A two-dimensional near-infrared tracking system

Video tracking systems face the problem of discriminating between a target in space and the earth in the background. The visual tracking system described in this paper uses the near-infrared to take advantage of differences in spectral reflectance between the target and the earth in the background to enhance amplitude differences, simplifying the detection process. The real-time visual tracking system is microprocessor controlled, light weight, and low-power.

Variable-resolution facsimile system

Variable-element scanner in facsimile transmission system allows adjustment of resolution as dictated by document requirement. Device reduces transmission time when high resolution is not needed.

Variable-clock-rate A/D converter

Analog-to-digital (A/D) converter operates at two different rates (slow and fast) so that low amplitude noise is reduced without loss of transient response. During tracking, when sensitivity is important, slow clock reduces noise. In search mode, when signal may change rapidly, fast clock ensures rapid response.

Video scrambler/descrambler

Video scrambler that operates on baseband signals uses relatively simple delay and inversion circuitry to alter television signal so that is is unrecognizable when picked up on TV monitor. Descrambler that uses essentially same circuit restores signal and allows original video information to be retrieved. Circuits allow only authorized parties to have access to transmitted information.

Shuttle Orbiter Uplink Text and Graphics System

This paper presents the definition of requirements for and current design of the Shuttle Orbiter Uplink Text and Graphics System (UT&GS). Beginning in early 1981, the UT&GS will support Shuttle flights by providing the capability of transmitting single-frame imagery from the ground to the orbiting Shuttle vehicle. Such imagery is in the form of maps, text, diagrams, or photographs, and is outputted on the Orbiter as a paper hard copy. Four modes of operation will be provided to minimize the time required to transmit less than full-resolution imagery. This paper discusses the considerations and complications leading to the four modes and associated resolution requirements. The paper also presents the design of the CCD array ground scanner and airborne CRT hardcopier.

System for producing chroma signals

A method for obtaining electronic chroma signals with a single scanning-type image device is described. A color multiplexed light signal is produced using an arrangement of dichroic filter stripes. In the particular system described, a two layer filter is used to color modulate external light which is then detected by an image pickup tube. The resulting time division multiplexed electronic signal from the pickup tube is converted by a decoder into a green color signal, and a single red-blue multiplexed signal, which is demultiplexed to produce red and blue color signals. The three primary color signals can be encoded as standard NTSC color signals.

Unichromatic-carrier color-TV system

Optical system consists of two filter layers with each layer composed of transparent stripes alternating with dichroic color filter strips. System produces color multiplexed light signal by vertically orienting dichroic filter stripes perpendicular to scan lines of image tube.

Data storage, image tube type

Method and apparatus for the storage of digital or analog electrical signals are provided by a memory storage system employing a conventional vidicon tube. At the beginning of an operating cycle, the vidicon is conditioned to accept electrical data input by exposing its photosensitive target to a short, high intensity light flash. A first electron beam scan of the photosensitive surface then sets up a charge pattern on the photosensitive target. A second electron beam scan of the photosensitive surface by an unmodulated electron beam then develops an output signal across an output resistor by using capacitive currents. The conditioning and scanning steps are operated repetitively at high speed using conventional television camera scan, sync, and power supply circuitry to provide a low cost data storage system.

Wein bridge oscillator circuit

Circuit with minimum number of components provides stable outputs of 2 to 8 volts at frequencies of .001 to 100 kHz. Oscillator exhibits low power consumption, portability, simplicity, and drive capability, it has application as loudspeaker tester and audible alarm, as well as in laboratory and test generators.

Burst synchronization detection system

System uses digital logic and a voltage-controlled oscillator to obtain appropriate horizontal and vertical sync signals from the sync bursts contained in the original transmitted signal. It is useful in systems that exhibit considerable single amplitude fluctuation.

System converts slow-scan to standard fast-scan TV signals

Signal conversion system converts slow-scan video signals into standard fast-scan television signals that are required for reproduction of television pictures on American TV sets. This system permits conversion of TV pictures produced in accordance with the standards of one country into the standards of another country.
