Post impact compressive behavior of composites

In this paper, the post impact compressive behavior of polymeric composites is studied both analytically and experimentally. In the analytical study, a closed-form solution is obtained for postbuckling of composites with a circular delamination. Using this solution, the reduced stiffness of the impact damaged region is calculated and the residual compressive strengths of quasi-isotropic laminates are predicted as a function of damage size. In the experimental study, in-plane displacements near the damaged region are determined by employing a micro moire interferometry technique. The strain concentrations as well as the compression-after-impact strength have been measured and compared with analytical predictions. Good agreement between the predicted results and experimental data was observed.

Developments in impact damage modeling for laminated composite structures

Damage tolerance is the most critical technical issue for composite fuselage structures studied in the Advanced Technology Composite Aircraft Structures (ATCAS) program. The objective here is to understand both the impact damage resistance and residual strength of the laminated composite fuselage structure. An understanding of the different damage mechanisms which occur during an impact event will support the selection of materials and structural configurations used in different fuselage quadrants and guide the development of analysis tools for predicting the residual strength of impacted laminates. Prediction of the damage state along with the knowledge of post-impact response to applied loads will allow for engineered stacking sequencies and structural configurations; intelligent decisions on repair requirements will also result.

Thermo-viscoelastic analysis of composite materials

The thermo-viscoelastic boundary value problem for anisotropic materials is formulated and a numerical procedure is developed for the efficient analysis of stress and deformation histories in composites. The procedure is based on the finite element method and therefore it is applicable to composite laminates containing geometric discontinuities and complicated boundary conditions. Using the present formulation, the time-dependent stress and strain distributions in both notched and unnotched graphite/epoxy composites have been obtained. The effect of temperature and ply orientation on the creep and relaxation response is also studied.

Analysis of creep and relaxation in composite laminates with holes

The time-dependent behavior of composite laminates subjected to mechanical loads is studied using linear viscoelastic theory. Three-dimensional finite elements are formulated to solve the integral equilibrium equations. Analyses of creep and stress relaxation in composites with holes are performed. Results indicate that the relaxation of interlaminar stresses depends on temperature and layups, and that the creep response of strains is affected by stress redistribution between plies.
