Highly Bright and Photostable Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials Assembled from Sequence-Defined Peptoids

Free-standing two-dimensional (2D) organic nanomaterials are highly attractive for biological applications because of their unique structural properties and high biocompatibility. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new class of highly bright and photostable membrane-mimetic 2D nanosheets from sequence-defined peptoids. These nanosheets exhibited the high quantum yield and photostability as a result of the precise placement and ordering of dansyl dye molecules within crystalline nanosheets. We further showed the use of these nanosheets as biocompatible and programmable probes for live cell imaging and cell labeling. Furthermore, by programing these nanosheets with different surface charges, we achieved the enhanced lysosome escape of these nanosheets, showing their great potential as nanocarriers for the efficient intracellular delivery of macromolecular drugs.

An Ion-Imprinting Derived Strategy to Synthesize Single-Atom Iron Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction

Carbon-based single-atom catalysts (CSACs) have recently received extensive attention in catalysis research. However, the preparation process of CSACs involves a high-temperature treatment, during which metal atoms are mobile and aggregated into nanoparticles, detrimental to the catalytic performance. Herein, an ion-imprinting derived strategy is proposed to synthesize CSACs, in which isolated metal-nitrogen-carbon (Me-N 4 -C x ) moiety covalently binds oxygen atoms in Si-based molecular sieve frameworks. Such a feature makes Me-N 4 -C x moiety well protected/confined during the heat treatment, resulting in the final material enriched with single-atom metal active sites. As a proof of concept, a single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst is synthesized by using this ion-imprinting derived strategy. Finally, experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate high concentration of single FeN 4 active sites distributed in this catalyst, resulting in an outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.908 V in alkaline media.

Single-Atom Nanozymes Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Sensitive Detection of A β 1-40: A Biomarker of Alzheimer’s Disease

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) possess unique features of maximum atomic utilization and present highly assembled enzyme-like structure and remarkable enzyme-like activity. By introducing SANs into immunoassay, limitations of ELISA such as low stability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) can be well addressed, thereby improving the performance of the immunoassays. In this work, we have developed novel Fe-N-C single-atom nanozymes (Fe-N x SANs) derived from Fe-doped polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube and substituted the enzymes in ELISA kit for enhancing the detection sensitivity of amyloid beta 1-40. Results indicate that the Fe-N x SANs contain high density of single-atom active sites and comparable enzyme-like properties as HRP, owing to the maximized utilization of Fe atoms and their abundant active sites, which could mimic natural metalloproteases structures. Further designed SAN-linked immunosorbent assay (SAN-LISA) demonstrates the ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 0.88 pg/mL, much more sensitive than that of commercial ELISA (9.98 pg/mL). The results confirm that the Fe-N x SANs can serve as a satisfactory replacement of enzyme labels, which show great potential as an ultrasensitive colorimetric immunoassay.

Peptoid-Based Programmable 2D Nanomaterial Sensor for Selective and Sensitive Detection of H 2 S in Live Cells

During the past decades, a variety of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have been developed through supramolecular self-assembly. Among them, those assembled from sequence-defined molecules have received particularly attention because they enable a precise displaying of functional groups, including fluorescent dyes, within nanosheet surfaces. On the other hand, due to the fluorescence self-quenching, synthesis of organic 2D nanosheets exhibiting high fluorescence quantum yields is a significant challenge. Herein, we report the utilization of H 2 S-responsive probes as peptoid sidechains to design and synthesize crystalline 2D nanomembranes (2DNMs) as selective and sensitive H 2 S sensors. These 2DNM sensors exhibit a high quantum yield as a result of high crystallinity and tunable probe density. Compared with amorphous state of peptoid assembly and pre-assembled peptoid-probe conjugates, these crystalline 2DNM sensors exhibit a significantly strong fluorescence intensity and a high sensitivity (~ 0.36 nM). By sonication-cutting these 2DNM sensors into a colloidal form in aqueous solution, we further demonstrated the use of colloidal 2DNMs for detecting both exogenous and endogenous H 2 S inside cells or targeted cell organelles. As far as we know, this is the first example of using sequence-defined 2D nanomaterials for selective and sensitive detection of H 2 S. Because peptoids are biocompatible and peptoid-based 2DNMs are highly programmable, we expect that this new class of 2DNM sensors offer great potentials for detecting H 2 S and for biological applications.

Controlling Surface Phase Transition and Chemical Reactivity of O3-Layered Metal Oxide Cathodes for High-Performance Na-Ion Batteries

O3-layered metal oxides are promising cathode materials for high-energy Na-ion batteries (SIBs); however, they suffer from fast capacity fade. In this work, we develop a high-performance O3-NaNi 0.68 Mn 0.22 Co 0.10 O 2 cathode for SIBs toward practical applications by suppressing the formation of a rock salt layer at the cathode surface with an advanced electrolyte. The cathode can deliver a high specific capacity of ~196 mAh g –1 and demonstrates >80% capacity retention over 1000 cycles. NaNi 0.68 Mn 0.22 Co 0.10 O 2 –hard carbon full-cells with practical loading (>2.5 mAh cm –2 ) and lean electrolyte (~40 μL) demonstrate ~82% capacity retention after 450 cycles. A 60 mAh single-layer pouch cell has also been fabricated and demonstrated stable performance. This work represents a significant leap in SIB development and brings new insights to the development of advanced layered metal oxide cathodes for alkaline-ion batteries.

Highly quaternized polystyrene ionomers for high performance anion exchange membrane water electrolysers

Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers to produce hydrogen from water remain at an early stage of development, and their performance is far lower than that of systems based on proton exchange membranes. Here, we report an ammonium-enriched anion exchange ionomer that improves the performance of an AEM electrolyser to levels approaching that of state-of-the-art proton exchange membrane electrolysers. Using rotating-disk electrode experiments, we show that a high pH (>13) in the electrode binder is the critical factor for improving the activity of the hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution reactions in AEM electrolysers. Based on this observation, we prepared and tested several quaternized polystyrene electrode binders in an AEM electrolyser. Using the binder with the highest ionic concentration and a NiFe oxygen evolution catalyst, we demonstrated performance of 2.7 A cm -2 at 1.8 V without a corrosive circulating alkaline solution. The limited durability of the AEM electrolyser remains a challenge to be addressed in the future.

2D Single-Atom Catalyst with Optimized Iron Sites Produced by Thermal Melting of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) derivatives have recently been demonstrated as one of the most ideal precursors to prepare single-atom metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, abundant single-atom metal sites are buried in the derived carbon nanoparticles, rendering them useless for ORR. In this work, a novel ZIF-8 "thermal melting" strategy is proposed to prepare a high specific surface area of Fe-N-doped graphene nanosheets (Fe-N/GNs) with single-atom Fe-sites on the surface which are accessible to electrolytes, optimizing their utilization and improving ORR activity. As a result, the Fe-N/GNs material exhibits excellent ORR activity with half-wave potentials of 0.903 V in alkaline media and 0.837 V in acidic media, which are comparable to commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Stabilizing Single-Atom Iron Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction via Ceria Confining and Trapping

Atomically dispersed Fe-N-C materials recently hold great interest in costly Pt substitution for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of fuel cells. However, the heat treatment involved in the materials preparation excites Fe aggregating into low activity of nanosized species rather than high activity of single-atom Fe sites. Herein we proposed a new "ceria-assisted" strategy to preferentially generate the active single-atom Fe sites in Fe-N-C materials, which involves oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ adsorption, and subsequent heat treatment. Owing to its spatial confinement and strong trapping for Fe atoms, ceria can effectively suppress agglomeration of isolated Fe atoms and stabilize the Fe atoms by bonding to O in the lattice during the heat treatment, leading to a high content of atomically dispersed Fe (4.6 wt.%). Accordingly, the final catalyst showed ultrahigh ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.915 V and kinetic current density of 7.15 mA cm -2 at 0.9 V. When it was as assembled an anion exchange membrane fuel cell, a large maximum power density of 496 mW cm -2 was achieved.
