Millicharged Condensates on Earth

We demonstrate that long-ranged terrestrial electric fields can be used to exclude or discover ultralight bosonic particles with extremely small charge, beyond that probed by astrophysics. Bound condensates of scalar millicharged particles can be rapidly produced near electrostatic generators or in the atmosphere. If such particles directly couple to the photon, they quickly short out such electrical activity. Instead, for interactions mediated by a kinetically-mixed dark photon, the effects of this condensate are suppressed depending on the size of the kinetic mixing, but may still be directly detected with precision electromagnetic sensors. Analogous condensates can also develop in other theories involving new long-ranged forces, such as those coupled to baryon and lepton number.

Integrated control of edge localized modes and divertor flux using mixed toroidal harmonic resonant magnetic perturbations in EAST

Mixed harmonic resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) for integrated edge localized modes (ELMs) and divertor flux control are demonstrated in EAST target plasmas of low input torque and normalized beta β N ~1.7–1.9, which are close to the equivalent value in ITER high Q operation. The applied RMPs are designed to combine a static harmonic of the toroidal mode number n = 3 with a static or rotating harmonic of n = 2. ELM suppression is achieved without a drop of plasma energy confinement, and tungsten concentration is effectively reduced during the application of RMPs. With mixed harmonics, the toroidal varying steady state heat and particle fluxes on the divertor target can be modified with the rotating n = 2 harmonic, which agrees with the numerical modeling of three-dimensional magnetic topology, with plasma responses being taken into account. ELM suppression correlates with the times of larger n = 3 response with mixed n = 2 and n = 3 RMPs. The mixture of harmonics and the rotating n = 2 harmonic does not require additional coil current because the variation is only in the upper-lower coil current phase space. Furthermore, these results further affirm the effectiveness of integrated ELM and divertor flux control using RMPs with mixed harmonics and improve the understanding of the role of plasma responses in ELM suppression.

Quantum Simulation for High-Energy Physics

It is for the first time that quantum simulation for high-energy physics (HEP) is studied in the U.S. decadal particle-physics community planning, and in fact until recently, this was not considered a mainstream topic in the community. This fact speaks of a remarkable rate of growth of this subfield over the past few years, stimulated by the impressive advancements in quantum information sciences (QIS) and associated technologies over the past decade, and the significant investment in this area by the government and private sectors in the U.S. and other countries. High-energy physicists have quickly identified problems of importance to our understanding of nature at the most fundamental level, from tiniest distances to cosmological extents, that are intractable with classical computers but may benefit from quantum advantage. They have initiated, and continue to carry out, a vigorous program in theory, algorithm, and hardware co-design for simulations of relevance to the HEP mission. This Roadmap is an attempt to bring this exciting and yet challenging area of research to the spotlight, and to elaborate on what the promises, requirements, challenges, and potential solutions are over the next decade and beyond.

Anatomy of the electroweak phase transition for dark sector induced baryogenesis

We investigate the electroweak phase transition patterns for a recently proposed baryogenesis model with CP violation originated in the dark sector. The model includes a complex scalar singlet-Higgs boson portal, a U(1) l gauge lepton symmetry with a Z ' gauge boson portal and a fermionic dark matter particle. We find a novel thermal history of the scalar sector, featuring a Z 2 breaking singlet vacuum in the early Universe driven by a dark Yukawa coupling, that induces a one-step strongly first order electroweak phase transition. We explore the parameter space that generates the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter relic abundance, while being consistent with constraints from electric dipole moment, collider searches, and dark matter direct detection bounds. The complex singlet can be produced via the Higgs portal and decays into Standard Model particles after traveling a certain distance. We explore the reach for long-lived singlet scalars at the 13 TeV Large Hadron Collider with \( \mathcal{L} \) = 139 fb - 1 and show its impact on the parameter space of the model. Setting aside currently unresolved theoretical uncertainties, we estimate the gravitational wave signatures detectable at future observatories.
