Visualization of Chiral Electronic Structure and Anomalous Optical Response in a Material with Chiral Charge Density Waves

Chiral materials have attracted significant research interests as they exhibit intriguing physical properties, such as chiral optical response, spin-momentum locking, and chiral induced spin selectivity. Recently, layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T–TaS 2 has been found to host a chiral charge density wave (CDW) order. Nevertheless, the physical consequences of the chiral order, for example, in electronic structures and the optical properties, are yet to be explored. Here, we report the spectroscopic visualization of an emergent chiral electronic band structure in the CDW phase, characterized by windmill-shaped Fermi surfaces. Further, we uncover a remarkable chirality-dependent circularly polarized Raman response due to the salient in-plane chiral symmetry of CDW, although the ordinary circular dichroism vanishes. Chiral Fermi surfaces and anomalous Raman responses coincide with the CDW transition, proving their lattice origin. Our Letter paves a path to manipulate the chiral electronic and optical properties in two-dimensional materials and explore applications in polarization optics and spintronics.

Skyrmion-Based Programmable Logic Device with Complete Boolean Logic Functions

A skyrmionic programmable logic device (SkrPLD) with complete Boolean logic functions is proposed and analyzed by micromagnetic simulations. The SkrPLD is based on an antiferromagnet/ferromagnet bilayer structure, in which the antiferromagnetic layer supports the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and the out-of-plane exchange bias field for stabilizing a zero-field skyrmion. By varying the local exchange bias field, artificial pinning sites are introduced for trapping the skyrmions. Depending on the input currents and the initial position of skyrmions at different pinning sites, different logic functions can be realized. Micromagnetic simulations show that the proposed SkrPLD has robust performance even under thermal fluctuations and inhomogeneity effects. Our work can provide insights for the design of programmable spin logic devices.

Robust Skyrmion Shift Device Through Engineering the Local Exchange-Bias Field

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin structures, offering great promise as information carriers for future spintronic devices. However, a series of challenges, such as unreliable skyrmion motion, pinning effects, and a weak read-out signal, prevent the development of skyrmionic applications. The recently demonstrated capability to engineer the local exchange-bias field (LEBF) in an exchange biased composite, provides solutions to these challenges. By exploiting LEBF, we design and analyze a robust skyrmion shift device. LEBF-induced magnetic domain walls form the boundary of the device channel, and LEBF potential wells are implemented in the channel for positioning skyrmions. Based on simulations with comprehensive models, we demonstrate the proposed device has the advantages of (i) localizing the skyrmions in the absence of current, (ii) suppressing skyrmion annihilation during transport, (iii) promoting steady skyrmion motion, (iv) enhancing the skyrmion velocity, and (v) magnifying the read-out signal. Our results form the basis for the design of robust skyrmion devices through LEBF engineering.
