Coupling of multiscale imaging analysis and computational modeling for understanding thick cathode degradation mechanisms

Here, using a thick NMC811 (LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 ) electrode as an example, we present a macro- to nanoscale 2D and 3D imaging analysis approach coupled with 4D (space + time) computational modeling to probe its degradation mechanism in a lithium-ion battery cell. Particle cracking increases and contact loss between particles and carbon-binder domain are observed to correlate with the cell degradation. This study unravels that the reaction heterogeneity within the thick cathode caused by the unbalanced electron conduction is the main cause of the battery degradation over cycling. The increased heterogeneity in the system will entail more cathode regions where the degree of active material utilization is uneven, leading to higher probabilities of particle cracking. These findings shed light on the crucial role of the electronic and ionic transportation networks in the performance deterioration of the thick cathode. They also provide guidance for cathode architecture optimization and performance improvement.

Resolving black-hole microstructure with new momentum carriers

All known horizonless black-hole microstate geometries correspond to brane sources that acquire a finite size, and hence break the spherical symmetry of the black hole. We construct, for the first time, solutions with zero horizon area that have the same charges as a three-charge F1-NS5-P Type-IIA black hole and preserve this spherical symmetry. The momentum of these solutions is carried by longitudinal D0-D4 density fluctuations inside the NS5-branes. We argue that these solutions should be interpreted as the long-throat limit of a family of smooth, horizonless microstate geometries, called superstrata, where such geometries degenerate. The existence of these geometries indicates that a finite-size horizon does not appear even in the singular corners of the moduli space of three-charge microstate geometries.

Artificial cathode electrolyte interphase for improving high voltage cycling stability of thick electrode with Co-free 5 V spinel oxides

Spinel-type cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) has intrigued the transportation industry due to its high operating voltage and total elimination of the expensive cobalt element. However, LNMO cathode with high mass loading (> 3 mAh/cm 2 in areal capacity) has suffered from excessive capacity degradation upon long cycling. Here, a robust Al 2 O 3 surface layer is introduced to the thick LNMO electrode via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The capacity retention in full cells with the graphite anode is improved from 46.3% to 75.3% after 300 cycles with cutoff voltage up to 4.85 V, while enabling average Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% during the cycling. The post-mortem analyses reveal that the Al 2 O 3 surface layer would convert to Al-O-F /Al-F species upon cycling, offering stable interphase to protect the cathode material. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the significance of surface modification enabling high voltage cathode for next-generation LIBs.

A stable cathode-solid electrolyte composite for high-voltage, long-cycle-life solid-state sodium-ion batteries

Rechargeable solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SSSBs) hold great promise for safer and more energy-dense energy storage. However, the poor electrochemical stability between current sulfide-based solid electrolytes and high-voltage oxide cathodes has limited their long-term cycling performance and practicality. Here, we report the discovery of the ion conductor Na 3-x Y 1-x Zr x Cl 6 (NYZC) that is both electrochemically stable (up to 3.8 V vs. Na/Na + ) and chemically compatible with oxide cathodes. Its high ionic conductivity of 6.6 × 10 –5 S cm –1 at ambient temperature, several orders of magnitude higher than oxide coatings, is attributed to abundant Na vacancies and cooperative MCl 6 rotation, resulting in an extremely low interfacial impedance. A SSSB comprising a NaCrO 2 + NYZC composite cathode, Na 3 PS 4 electrolyte, and Na-Sn anode exhibits an exceptional first-cycle Coulombic efficiency of 97.1% at room emperature and can cycle over 1000 cycles with 89.3% capacity retention at 40 °C. These findings highlight the immense potential of halides for SSSB applications.

Could Irradiation Introduce Oxidized Oxygen Signals in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Battery Electrodes?

The characterization of oxidized oxygen states through high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) has become a crucial approach for studying the oxygen redox activities in high-energy battery cathodes. However, this approach has been recently challenged due to the concern of irradiation damage. In this work, we revisited a typical Li-rich electrode, Li 1.144 Ni 0.136 Mn 0.544 Co 0.136 O 2 , in both lithiated and delithiated states and evaluated the X-ray irradiation effect in the lengthy mRIXS experiments. Our results show that irradiation cannot introduce any oxidized oxygen feature, and the features of oxidized oxygen are weakened with a high X-ray dose. The results confirm again that mRIXS detects the intrinsic oxidized oxygen state in battery electrodes. However, the distinct irradiation effects in different systems imply that irradiation could selectively target the least stable elemental or chemical states, which should be analyzed with caution in the study of active chemical states.
