Generalized Smagorinsky model for anisotropic grids

The paper revises the Smagorinsky subgrid model to properly account for grid anisotropy on the basis of energy equilibrium considerations in isotropic turbulence. For moderate resolution anisotropies, Deardorff's (1970) estimate involving an equivalent grid scale Delta(eq) = (Delta1 Delta2 Delta3) exp 1/3 is given a rigorous basis. It is argued that the results obtained should be used in conjunction with the dynamic model of Germano et al. (1991) whenever the anisotropy of the test filter differs significantly from that of the basic grid.

Retrieval of wind temperature and pressure from single Doppler radar and a numerical model

A 4D data assimilation algorithm to obtain 3D wind and thermodynamic fields from radial velocities and a numerical model is derived. It is a blend of the continuous updating technique of Charney et al. (1969) and a diagnostic pressure and temperature retrieval technique suggested by Gal-Chen (1978). This model is tested only against model-generated data which are viewed as 'data observed from a real atmosphere'. A thermal bubble developing in a dry, neutral environment is simulated. The thermal recovery technique is found to be a necessary procedure to obtain successful data assimilation results. The present assimilation method is found to be capable of reducing the 'observational error' and making the assimilation run converge toward the control run. Without data insertion, errors in the nonobserved wind component are large.

The length scale for sub-grid-scale parameterization with anisotropic resolution

Use of the Smagorinsky eddy-viscosity formulation and related schemes for subgrid-scale parameterization of large eddy simulation models requires specification of a single length scale, earlier related by Lilly to the scale of filtering and/or numerical resolution. An anisotropic integration of the Kolmogoroff enstrophy spectrum allows generalization of that relationship to anisotropic resolution. It is found that the Deardorff assumption is reasonably accurate for small anisotropies and can be simply improved for larger values.

Cirrus outflow dynamics

In the present analyses of cirrus clouds' deep-convection outflow plumes as dynamically and thermodynamically active systems, the initial outflow is considered as an analog to wake collapse: after a neutrally-buoyant flow intrusion is flattened and stretched by its stratified environment, the initially isotropic turbulence within it is converted to other forms. Dugan et al.'s (1976) analytic and numerical calculations are used to predict the early spread of the outflow. Strong radiative heat flux curvature then leads to maintenance or regeneration of buoyant turbulence in the collapsed outflow plume. The rise of narrow plumes is sufficiently rapid that their mean temperature does not significantly differ from that of their environment.
