Exact-Two-Component Complete Active Space Method with Variational Treatment of Magnetic Field and Spin–Orbit Coupling: Application to X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy

We introduce an exact-two-component complete active space self-consistent-field (X2C-CASSCF) method formulated under the restricted-magnetic-balance condition. This framework allows for the nonperturbative treatment of static magnetic fields using gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAOs). The GIAO-X2C-CASSCF methodology effectively captures all microstates within the same 2J + 1-degenerate manifold and their splitting in a static magnetic field, which are not accessible through single-reference-based methods. We also present mathematical recursive expressions for evaluating one-electron relativistic integrals by using GIAOs in the presence of a finite magnetic field. Benchmark studies include oxygen and nitrogen K-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XMCD) for closed-shell organic compounds, as well as L-edge XMCD spectroscopy for the high-spin open-shell transition metal ion Mn 2+ and the tetrahedral Mn(II)O 4 6– complex.

Artificial-intelligence-driven shot reduction in quantum measurement

Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) provides a powerful solution for approximating molecular ground state energies by combining quantum circuits and classical computers. However, estimating probabilistic outcomes on quantum hardware requires repeated measurements (shots), incurring significant costs as accuracy increases. Optimizing shot allocation is thus critical for improving the efficiency of VQE. Current strategies rely heavily on hand-crafted heuristics requiring extensive expert knowledge. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning (RL)-based approach that automatically learns shot assignment policies to minimize total measurement shots while achieving convergence to the minimum of the energy expectation in VQE. The RL agent assigns measurement shots across VQE optimization iterations based on the progress of the optimization. This approach reduces VQE's dependence on static heuristics and human expertise. When the RL-enabled VQE is applied to a small molecule, a shot reduction policy is learned. The policy demonstrates transferability across systems and compatibility with other wavefunction Ansätze. In addition to these specific findings, this work highlights the potential of RL for automatically discovering efficient and scalable quantum optimization strategies.

Small tensor product distributed active space (STP-DAS) framework for relativistic and non-relativistic multiconfiguration calculations: Scaling from 10 9 on a laptop to 10 12 determinants on a supercomputer

Despite the power and flexibility of configuration interaction (CI) based methods in computational chemistry, their broader application is limited by an exponential increase in both computational and storage requirements, particularly due to the substantial memory needed for excitation lists that are crucial for scalable parallel computing. Here, the objective of this work is to develop a new CI framework, namely, the small tensor product distributed active space (STP-DAS) framework, aimed at drastically reducing memory demands for extensive CI calculations on individual workstations or laptops, while simultaneously enhancing scalability for extensive parallel computing. Moreover, the STP-DAS framework can support various CI-based techniques, such as complete active space (CAS), restricted active space, generalized active space, multireference CI, and multireference perturbation theory, applicable to both relativistic (two- and four-component) and non-relativistic theories, thus extending the utility of CI methods in computational research. We conducted benchmark studies on a supercomputer to evaluate the storage needs, parallel scalability, and communication downtime using a realistic exact-two-component CASCI (X2C-CASCI) approach, covering a range of determinants from 10 9 to 10 12 . Additionally, we performed large X2C-CASCI calculations on a single laptop and examined how the STP-DAS partitioning affects performance.
