Strain Programming of Oxygen Octahedral Symmetry in Perovskite Oxide Thin Films

The collective rotations of oxygen octahedra play an important role in determining the physical properties of functional perovskite oxides. The epitaxial strain can serve as an effective means to modify the oxygen octahedral symmetry (OOS), i.e., oxygen octahedral rotation or tilt (OOR/OOT). However, the strain-OOS coupling that may alter the details of the OOS, thereby the physical properties, has not been fully understood. In this work, it is demonstrated that epitaxial strain can not only induce a structural phase transition but also precisely tune the degree of OOR. The correlated metal CaNbO 3 , which is orthorhombic, is studied by growing as epitaxial thin films. By imposing epitaxial strain, it is found that the film undergoes a structural phase transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal upon fully straining (i.e., from a + b − b − to a 0 a 0 c − ). In unstrained films, the octahedral rotation along the c-axis is as large as 15.7° that can be tuned to 6.6° by strain. This finding offers a general approach to manipulating OOR/OOT via strain engineering in complex oxide heterostructures.

Metal-to-insulator transition in oxide semimetals by anion doping

Dirac semimetals exhibiting nontrivial topological characteristics stand as exemplary parent compounds, offering great promise for the realization of novel electronic states. These materials also serve as a versatile platform for systematically investigating topological quantum phase transitions. In this study, we present compelling evidence of profound structural and transport phase shifts in a recently uncovered oxide Dirac semimetal, SrNbO3, achieved through effective in situ anion doping. Notably, a remarkable increase in resistivity of more than three orders of magnitude at room temperature is observed upon nitrogen-doping. The extent of electronic modulation in SrNbO3 is strongly correlated with the misfit strain, underscoring its phase instability to both chemical doping and crystallographic symmetry variations. Using first-principles calculations, we discern that elevating the level of nitrogen doping induces an upward shift in the conductive bands of SrNbO3-?N?. Consequently, a transition from a metallic state to an insulating state becomes apparent as the nitrogen concentration reaches a threshold of 1/3. This investigation sheds light on the potential of anion engineering in oxide Dirac semimetals, offering pathways for manipulating their physical properties. These insights hold promise for future applications that harness these materials for tailored functionalities.

HVAC control fine-grained occupancy pattern estimation

A thermal state of a plurality of zones of the building is updated according to a building thermal model and information received from temperature sensors of the building. Predicted occupant counts for an upcoming plurality of time slots for each of the plurality of zones are updated using actual occupancy counts for each of the plurality of zones. A misprediction type distribution for the upcoming plurality of time slots for each of the plurality of zones is updated, the misprediction type distribution indicating misprediction for true negatives, false positives, false negatives, and true positives. A total misprediction cost expectation is updated according to the predicted occupant counts and the misprediction type distribution. HVAC power for each of the plurality of zones is determined to optimize occupant thermal comfort weighted according to the predicted occupant counts while minimizing the total misprediction cost expectation. HVAC operation is controlled per the HVAC power.
