Non-linear dynamic compensation system

A non-linear dynamic compensation subsystem is added in the feedback loop of a high precision optical mirror positioning control system to smoothly alter the control system response bandwidth from a relatively wide response bandwidth optimized for speed of control system response to a bandwidth sufficiently narrow to reduce position errors resulting from the quantization noise inherent in the inductosyn used to measure mirror position. The non-linear dynamic compensation system includes a limiter for limiting the error signal within preselected limits, a compensator for modifying the limiter output to achieve the reduced bandwidth response, and an adder for combining the modified error signal with the difference between the limited and unlimited error signals. The adder output is applied to control system motor so that the system response is optimized for accuracy when the error signal is within the preselected limits, optimized for speed of response when the error signal is substantially beyond the preselected limits and smoothly varied therebetween as the error signal approaches the preselected limits.

Nonlinear Dynamic Compensation For Feedback Control

Nonlinear dynamic compensation scheme enhances stability of feedback control system in which feedback signal includes quantization noise. Compensator slows response of control system at low error signals to diminish effect of quantization noise but provides faster response at large error signals to speed correction of large errors.

Aiming Instruments On The Space Station

Report discusses capabilities and requirements for aiming scientific instruments carried aboard proposed Space Station. Addresses two issues: whether system envisioned for pointing instruments at celestial targets offers sufficiently low jitter, high accuracy, and high stability to meet scientific requirements; whether it can do so even in presence of many vibrations and other disturbances on Space Station. Salient conclusion of study, recommendation to develop pointing-actuator system including mechanical/fluid base isolator underneath reactionaless gimbal subsystem. This kind of system offers greatest promise of high performance, cost-effectiveness, and modularity for job at hand.

A precision pointing system for space telescope class optical trackers

This paper reports on the results of a study effort whose main objective was to develop a conceptual design for a space based, large-payload (3000 kg) pointing system capable of both rapid slew maneuvers (0.35 rad/sec-squared) and very stable tracking (1 microrad, 1 sigma, each axis). The key features of the resulting solution are: (1) cross elevation over elevation gimbal system, (2) closed cross elevation gimbal ring, (3) graphite-epoxy structure, (4) two-motor reactionless joint torquers, (5) payload mounted vernier reaction wheel, and (6) gyrostabilized model following control system.

Decentralized model reference adaptive control of large flexible structures

A decentralized model reference adaptive control (DMRAC) method is developed for large flexible structures (LFS). The development follows that of a centralized model reference adaptive control for LFS that have been shown to be feasible. The proposed method is illustrated using a simply supported beam with collocated actuators and sensors. Results show that the DMRAC can achieve either output regulation or output tracking with adequate convergence, provided the reference model inputs and their time derivatives are integrable, bounded, and approach zero as t approaches infinity.

Control and Simulation of Space-Station Vibrations

Adaptive control system reduces effects of model uncertainties. Report outlines method for finite-element dynamic analysis of space station. Purpose is to determine periods and modes of oscillation of structure and to analyze effect of proposed adaptive control system to damp out unwanted vibrations. With simplifications proposed, finite-element simulations performed during dynamic event, like docking of Space Shuttle, and used to control vibration-damping actuators.
