Sound propagation through a real jet flow field with scattering due to interaction with turbulence

The sound propagation through a nonuniform turbulent jet flow field is studied by means of a system of linearized equations governing the acoustic variables. These equations depend on the fluctuating flow-field variables which are prescribed by experimental results. It is shown that the redistribution of the acoustic energy in the far field depends on space-time correlation of the turbulent velocities and on the mean flow variables and their gradients.

Effects of multiple scattering on scintillation of transionospheric radio signals

Recent development in the optical scintillation theory has been adapted to the ionospheric geometry in order to study the ionospheric scintillation phenomenon in the presence of multiple scattering. Under approximations well satisfied in typical ionospheres for a frequency above about 20 MHz, the first through fourth moment equations have been derived and some analytic solutions given. The fourth moment equation has also been solved numerically. The numerical results show clearly the occurrence of focusing and saturation phenomena. The new multiple-scatter effects are emphasized.

Ionospheric irregularities causing scintillation of GHz frequency radio signals

Consideration of the recently observed phenomenon of scintillation of satellite signals at GHz frequency range. Based on the scintillation data and results from in situ measurements, several ionospheric irregularity models with different power spectra are studied. Scintillation index is computed for the various models and compared with observed results. Both magnitude and frequency dependence of the scintillation index are investigated. It is found that a thick irregularity slab of the order of 200 km with an electron density fluctuation of about 20 per cent of its background value and with a nonmonotonic power spectrum may account for the maximum observed values of the scintillation index as well as its frequency dependence. Some future observations and measurements are suggested.

Acoustic-gravity waves in the upper atmosphere

In this paper we review the theory of acoustic-gravity waves, the interaction of such waves with the ionosphere, the experimental support for the existence of such waves in the upper atmosphere, and the role played by acoustic-gravity waves in thermospheric dynamics. After a thorough discussion on the properties of acoustic-gravity waves in an ideal isothermal atmosphere, the effects produced by horizontal winds, sharp boundary discontinuities, and dissipative processes are discussed. The generation of these waves by stationary or moving sources is then treated. It is shown that the atmospheric response to a stationary impulse source can be described by the emission of three waves: acoustic, buoyancy, and gravity. These discussions are then followed by reviewing propagation effects in a realistic atmosphere for both free waves and guided waves. Recent numerical results are given. When acoustic-gravity waves propagate through the ionosphere, interaction between the wave and the ionosphere will take place. The physical processes involved in such an interaction are examined.

Wave propagation and earth satellite radio emission studies

Radio propagation studies of the ionosphere using satellite radio beacons are described. The ionosphere is known as a dispersive, inhomogeneous, irregular and sometimes even nonlinear medium. After traversing through the ionosphere the radio signal bears signatures of these characteristics. A study of these signatures will be helpful in two areas: (1) It will assist in learning the behavior of the medium, in this case the ionosphere. (2) It will provide information of the kind of signal characteristics and statistics to be expected for communication and navigational satellite systems that use the similar geometry.

Propagation of sound through a real jet flowfield

The sound propagation of harmonic disturbances through a real jet flowfield, which contains mean flow gradients in pressure and velocities, has been studied. A finite-difference approximation for the equations which govern the acoustic disturbance is obtained for a subsonic axisymmetric jet in terms of acoustic pressure and acoustic energy flux. Experimental results are used to describe the mean flowfield of a model jet. The equations are solved numerically using a Newton-type iterative scheme. The directivity at various distances from a point source located at two jet diameters downstream of the jet exit on its center line compared qualitatively well with the numerical result of Schubert (1972) and with the experimental result of Grande (1966).

Coherence and its application in the beam-foil light source

The beam-foil light source is shown to be very useful in spectroscopic work. Not only the lifetimes of highly excited, multiply charged atoms can be measured in a straightforward way, but also the fine-structure and hyperfine-structure separations and the Lande factors can be obtained due to the fact that the coherent excitations are created in the impulsive beam-foil collision. The theories suggested to explain the origin of coherence are presently incomplete.

A numerical study of rays in random media

Statistics of electromagnetic rays in a random medium are studied numerically by the Monte Carlo method. Two dimensional random surfaces with prescribed correlation functions are used to simulate the random media. Rays are then traced in these sample media. Statistics of the ray properties such as the ray positions and directions are computed. Histograms showing the distributions of the ray positions and directions at different points along the ray path as well as at given points in space are given. The numerical experiment is repeated for different cases corresponding to weakly and strongly random media with isotropic and anisotropic irregularities. Results are compared with those derived from theoretical investigations whenever possible.

Nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities.

The problem of propagation of finite-amplitude electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities is studied. Using a recently developed perturbation technique, a general equation for finite amplitude coherent waves is derived. Included in this equation are both the effects of quasi-harmonic nonlinear heating of electrons and random scattering by irregularities. The equation is solved in general by the equivalent linearization procedure. The amplitude of the coherent wave is found to be attenuated by collision and scattering. Both attenuation are affected by the nonlinear heating of the electrons. Curves showing the results for a specific example will be presented.

Improved Hanle effect measurement technique for fast ions.

An improved averaging technique for use with foil-excited fast ions is applied to a Hanle-effect measurement of the mean life of some fast ions. With improved data analysis, the employed technique is expected to be more precise, as well as experimentally simpler than previously used techniques.

On coherent oscillations of a string.

Vibrations of an elastic string when the separation between the ends varies randomly are studied. The emphasis is on the evolution of the coherent, or ordered, oscillations of the string. Using a perturbation technique borrowed from quantum field theory and the modified Kryloff-Bogoliuboff method, the 'multiple scattering' effect of the random separation between the ends on the linear and nonlinear coherent oscillations are investigated. It is found that due to the random interactions the coherent fundamental oscillation as well as the harmonies are damped. Their frequencies are also modified.

Propagation and application of waves in the ionosphere.

This review deals with the propagation of waves, especially radio waves in the ionosphere. In the macroscopic electromagnetic theory, the mathematical structure of wave propagation problems depends entirely on the properties of the dielectric operator in a magnetically nonpermeable medium. These properties can be deduced from general discussions of symmetry and considerations of physical principles. When the medium is specifically the ionosphere, various physical phenomena may occur. Because of a large number of parameters, it is desirable to define a parameter space. A point in the parameter space corresponds to a specific plasma. The parameter space is subdivided into regions whose boundaries correspond to conditions of resonance and cutoff. As the point crosses these boundaries, the refractive index surface transforms continuously.

Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a turbulent plasma slab.

Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a turbulent plasma slab is studied. Part of the effects of the multiple scattering is taken into account. The reflection coefficient is found to be increased and its variation with respect to the slab thickness is smoothed out by the random scattering.

Hanle-effect mean-life measurements on aligned fast ions.

Mean lives of several levels of the first two ionized states of argon were obtained by Hanle-effect measurements on the fast-beam particles, following coherent alignment of the magnetic substates by beam-foil interaction. The g factors of the levels were obtained by observation of quantum beats. Mean lives are compared with results of the usual beam-foil mean-life measurement technique. We show that the Hanle effect can sometimes clarify beam-foil results.

Generation of random hypersurfaces.

A technique to generate multidimensional random hypersurfaces with given statistical properties numerically on a digital computer is discussed in this paper. The technique is based on the linear filter theory. Using this technique, two-dimensional random surfaces are generated to illustrate the procedure. Statistics of these two-dimensional random surfaces are presented. Possible applications of these random surfaces in various physical problems are discussed.
