Directing CO 2 electroreduction pathways for selective C 2 product formation using single-site doped copper catalysts

Manipulating the selectivity-determining step in post-C–C coupling is crucial for enhancing C 2 product specificity during electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction, complementing efforts to boost rate-determining step kinetics. Here we highlight the role of single-site noble metal dopants on Cu surfaces in influencing C–O bond dissociation in an oxygen-bound selectivity-determining intermediate, steering post-C–C coupling toward ethylene versus ethanol. Integrating theoretical and experimental analyses, we demonstrate that the oxygen binding strength of the Cu surface controls the favorability of C–O bond scission, thus tuning the selectivity ratio of ethylene-to-ethanol. The Rh-doped Cu catalyst with optimal oxygen binding energy achieves a Faradaic efficiency toward ethylene of 61.2% and an ethylene-to-ethanol Faradaic efficiency ratio of 4.51 at –0.66 V versus RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode). Integrating control of both rate-determining and selectivity-determining steps further raises ethylene Faradaic efficiency to 68.8% at 1.47 A cm -2 in a tandem electrode. Our insights guide the rational design of Cu-based catalysts for selective CO 2 electroreduction to a single C 2 product.

The Conventional Gas Diffusion Electrode May Not Be Resistant to Flooding during CO 2 /CO Reduction

The electrochemical CO 2 or CO reduction to chemicals and fuels using renewable energy is a promising way to reduce anthropogenic carbon emissions. The gas diffusion electrode (GDE) design enables low-carbon manufacturing of target products at a current density (e.g., 500 mA cm –2 ) relevant to industrial requirements. However, the long-term stability of the GDE is restricted by poor water management and flooding, resulting in a significant hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) within almost an hour. The optimization of water management in the GDE demands a thorough understanding of the role of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the catalyst layer (CL) distinctively. In this work, the hydrophobicity of the GDL and CL is independently adjusted to investigate their influence on gas transport efficiency and water management. The gas transport efficiency is more enhanced with the increase in hydrophobicity of the GDL than the CL. Direct visualization of water distribution by optical microscope and micro-computed tomography demonstrates that the water flow pattern transfers from the stable displacement to capillary fingering as GDL hydrophobicity increases. Unfortunately, only increasing the hydrophobicity is not sufficient to prevent flooding. A revolutionary change in the design of the GDE structure is essential to maintain the long-term stability of CO 2 /CO reduction.

Grain Boundary‐Derived Cu + /Cu 0 Interfaces in CuO Nanosheets for Low Overpotential Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction to Ethylene

Abstract Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction can be used to produce value‐added hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals by coupling with clean electrical energy. However, highly active, selective, and energy‐efficient CO 2 conversion to multicarbon hydrocarbons, such as C 2 H 4 , remains challenging because of the lack of efficient catalysts. Herein, an ultrasonication‐assisted electrodeposition strategy to synthesize CuO nanosheets for low‐overpotential CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 H 4 is reported. A high C 2 H 4 Faradaic efficiency of 62.5% is achieved over the CuO nanosheets at a small potential of −0.52 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding to a record high half‐cell cathodic energy efficiency of 41%. The selectivity toward C 2 H 4 is maintained for over 60 h of continuous operation. The CuO nanosheets are prone to in situ restructuring during CO 2 reduction, forming abundant grain boundaries (GBs). Stable Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces are derived from the low‐coordinated Cu atoms in the reconstructed GB regions and act as highly active sites for CO 2 reduction at low overpotentials. In situ Raman spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory computation reveal that the Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces offer high *CO surface coverage and lower the activation energy barrier for *CO dimerization, which, in synergy, facilitates CO 2 reduction to C 2 H 4 at low overpotentials.

Highly selective and productive reduction of carbon dioxide to multicarbon products via in situ CO management using segmented tandem electrodes

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction provides a promising route to the sustainable generation of valuable chemicals and fuels. Tandem catalysts enable sequential CO 2 -to-CO and CO-to-multicarbon (C 2+ ) product conversions on complementary active sites, to produce high C 2+ Faradaic efficiency (FE). Unfortunately, previous tandem catalysts exhibit poor management of CO intermediates, which diminishes C 2+ FE. Here, we design segmented gas-diffusion electrodes (s-GDEs) in which a CO-selective catalyst layer (CL) segment at the inlet prolongs CO residence time in the subsequent C 2+ -selective segment, enhancing conversion. This phenomenon enables increases in both the CO utilization and C 2+ current density for a Cu/Ag s-GDE compared to pure Cu, by increasing the *CO coverage within the Cu CL. Lastly, we develop a Cu/Fe-N-C s-GDE with 90% C 2+ FE at C 2+ partial current density (j C2+ ) exceeding 1 A cm -2 . These results prove the importance of transport and establish design principles to improve C 2+ FE and j C2+ in tandem CO 2 reduction.

Planar defect-driven electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion

The selectivity towards a specific C 2+ product, such as ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), is sensitive to the surface structure of copper (Cu) catalysts in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) electro-reduction. The fundamental understanding of such sensitivity can guide the development of advanced electrocatalysts, although it remains challenging at the atomic level. In this work, we demonstrated that planar defects, such as stacking faults, could drive the electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion with higher selectivity and productivity than Cu(100) facets in the intermediate potential region (–0.50 ~ –0.65 V vs. RHE). The unique right bipyramidal Cu nanocrystals containing a combination of (100) facets and a set of parallel planar defects delivered 67% faradaic efficiency (FE) for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 217 mA cm –2 at –0.63 V vs. RHE. In contrast, Cu nanocubes with exclusive (100) facets exhibited only 46% FE for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 87 mA cm –2 at an identical potential. Both ex situ CO temperature-programmed desorption and in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis implied that the stronger *CO adsorption on planar defect sites facilitates CO generation kinetics, which contributes to a higher surface coverage of *CO and in turn an enhanced reaction rate of C–C coupling towards C 2+ products, especially C 2 H 4 .
