obtained from density functional theory calculations through energy-volume curves and phonon calculations. The predicted phase transition temperature using the meta-GGA 𝑟 2⁢ SCAN and revised multiplicities of configurations is 716 K, showing good agreement with the experimental value of 763 K.

Simultaneous Optimization of Crystal Plasticity Hardening Parameters

Crystal plasticity models relate macroscopic deformation behavior to the evolution of slip systems strength, but their parameterization is often non-unique, with multiple parameter sets being able to describe the same macroscopic behavior. To address this issue, the present work adopts a Bayesian optimization framework for the parameterization of face-centered cubic plasticity models while simultaneously considering multiple experimental datasets from the literature. For single crystal Cu, parameter optimization was guided by the tensile stress–strain curves along several crystallographic orientations, with an adequate fit being found for five orientations at once. While additional parameters allowed for the consideration of more physical mechanisms, like different slip system interaction strengths or misorientations inherent to the experimental data, the extra dimensionality was found to limit the efficiency of the global minimization procedure. For polycrystalline Ni, multiple grain sizes were considered together in a representative polycrystalline model, with the optimization able to reconcile the model with the data for three grain sizes at once. As meaningful interpretation of parameters relies on the uniqueness of their values, incorporating multiple datasets into this discerning parameterization procedure enables more robust prediction and application of crystal plasticity models.

On Gibbs Equilibrium and Hillert Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics

During his time at Royal Institute of Technology (Kungliga Tekniska högskolan) in Sweden, the present author learned nonequilibrium thermodynamics from Mats Hillert. The key concepts are the separation of internal and external variables of a system and the definitions of potentials and molar quantities. In equilibrium thermodynamics derived by Gibbs, the internal variables are not independent and can be fully evaluated from given external variables. While irreversible thermodynamics led by Onsager focuses on internal variables though often mixed with external variables. Hillert integrated them together by first emphasizing their differences and then examining their connections. His philosophy was reflected by the title of his book “Phase Equilibria, Phase Diagrams and Phase Transformations” that puts equilibrium, nonequilibrium, and internal processes on equal footing. Here, in the present paper honoring Hillert, the present author reflects his experiences with Hillert and his work in last 40 years and expresses his gratitude for all the wisdom and support from him in terms of “Hillert nonequilibrium thermodynamics” and discusses some recent topics that the present author has been working on.

MaterialsMap: A CALPHAD-based tool to design composition pathways through feasibility map for desired dissimilar materials, demonstrated with resistance spot welding joining of Ag-Al-Cu

Assembly of dissimilar metals can be achieved by different methods, for example, casting, welding, and additive manufacturing (AM). However, undesired phases formed in liquid-phase assembling processes due to solute segregation during solidification diminish mechanical and other properties of the processed parts. In the present work, an open-source software named MaterialsMap, has been developed based on the CALculation of Phase Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach. The primary objective of MaterialsMap is to facilitate the design of an optimal composition pathway for assembling dissimilar alloys with liquid-phases based on the formation of desired and undesired phases along the pathway. In MaterialsMap, equilibrium thermodynamic calculations are used to predict equilibrium phases formed at slow cooling rate, while Scheil-Gulliver simulations are employed to predict non-equilibrium phases formed during rapid cooling. Additionally, by combining these two simulations, MaterialsMap offers a thorough guide for understanding phase formation in various manufacturing processes, assisting users in making informed decisions during material selection and production. As a demonstration of this approach, a compositional pathway was designed from pure Al to pure Cu through Ag using MaterialsMap. The design was experimentally verified using resistance spot welding (RSW).

Electronic-grade epitaxial (111) KTaO 3 heterostructures

KTaO 3 heterostructures have recently attracted attention as model systems to study the interplay of quantum paraelectricity, spin-orbit coupling, and superconductivity. However, the high and low vapor pressures of potassium and tantalum present processing challenges to creating heterostructure interfaces clean enough to reveal the intrinsic quantum properties. Here, we report superconducting heterostructures based on high-quality epitaxial (111) KTaO 3 thin films using an adsorption-controlled hybrid PLD to overcome the vapor pressure mismatch. Electrical and structural characterizations reveal that the higher-quality heterostructure interface between amorphous LaAlO 3 and KTaO 3 thin films supports a two-dimensional electron gas with substantially higher electron mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and critical current density than that in bulk single-crystal KTaO 3 -based heterostructures. Our hybrid approach may enable epitaxial growth of other alkali metal–based oxides that lie beyond the capabilities of conventional methods.

Thermodynamic Modeling of the YO(l.5)-ZrO2 System

The YO1.5-ZrO2 system consists of five solid solutions, one liquid solution, and one intermediate compound. A thermodynamic description of this system is developed, which allows calculation of the phase diagram and thermodynamic properties. Two different solution models are used-a neutral species model with YO1.5 and ZrO2 as the components and a charged species model with Y(+3), Zr(+4), O(-2), and vacancies as components. For each model, regular and sub-regular solution parameters are derived fiom selected equilibrium phase and thermodynamic data.

Thermodynamic Assessment of the Y2o3-yb2o3-zro2 System

Yttria-zirconia (Y2O3-ZrO2) is the most widely used of the rare earth oxide-zirconia systems. There are numerous experimental studies of the phase boundaries in this system. In this paper, we assess these data and derive parameters for the solution models in this system. There is current interest in other rare earth oxide-zirconia systems as well as systems with several rare earth oxides and zirconia, which may offer improved properties over the Y2O3-ZrO2 system. For this reason, we also assess the ytterbia-zirconia (Yb2O3-ZrO2) and Y2O3-Yb2O3-ZrO2 system.
