Boosting Tin Perovskite Solar Cell Performance via Light-Induced Interface Doping

Continuous breakthroughs have been achieved in the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) in recent years. Inspired by performance improvements observed during device storage, we identified beneficial light-induced interface doping (LIID) in the TPSCs. In situ analyses using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that ion migration and oxidation at the interface induce beneficial doping effects, enhancing carrier transport and significantly boosting device performance. By implementing specific illumination techniques or maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods to achieve LIID, we increased the open-circuit voltage while maintaining a high short-circuit current, reaching a PCE of up to 14.91%. Furthermore, this efficiency was sustained at 70% of its maximum value after nearly 900 h of continuous operation. Our study introduces a novel approach to addressing energy band mismatch, paving the way for improved efficiency in tin-based perovskite solar cells.

Flexible Soft X-Ray Image Sensors based on Metal Halide Perovskites With High Quantum Efficiency

Soft X-ray imaging is a powerful tool to explore the structure of cells, probe material with nanometer resolution, and investigate the energetic phenomena in the universe. Conventional soft X-ray image sensors are by and large Si-based charge coupled devices that suffer from low frame rates, complex fabrication processes, mechanical inflexibility, and required cooling below -60 °C. Here, a soft X-ray photodiode is reported based on low-cost metal halide perovskite with comparable performance to commercial Si-based device. Nanothrough network electrode minimized the optical loss due to the shadowing of insensitive layers, while a multidimensional perovskite heterojunction is generated to reduce the photo-generated carrier loss. Further, this strategy promoted a record quantum efficiency of 8 × 10 3 % without cooling, several orders of magnitude greater than the previously achieved. Flexible and curved soft X-ray imaging arrays are fabricated based on this high-performance device structure, demonstrating stable soft X-ray response and sharp imaging capabilities. This work highlights the low-cost and efficient perovskite photodiode as a strong candidate for the next-generation soft X-ray image sensors.

Reconfigurable Grating Diffraction Structural Color in Self-Assembled Colloidal Crystals

Self-assembled colloidal crystals display structural colors due to light diffracted from their microscale, ordered structure. This color arises due to Bragg reflection (BR) or grating diffraction (GD); the latter mechanism is much less explored than the former. Here the design space for generating GD structural color is identified and its relative advantages are demonstrated. Electrophoretic deposition is used to self-assemble crystals with fine crystal grains from colloids of diameter 1.0 µm. The structural color in transmission is tunable across the full visible spectrum. The optimum optical response—represented by both color intensity and saturation—is observed at low layer number (≤5 layers). The spectral response is well predicted by Mie scattering of the crystals. Taken together, the experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that vivid grating colors with high color saturation can be produced from thin layers of micron-sized colloids. These colloidal crystals extend the potential of artificial structural color materials.
