Formation of three-dimensional bicontinuous structures via molten salt dealloying studied in real-time by in situ synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography

Abstract Three-dimensional bicontinuous porous materials formed by dealloying contribute significantly to various applications including catalysis, sensor development and energy storage. This work studies a method of molten salt dealloying via real-time in situ synchrotron three-dimensional X-ray nano-tomography. Quantification of morphological parameters determined that long-range diffusion is the rate-determining step for the dealloying process. The subsequent coarsening rate was primarily surface diffusion controlled, with Rayleigh instability leading to ligament pinch-off and creating isolated bubbles in ligaments, while bulk diffusion leads to a slight densification. Chemical environments characterized by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopic imaging show that molten salt dealloying prevents surface oxidation of the metal. In this work, gaining a fundamental mechanistic understanding of the molten salt dealloying process in forming porous structures provides a nontoxic, tunable dealloying technique and has important implications for molten salt corrosion processes, which is one of the major challenges in molten salt reactors and concentrated solar power plants.

Kinetically Controlled Self-Assembly of Binary Polymer-Grafted Nanocrystals into Ordered Superstructures via Solvent Vapor Annealing

Polymer-inorganic nanocomposites based on polymer-grafted nanocrystals (PGNCs) are enabling technologically relevant applications owing to their unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. While diverse PGNC superstructures have been realized through evaporation-driven self-assembly, this approach presents multifaceted challenges in experimentally probing and controlling assembly kinetics. Here, we report a kinetically controlled assembly of binary superstructures from a homogeneous disordered PGNC mixture utilizing solvent vapor annealing (SVA). Using a NaZn 13 -type superstructure as a model system, we demonstrate that varying the solvent vapor pressure during SVA allows for exquisite control of the rate and extent of PGNC assembly, providing access to nearly complete kinetic pathways of binary PGNC crystallization. Characterization of kinetically arrested intermediates reveals that assembly follows a multistep crystallization pathway involving spinodal-like preordering of PGNCs prior to NaZn 13 nucleation. Our work opens up new avenues for the synthesis of multicomponent PGNC superstructures exhibiting multifunctionalities and emergent properties through a thorough understanding of kinetic pathways.

Fine-tuned thermally cross-linkable 6FDA-based polyimide membranes for aggressive natural gas separation

Glassy 6FDA-based polyimides are attractive membrane materials for many industrially important gas separations; however, plasticization in aggressive natural gas often causes significant loss in CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity. In this study, a family of thermally cross-linkable 6FDA-based polyimides containing carboxyl groups were synthesized and cross-linked as dense films via decarboxylation-induced thermal crosslinking. As well as chemical structure, crosslinking temperatures above and below T g are shown to be synergistic tools. Our results demonstrate that structure evolution during the decarboxylation-induced crosslinking process is affected significantly by the 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) content in the polymer backbone. Even for a 50/50 CO 2 /CH 4 binary mixture with feed pressure up to 800 psia, decarboxylation-induced crosslinking provides attractive gas separation performance and plasticization resistance. Combined facile structure tunability, crosslinkability and high asymmetric fiber spinnability make the cross-linkable 6FDA-based polyimides a versatile platform for diverse aggressive natural gas feeds encountered in practice. Finally, our study provides insights into material design of thermally cross-linkable polymer membranes for such a broad spectrum of aggressive gas separations.

Anisotropic c – f Hybridization in the Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Metal CeRh 6 Ge 4

Heavy fermion compounds exhibiting a ferromagnetic quantum critical point have attracted considerable interest. Common to two known cases, i.e., CeRh 6 Ge 4 and YbNi 4 P 2 , is that the 4f moments reside along chains with a large interchain distance, exhibiting strong magnetic anisotropy that was proposed to be vital for the ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Here, we report an angle-resolved photoemission study on CeRh 6 Ge 4 in which we observe sharp momentum-dependent 4f bands and clear bending of the conduction bands near the Fermi level, indicating considerable hybridization between conduction and 4f electrons. The extracted hybridization strength is anisotropic in momentum space and is obviously stronger along the Ce chain direction. The hybridized 4f bands persist up to high temperatures, and the evolution of their intensity shows clear band dependence. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence for anisotropic hybridization between conduction and 4f electrons in CeRh 6 Ge 4 , which could be important for understanding the electronic origin of the ferromagnetic quantum criticality.

Thermally Aged Li–Mn–O Cathode with Stabilized Hybrid Cation and Anion Redox

Though low-cost and environmentally friendly, Li–Mn–O cathodes suffer from low energy density. Although synthesized Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 -like overlithiated spinel cathode with reversible hybrid anion- and cation-redox (HACR) activities has a high initial capacity, it degrades rapidly due to oxygen loss and side-reaction-induced electrolyte decomposition. In this study, we develop a two-step heat treatment to promote local decomposition as Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 → 2LiMn 2 O 4 + Li 2 MnO 3 + 1/2 O 2 ↑, which releases near-surface reactive oxygen that is harmful to cycling stability. The produced nanocomposite delivers a high discharge capacity of 225 mAh/g and energy density of over 700 Wh/kg at active-material level at a current density of 100 mA/g between 1.8 to 4.7 V. Benefiting from suppressed oxygen loss and side reactions, 80% capacity retention is achieved after 214 cycles in half cells. With industrially acceptable electrolyte amount (6 g/Ah), full cells paired with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode have a good retention over 100 cycles.

Pathways of China's PM 2.5 air quality 2015–2060 in the context of carbon neutrality

Clean air policies in China have substantially reduced particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) air pollution in recent years, primarily by curbing end-of-pipe emissions. However, reaching the level of the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines may instead depend upon the air quality co-benefits of ambitious climate action. Here, we assess pathways of Chinese PM 2.5 air quality from 2015 to 2060 under a combination of scenarios that link global and Chinese climate mitigation pathways (i.e. global 2°C- and 1.5°C-pathways, National Determined Contributions (NDC) pledges and carbon neutrality goals) to local clean air policies. We find that China can achieve both its near-term climate goals (peak emissions) and PM 2.5 air quality annual standard (35 μg/m3) by 2030 by fulfilling its NDC pledges and continuing air pollution control policies. However, the benefits of end-of-pipe control reductions are mostly exhausted by 2030, and reducing PM 2.5 exposure of the majority of the Chinese population to below 10 μg/m 3 by 2060 will likely require more ambitious climate mitigation efforts such as China's carbon neutrality goals and global 1.5°C-pathways. Our results thus highlight that China's carbon neutrality goals will play a critical role in reducing air pollution exposure to the level of the WHO guidelines and protecting public health.

Dielectric polymers for high-temperature capacitive energy storage

Polymers are the preferred materials for dielectrics in high-energy-density capacitors. The electrification of transport and growing demand for advanced electronics require polymer dielectrics capable of operating efficiently at high temperatures. In this review, we critically analyze the most recent development in the dielectric polymers for high-temperature capacitive energy storage applications. While general design considerations are discussed, emphasis is placed on the elucidation of the structural dependence of the high-field dielectric and electrical properties and the capacitive performance, including discharged energy density, charge–discharge efficiency and cyclability, of dielectric polymers at high temperatures. Here, advantages and limitations of current approaches to high-temperature dielectric polymers are summarized. Challenges along with future research opportunities are highlighted at the end of this article.

Examination of Semi-Analytical Solution Methods in the Coarse Operator of Parareal Algorithm for Power System Simulation

With continuing advances in high-performance parallel computing platforms, parallel algorithms have become powerful tools for development of faster than real-time power system dynamic simulations. In particular, it has been demonstrated in recent years that parallel-in-time (Parareal) algorithms have the potential to achieve such an ambitious goal. Here, the selection of a fast and reasonably accurate coarse operator of the Parareal algorithm is crucial for its effective utilization and performance. This paper examines semi-analytical solution (SAS) methods as the coarse operators of the Parareal algorithm and explores performance of the SAS methods to the standard numerical time integration methods. Two promising time-power series-based SAS methods were considered; Adomian decomposition method and Homotopy analysis method with a windowing approach for improving the convergence. Numerical performance case studies on 10-generator 39-bus system and 327-generator 2383-bus system were performed for these coarse operators over different disturbances, evaluating the number of Parareal iterations, computational time, and stability of convergence. All the coarse operators tested with different scenarios have converged to the same corresponding true solution (if they are convergent) and the SAS methods provide comparable computational speed, while having more stable convergence to the true solution in many cases.

Uncertainty quantification for Multiphase-CFD simulations of bubbly flows: a machine learning-based Bayesian approach supported by high-resolution experiments

In this paper, we developed a machine learning-based Bayesian approach to inversely quantify and reduce the uncertainties of multiphase computational fluid dynamics (MCFD) simulations for bubbly flows. The proposed approach is supported by high-resolution two-phase flow measurements, including those by double-sensor conductivity probes, high-speed imaging, and particle image velocimetry. Local distributions of key physical quantities of interest (QoIs), including the void fraction and phasic velocities, are obtained to support the Bayesian inference. In the process, the epistemic uncertainties of the closure relations are inversely quantified while the aleatory uncertainties from stochastic fluctuations of the system are evaluated based on experimental uncertainty analysis. The combined uncertainties are then propagated through the MCFD solver to obtain uncertainties of the QoIs, based on which probability-boxes are constructed for validation. The proposed approach relies on three machine learning methods: feedforward neural networks and principal component analysis for surrogate modeling, and Gaussian processes for model form uncertainty modeling. The whole process is implemented within the framework of an open-source deep learning library PyTorch with graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration, thus ensuring the efficiency of the computation. The results demonstrate that with the support of high-resolution data, the uncertainties of MCFD simulations can be significantly reduced. The proposed approach has the potential for other applications that involve numerical models with empirical parameters.

Butterfly Factorization Via Randomized Matrix-Vector Multiplications

This paper presents an adaptive randomized algorithm for computing the butterfly factorization of an m × n matrix with m ≈ n provided that both the matrix and its transpose can be rapidly applied to arbitrary vectors. The resulting factorization is composed of O(log n) sparse factors, each containing O(n) nonzero entries. The factorization can be attained using O(n 3/2 log n) computation and O(n log n) memory resources. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be implemented in parallel and can apply to matrices with strong or weak admissibility conditions arising from surface integral equation solvers as well as multi-frontal-based finite-difference, finite-element, or finite-volume solvers. A distributed-memory parallel implementation of the algorithm demonstrates excellent scaling behavior.

Sample Return Container Opening Process Concept for Potential Mars Sample Return

Proposed Mars Sample Return (MSR) missions would require a pristine and secure opening method to ensure sample Contamination Control and backward Planetary Protection. In order to reach the samples, a series of five containers would need to be opened inside of a Mars Returned Sample Handling (MRSH) facility. The process would include opening the Containment Assurance Module (CAM) aboard the Earth Entry Vehicle (EEV), the Secondary Containment Vessel (SCV), Primary Containment Vessel (PCV), and the Orbiting Sample (OS) container, and finally removing and opening the Returned Sample Tube Assemblies (RSTA). Some of these containers can be opened by reversing the mechanical assembly process while others would require destructive means. Several containers are still in a conceptual design phase while others are en route to Mars aboard the M2020 rover. In order to inform the design of the containers that are still in the conceptual stages, a study was performed at each level of the containment assembly. The studies were used to determine the least destructive and most robust methods to disassemble and open the containers while minimizing risk to the samples or the personnel. In addition to the envisioned disassembly and breaching method, contingency plans were made for completing the disassembly if damage to the vehicle and containment system occurred.

Controlling Infrared Plasmon Resonances in Inverse-Spinel Cadmium Stannate Nanocrystals via Site-Selective Cation-Exchange Reactions

Doped metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit tunable localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in the infrared spectral region. Compared to the binary oxides commonly studied, plasmonic NCs derived from ternary oxides remain far less explored primarily due to the difficulty of controlling NC phase-purity and stoichiometry. Here, we report the synthesis of inverse spinel-type cadmium stannate (Cd 2 SnO 4 ) NCs, for which cation-exchange reactions were developed to tailor their composition and LSPR properties. X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies revealed that the inequivalent tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated Cd 2+ can be selectively exchanged for Cu + and In 3+ ions, respectively, enabling broadband tunable LSPR and Cu-mediated cation-exchange with lanthanide ions that are otherwise difficult to incorporate. Here, our work paves the way for systematic compositional engineering to accelerate the design of complex metal oxide NCs with emerging plasmonic, electronic, and magnetic properties.

X-ray-Based Techniques to Study the Nano–Bio Interface

X-ray-based analytics are routinely applied in many fields, including physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering. The full potential of such techniques in the life sciences and medicine, however, has not yet been fully exploited. We highlight current and upcoming advances in this direction. We describe different X-ray-based methodologies (including those performed at synchrotron light sources and X-ray free-electron lasers) and their potentials for application to investigate the nano–bio interface. The discussion is predominantly guided by asking how such methods could better help to understand and to improve nanoparticle-based drug delivery, though the concepts also apply to nano–bio interactions in general. We discuss current limitations and how they might be overcome, particularly for future use in vivo.

Binary and Ternary Colloidal Cu–Sn–Te Nanocrystals for Thermoelectric Thin Films

Recent advances in copper chalcogenide-based nanocrystals (NCs), copper sulfide, and copper selenide derived nanostructures, have drawn considerable attention. However, reports of crystal phase and shape engineering of binary or ternary copper telluride NCs remain rare. Here, a colloidal hot-injection approach for producing binary copper/tin telluride, and ternary copper tin telluride NCs with controllable compositions, crystal structures, and morphologies is reported. Here, the crystal phase and growth behavior of these tellurides are systematically studied from both experimental and theoretical perspectives.

Penetrant competition and plasticization in membranes: How negatives can be positives in natural gas sweetening

Membranes are attractive for upgrading natural gas; however, the gas permeation processes through membranes are challenging to control. The coexistence of condensable H 2 S and CO 2 typically causes membrane performance to decline under practical feed conditions, due to uncontrolled penetrant competition and undesired plasticization of the membrane polymer matrix. In this paper, we report a strategy to successfully transform these apparent negatives, i.e. plasticization and penetrant competition, into positives that boost the natural gas sweetening efficiency of membranes greatly. Our strategy is to disperse engineered metal organic framework (MOF) fillers into designed polymer matrices to form hybrid membranes, which promote the permeation of both H 2 S and CO 2 but hinder CH 4 permeation. Moreover, uniformly dispersed MOF fillers also significantly alter the plasticization responses of polymer matrices, enabling controlled plasticization benefits. Ultimately, we illustrate a highly tunable MOF-polymer hybrid membrane platform that meets the diverse natural gas sweetening requirements under aggressive conditions.
