Structural origin of size effect on piezoelectric performance of Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3

Grain size effect plays a vital role in piezoelectric performance from both scientific and technological view. However, the underlying structural mechanism related to grain size is still unclear. In the present study, the structural mechanism of grain size effect on piezoelectric performance has been revealed in the prototype Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 system by using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The miniaturization of grain size tends to favor the appearance of higher symmetric tetragonal phase, while a single monoclinic phase is determined in the coarse-grained ceramics. The direct structural evidence reveals that both tetragonal and monoclinic phases in the fine-grained ceramics are less sensitive to the electric field, corresponding to the inferior piezoelectric performance, while the single monoclinic phase in the coarse-grained ceramics is more active to be driven by the electric field, generating good piezoelectric behavior. Both domain switching ability and lattice strain are suppressed with decreasing grain size, which directly leads to the deterioration in piezoelectric performance. In conclusion, the current results will benefit the structural understanding of the size effect of piezoelectric and other related systems.

Relationship among the Crystal Structure, Texture, and Macroscopic Properties of Tetragonal (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O 3 Ferroelectrics Investigated by In Situ High-Energy Synchrotron Diffraction

In situ diffraction investigations have played an important role in experimentally revealing the mechanism of piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. In this study, a pure tetragonal ferroelectric ceramic of La-doped PbZr 0.5 Ti 0.5 O 3 (LaPZT50) was investigated to eliminate the complex influence of phase coexistence. The electric field evolutions of the crystal structure, domain switching, and lattice deformation of the tetragonal phase have been revealed by in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, we found that the crystal structure of LaPZT50 is quite stable, showing a negligible change in the Pb–O bond length, unit cell volume, and spontaneous polarization upon application of an in situ external electric field. Importantly, the maximum macroscopic polarization of tetragonal LaPZT50 is defined by the 111-oriented grains. As determined by the intensity difference, the switching of non-180° domains plays a more significant role in contributing to the macroscopic strain than lattice deformation. These results further imply that the phase coexistence around the morphotropic phase boundary facilitates domain wall motion in the tetragonal phase and improves the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

Structure and good piezoelectric performance in the complex system of Pb[(Zn,Ni)Nb]O 3 –Pb[(In,Yb)Nb]O 3 –Pb(Zr,Hf,Ti)O 3

High-performance piezoelectrics are always demanded for the high-end application. In this study, a complex piezoelectric system of 0.49Pb(Zn 1/2 Ni 1/2 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x Pb(In 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 –(0.51 – x )Pb(Zr 1/2 Hf 1/2 ) 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.23) was fabricated through the solid-state method. The structure, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were investigated. The optimum piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 761 pC/N, high Curie temperature of 169 °C, dielectric permittivity ( ε r ) of 4557, and electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k p ) of 63% were found at the morphotropic phase boundary composition of x = 0.19, which are superior to other complex piezoelectric materials. In particular, a significant large-signal d 33 * of 913 pm/V and low strain hysteresis (6%) was obtained in the temperature range of 20–170 °C. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) has demonstrated that good temperature stability is put down to the structure stability. The agreement between the calculated lattice strain from in situ high-energy synchrotron XRD data and the macroscopic measurements suggests that the large lattice strain has a dominant contribution to the high piezoelectric response. The high piezoelectric performance and good temperature stability makes it potential for application.

Identifying Dense NiSe 2 /CoSe 2 Heterointerfaces Coupled with Surface High-Valence Bimetallic Sites for Synergistically Enhanced Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Constructing heterostructures with abundant interfaces is essential for integrating the multiple functionalities in single entities. Herein, the synthesis of NiSe 2 /CoSe 2 heterostructures with different interfacial densities via an innovative strategy of successive ion injection is reported. The resulting hybrid electrocatalyst with dense heterointerfaces exhibits superior electrocatalytic properties in an alkaline electrolyte, superior to other benchmarks and precious metal catalysts. Advanced synchrotron techniques, post structural characterizations, and density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the introduction of atomic-level interfaces can lower the oxidation overpotential of bimetallic Ni and Co active sites (whereas Ni$^{2+}$ can be more easily activated than Co$^{2+}$) and induce the electronic interaction between the core selenides and surface in situ generated oxides/hydroxides, which play a critical role in synergistically reducing energetic barriers and accelerating reaction kinetics for catalyzing the oxygen evolution. Hence, the heterointerface structure facilitates the catalytic performance enhancement via increasing the intrinsic reactivity of metallic atoms and enhancing the synergistic effect between the inner selenides and surface oxidation species. This work not only complements the understanding on the origins of the activity of electrocatalysts based on metal selenides, but also sheds light on further surface and interfacial engineering of advanced hybrid materials.

Towards oilcane: Engineering hyperaccumulation of triacylglycerol into sugarcane stems

Abstract Metabolic engineering to divert carbon flux from sucrose to oil in high biomass crop like sugarcane is an emerging strategy to boost lipid yields per hectare for biodiesel production. Sugarcane stems comprise more than 70% of the crops' biomass and can accumulate sucrose in excess of 20% of their extracted juice. The energy content of oils in the form of triacylglycerol (TAG) is more than twofold that of carbohydrates. Here, we report a step change in TAG accumulation in sugarcane stem tissues achieving an average of 4.3% of their dry weight (DW) in replicated greenhouse experiments by multigene engineering. The metabolic engineering included constitutive co‐expression of wrinkled1; diacylglycerol acyltransferase1‐2; cysteine‐oleosin; and ribonucleic acid interference‐suppression of sugar‐dependent1. The TAG content in leaf tissue was also elevated by more than 400‐fold compared to non‐engineered sugarcane to an average of 8.0% of the DW and the amount of total fatty acids reached about 13% of the DW. With increasing TAG accumulation an increase of 18:1 unsaturated fatty acids was observed at the expense of 16:0 and 18:0 saturated fatty acids. Total biomass accumulation, soluble lignin, Brix and juice content were significantly reduced in the TAG hyperaccumulating sugarcane lines. Overcoming this yield drag by engineering lipid accumulation into late stem development will be critical to exceed lipid yields of current oilseed crops.

An intriguing intermediate state as a bridge between antiferroelectric and ferroelectric perovskites

The configuration of electric or magnetic dipoles embedded into a crystal lattice gives rise to the defining physical properties of a functional material. The prevailing antiferroelectric materials have so far been allusively assumed to be in a strict antiparallel electric polarization configuration, although they have shown huge potential applications for use in electronic devices. Herein, we have revealed for the first time the complex crystal structure of an intermediate state between the two conventional antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) states in PbZrO 3 -based perovskites by employing a combination of advanced synchrotron X-ray, neutron and three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction techniques. We found that the intermediate state displays an intriguing flexible configuration of a sinusoidal wave functional with imbalanced polarization, different to the commonly believed antiparallel and balanced polarization. Such an intermediate state was concluded to act as a bridge between the conventional AFE and FE states. Our observations offer new insight into the AFE state and its transformation into the FE state. Such an intermediate state with a unique polarization configuration is believed to be a common feature that occurs in high-performance AFE perovskite materials.
