SPS pilot signal design and power transponder analysis, volume 2, phase 3

The problem of pilot signal parameter optimization and the related problem of power transponder performance analysis for the Solar Power Satellite reference phase control system are addressed. Signal and interference models were established to enable specifications of the front end filters including both the notch filter and the antenna frequency response. A simulation program package was developed to be included in SOLARSIM to perform tradeoffs of system parameters based on minimizing the phase error for the pilot phase extraction. An analytical model that characterizes the overall power transponder operation was developed. From this model, the effects of different phase noise disturbance sources that contribute to phase variations at the output of the power transponders were studied and quantified. Results indicate that it is feasible to hold the antenna array phase error to less than one degree per power module for the type of disturbances modeled.

Shuttle/TDRSS modelling and link simulation study

A Shuttle/TDRSS S-band and Ku-band link simulation package called LinCsim was developed for the evaluation of link performance for specific Shuttle signal designs. The link models were described in detail and the transmitter distortion parameters or user constraints were carefully defined. The overall link degradation (excluding hardware degradations) relative to an ideal BPSK channel were given for various sets of user constraint values. The performance sensitivity to each individual user constraint was then illustrated. The effect of excessive Spacelab clock jitter on the return link BER performance was also investigated as was the problem of subcarrier recovery for the K-band Shuttle return link signal.

SPS phase control system performance via analytical simulation

A solar power satellite transmission system which incorporates automatic beam forming, steering, and phase control is discussed. The phase control concept centers around the notation of an active retrodirective phased array as a means of pointing the beam to the appropriate spot on Earth. The transmitting antenna (spacetenna) directs the high power beam so that it focuses on the ground-based receiving antenna (rectenna). A combination of analysis and computerized simulation was conducted to determine the far field performance of the reference distribution system, and the beam forming and microwave power generating systems.

Time and frequency transfer by the Master-Slave Returnable Timing System technique - Application to solar power transmission

The concept of the Master Slave Returnable Timing System (MSRTS) is presented which combines the advantages of the master slave (MS) and the Returnable Timing System (RTS) for time and frequency transfer. The basic idea of MSRTS is to send the time-frequency signal received at a particular node back to the sending node. The delay accumulated by this return signal is used to advance the phase of the master (sending) node thereby canceling the effect of the delay introduced by the path. The method can be used in highly accurate clock distribution systems required in avionics, computer communications, and large retrodirective phased arrays such as the Solar Power Satellite.

False lock performance of Shuttle Costas loop receivers

The false (sideband) lock problem in Shuttle Costas loop receivers, in the presence of noise, is assessed. False lock margin is defined depending on symbol signal-to-noise ratio rather than in the absence of noise. Closed-form results are given for the case where the arm filters of the Costas loop are one-pole Butterworth filters as used in the Shuttle receivers. However, the approach taken is also general enough to cover filters of arbitrary characteristics. As part of the development of the false lock margin, it is shown that the false lock phenomenon of the squaring loop is identical to that of the Costas loop.

TDRSS performance evaluation for Shuttle services using analytical simulation

A recently developed analytical simulation package makes it possible to obtain an analytical verification of data transmission performance through Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) satellites. The development of this simulation package has required performing an analytical evaluation of several key communication features of the TDRSS services in order to ensure the consistency of TDRSS and Shuttle user spacecraft transponder performance specifications. Analytical models of the Shuttle transponder, TDRS, TDRSS ground terminal, and link dynamics have been developed for the forward and return links. The models used for the signals and the transmission path are discussed, giving attention to the general set-up of the program and the analytical approach used. Some of the results obtained by using the program are also considered.

Analysis of squaring circuit mechanizations in Costas and squaring loops

The paper discusses implementations of the carrier recovery loop for suppressed carrier binary phase shift keyed signals. The tracking performance of a practical squaring loop where the times-two multiplier is mechanized as a limiter/multiplier combination is developed. This produces the absolute value of the arriving signal which is practical in terms of low signal-to-noise ratios, a wide dynamic range of signal level, and temperature variations. The approach is compared to the usual squaring loop whose squaring circuit is the times-two multiplier exhibiting a square law characteristic.

Shuttle Ku-band signal design study

Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed.

Automatic phase control in solar power satellite systems

Various approaches to the problem of generating, maintaining and distributing a coherent, reference phase signal over a large area are suggested, mathematically modeled and analyzed with respect to their ability to minimize: phase build-up, beam diffusion and beam steering phase jitter, cable length, and maximize power transfer efficiency. In addition, phase control configurations are suggested which alleviate the need for layout symmetry.

Ku-band antenna acquisition and tracking performance study, volume 4

The results pertaining to the tradeoff analysis and performance of the Ku-band shuttle antenna pointing and signal acquisition system are presented. The square, hexagonal and spiral antenna trajectories were investigated assuming the TDRS postulated uncertainty region and a flexible statistical model for the location of the TDRS within the uncertainty volume. The scanning trajectories, shuttle/TDRS signal parameters and dynamics, and three signal acquisition algorithms were integrated into a hardware simulation. The hardware simulation is quite flexible in that it allows for the evaluation of signal acquisition performance for an arbitrary (programmable) antenna pattern, a large range of C/N sub O's, various TDRS/shuttle a priori uncertainty distributions, and three distinct signal search algorithms.

Optimum design and performance of Costas receivers containing soft bandpass limiters

This paper investigates several key questions concerning the mechanization and design of a Costas receiver for reconstruction of a carrier from a suppressed carrier signal. For baseband NRZ encoded data symbols and a soft bandpass limiter preceding the loop, several design issues which are considered herein and which affect acquisition and tracking performance are: (1) The choice of an IF bandwidth. (2) The optimum choice of the Costas arm filter bandwidths as well as the spectral roll-off characteristics. (3) The optimum choice of loop bandwidth to data rate ratio for a given signal-to-noise ratio. (4) The signal suppression factor and the combined limiter-squaring loss. (5) The variations in loop bandwidth and damping with signal level. (6) The choice of the limiter transfer characteristic. (7) Performance degradation due to the presence of a limiter. Various new results in system design are presented and typical numerical results are given and graphically demonstrated in SNR regions of practical interest. The theory is applicable to the design of carrier reconstruction loops required in the implementation of spread spectrum communication receivers.

Tracking performance of symbol synchronizers for Manchester coded data

The implementation and tracking performance of symbol synchronizers for Manchester coded data is presented with motivation provided by maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation theory. Certain physically relizable closed-loop structures, readily implemented in practice, are suggested by the theory for uncoded data symbols with arbitrary data transition probabilities. The tracking performance of these loops is optimized and comparisons are made among the various configurations over a wide range of system parameters. Although not the major intent of the paper, the acquisition problem is briefly addressed.
