On the detection of differentially encoded polyphase signals.

Discussion of the transmission and detection of differentially encoded polyphase signals and of the ambiguity resolution problem which results from suppression of the transmitted carrier. In particular, an analysis is made of the performance of differentially encoded coherent multiple phase-shift keyed (MPSK) systems which reconstruct coherent reference signals by means of generalized Costas or nth-power loops. The performance of such systems is then compared with that of ideal reception of MPSK signals and differentially coherent detection of differentially encoded MPSK signals. Emphasis is placed upon the special cases of quadriphase and octaphase signaling.

L-orthogonal signal transmission and detection.

Investigation of the detailed capabilities and performance characterization of systems that employ L-orthogonal signaling techniques. L-orthogonal signals represent a unified set of signals wherein the polyphase and orthogonal (bi-orthogonal) signal sets are included as special cases. This fact is important, since orthogonal (bi-orthogonal) and polyphase signaling sets represent opposing forces as far as tradeoffs between error probability, energy-to-noise ratio, and bandwidth requirements are concerned. Bounds on the performance of the optimum receiver and the performance of various suboptimum (practical) receiver structures are given. Coherent and differentially coherent detection of differentially encoded signals are also pursued. Various comparisons and tradeoffs are made by means of numerical evaluation of the error probability expressions.

Two-way coherent tracking systems.

Review of some results pertinent to the development of nonlinear theory on two-way coherent tracking systems. In particular, the model of cascaded systems is presented, and approximations to steady state probability density functions of the two-way system phase and Doppler error are developed. From these, certain numerical results required in the design and planning of these systems are derived.

Block-coded communications

Theory for block-coded telemetry systems is useful in testing performance of one- and two-way, phase-coherent telemetry systems when double-conversion, superheterodyne, phase-locked receiver, preceded by bandpass limiter is used to track carrier.
