Structural origin of recovered ferroelectricity in BaTi O 3 nanoparticles

Nanoscale BaTiO 3 particles (≈10 nm) prepared by ball-milling a mixture of oleic acid and heptane have been reported to have an electric polarization several times larger than that for bulk BaTiO 3 . In this work, detailed local, intermediate, and long-range structural studies are combined with spectroscopic measurements to develop a model structure of these materials. The X-ray spectroscopic measurements reveal large Ti off-centering as the key factor producing the large spontaneous polarization in the nanoparticles. Temperature-dependent lattice parameter changes reveal the sharpening of the structural phase transitions in these BaTiO 3 nanoparticles compared to the pure nanoparticle systems. In conclusion, sharp crystalline-type peaks in the barium oleate Raman spectra suggest that this component in the composite core-shell matrix, a product of mechanochemical synthesis, stabilizes an enhanced polar structural phase of the BaTiO 3 core nanoparticles.

Modeling of plasma beta effects on the island divertor transport in the standard configuration of W7-X

The influence of plasma beta effects on the edge plasma transport in the Wendelstein 7-X standard configuration is studied systematically by using EMC3-EIRENE combined with a 3D equilibrium code named HINT. The magnetic topology changes induced by plasma beta effects are significantly reflected in plasma transport behaviors and heat flux patterns on divertor targets. After validating the modeling strategy by comparisons with experimental data, the extended simulations for high performance plasmas show that the threshold separatrix density for accessing the power detachment is reduced in higher beta plasmas. Compared with the vacuum field case, the impurity radiation distributions with finite beta effects are modified in the magnetic island region. The divertor heat flux is distributed more evenly along the toroidal direction on the strike line at the vertical target. The strike line on the horizontal target moves towards the pumping gap with an increase in the plasma beta. In addition, the different pressure profiles with the same central beta also result in a modified heat flux pattern on the divertor targets.

A flexible proton beam imaging energy spectrometer (PROBIES) for high repetition rate or single-shot high energy density (HED) experiments (invited)

The PROBIES diagnostic is a new, highly flexible, imaging and energy spectrometer designed for laser-accelerated protons. The diagnostic can detect low-mode spatial variations in the proton beam profile while resolving multiple energies on a single detector or more. When a radiochromic film stack is employed for “single-shot mode,” the energy resolution of the stack can be greatly increased while reducing the need for large numbers of films; for example, a recently deployed version allowed for 180 unique energy measurements spanning ~3 to 75 MeV with <0.4 MeV resolution using just 20 films vs 180 for a comparable traditional film and filter stack. When utilized with a scintillator, the diagnostic can be run in high-rep-rate (>Hz rate) mode to recover nine proton energy bins. Here, we also demonstrate a deep learning-based method to analyze data from synthetic PROBIES images with greater than 95% accuracy on sub-millisecond timescales and retrained with experimental data to analyze real-world images on sub-millisecond time-scales with comparable accuracy.

Negative refraction in hyperbolic hetero-bicrystals

We visualized negative refraction of phonon polaritons, which occurs at the interface between two natural crystals. The polaritons—hybrids of infrared photons and lattice vibrations—form collimated rays that display negative refraction when passing through a planar interface between the two hyperbolic van der Waals materials: molybdenum oxide (MoO 3 ) and isotopically pure hexagonal boron nitride (h 11 BN). At a special frequency ω 0 , these rays can circulate along closed diamond-shaped trajectories. We have shown that polariton eigenmodes display regions of both positive and negative dispersion interrupted by multiple gaps that result from polaritonic-level repulsion and strong coupling.

Exploring the Dirac nature of RbBi 2

Characteristics of topological semimetals such as a nonsaturating magnetoresistance (MR), a field-induced metal to semiconducting crossover and a robust resistivity plateau are observed under a magnetic field in type-I RbBi 2 bulk superconductor with $\mathrm{T}$ c = 4.15 K. The MR exhibits a notable 3500% increase at 2 K and 9 T and the resistivity follows a power law temperature dependence, while the MR ∝ $\mathrm{H}$ 1.26 , indicating weak carrier compensation. Further, first principles calculations provided insights into the dynamical stability of the cubic structure at 0 K. Both hole and electron pockets are observed at the Fermi surface. The electron-phonon interaction constant indicates weak coupling strength (<1) that leads to a maximum predicted $\mathrm{T}$ c of 2.852 K. Just below the Fermi level, E F , the electronic band structure consists of linear band crossings at the $\mathrm{X}$ points in the Brillouin zone (BZ) corresponding to massless, symmetry-protected Dirac fermions.

First-principles analysis of the Al-rich corner of Al-Li-Cu phase diagram

The phase diagram of Al-Li-Cu system in the Al-rich region was determined by means of first-principles calculations and statistical mechanics. The mixing enthalpies of many configurations for different lattices in the whole Al-Li-Cu system were determined by density functional theory simulations to find the stable phases in the convex hull. They were fitted with a cluster expansion to calculate the free energy of the configurations with different compositions as a function of temperature in the Al-rich region (Al content > 40 at.%) by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that the ground state phases in the Al-rich part of the Al-Li-Cu phase diagram were α-Al, θ' (Al 2 Cu), $δ$' (Al 3 Li), $δ$ (AlLi) and T 1 (Al 6 Cu 4 Li 3 ), while θ'' (Al 3 Cu), T 1' (Al 2 CuLi) and Al 3 Cu 2 Li were found on the lowest mixing enthalpy surfaces of their lattices and were metastable. α-Al, $δ$ and T 1 are stable phases in the whole temperature range while $δ$' becomes metastable at very low temperature and θ (Al 2 Cu) replaces θ' as the stable phase at approximately 550 K due to the vibrational entropic contribution. In addition, the phase diagram in the Al-rich region was built and it was shown in isothermal sections from 100 to 900 K. They were in good agreement with the limited experimental data in the literature and provided new information regarding the stability, solubility and stoichiometry of the different phases. This information is important to understand the precipitation mechanisms during high temperature aging.

Accelerating the rate of discovery: toward high-repetition-rate HED science

As high-intensity short-pulse lasers that can operate at high-repetition-rate (HRR) (>10 H z ) come online around the world, the high energy density (HED) science they enable will experience a radical paradigm shift. The >10 3 increase in shot rate over today's shot-per-hour drivers translates into dramatically faster data acquisition, more experiments, and the ability to exploit machine learning, and thus the potential to significantly accelerate the advancement of HED science. A wide range of HED experiments, from opacity investigations to secondary source generation to plasma nuclear physics, will benefit from the increased statistics, precision, and exploration of phase space. Besides increasing the rate at which scientific experiments can be performed, HRR also allows for the rapid delivery of optimal experiments supported by simulations and modeling augmented by close coupling to empirical data. To fully realize such an HRR framework, numerous subsystems must be developed and brought together, including feedback laser control loops, high-throughput targetry and diagnostics, cognitive simulation, enhanced HED codes, and advanced data analytics. This paper describes the vision for an integrated HRR laser experimental HED system and outlines some of the major considerations and challenges for realizing it.

Observation of topological superconductivity in a stoichiometric transition metal dichalcogenide 2M-WS 2

Topological superconductors (TSCs) are unconventional superconductors with bulk superconducting gap and in-gap Majorana states on the boundary that may be used as topological qubits for quantum computation. Despite their importance in both fundamental research and applications, natural TSCs are very rare. Here, combining state of the art synchrotron and laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated a stoichiometric transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), 2M-WS 2 with a superconducting transition temperature of 8.8 K (the highest among all TMDs in the natural form up to date) and observed distinctive topological surface states (TSSs). Furthermore, in the superconducting state, we found that the TSSs acquired a nodeless superconducting gap with similar magnitude as that of the bulk states. These discoveries not only evidence 2M-WS 2 as an intrinsic TSC without the need of sensitive composition tuning or sophisticated heterostructures fabrication, but also provide an ideal platform for device applications thanks to its van der Waals layered structure.

Transition between Instability and Seeded Self-Modulation of a Relativistic Particle Bunch in Plasma

We use a relativistic ionization front to provide various initial transverse wakefield amplitudes for the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in plasma. We show experimentally that, with sufficient initial amplitude [ ≥ ( 4.1 ± 0.4) MV / m ], the phase of the modulation along the bunch is reproducible from event to event, with 3%–7% (of 2 π ) rms variations all along the bunch. The phase is not reproducible for lower initial amplitudes. We observe the transition between these two regimes. Phase reproducibility is essential for deterministic external injection of particles to be accelerated.

Measurement of electronic structure and surface reconstruction in the superionic Cu 2-x Te

Recently, layered copper chalcogenides Cu 2 X family (X=S, Se, Te) has attracted tremendous research interests due to their high thermoelectric performance, which is partly due to the superionic behavior of mobile Cu ions, making these compounds "phonon liquids."Here, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and its temperature evolution of the less studied single crystal Cu 2-x Te by the combination of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments. While the band structure of the Cu 2-x Te shows agreement with the calculations, we clearly observe a 2×2 surface reconstruction from both our low temperature ARPES and STM/STS experiments which survives up to room temperature. Interestingly, our low temperature STM experiments further reveal multiple types of reconstruction patterns, which suggests the origin of the surface reconstruction being the distributed deficiency of liquidlike Cu ions. Our findings reveal the electronic structure and impurity level of Cu 2 Te, which provides knowledge about its thermoelectric properties from the electronic degree of freedom.
