Design Principles of Single Atoms on Carbons for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

The study of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries has generated various rationally designed cathodes and modified separators. However, the shuttle of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish kinetics of transformation of LiPSs to Li2S2/Li2S still hinder the achievement of long-life cycling and high-rate of Li-S batteries. Even though several kinds of nanocatalysts have been studied, the catalytic effects for Li-S batteries are not ideal. Single atoms (SAs) with high surface free energy are found to serve as both anchoring and electrocatalytic centers for LiPSs. Furthermore, atomically dispersed metal catalyst on carbon provide conductive and flexible host for dielectric sulfur. Moreover, SAs as the uniform lithiophilic sites can reduce the nucleation overpotential and ensure uniformly plating of Li. In this review, the latest strategies for preparation of SAs supported on carbons are provided on the application of Li-S batteries, including cathode, modified separator and Li metal anode. In addition, it also discusses how SAs with high catalytic activity can help build better Li-S batteries and the design principles for SAs. Finally, the future directions of SAs in energy storage applications is proposed.

Nickel/gallium modified HZSM-5 for ethane aromatization: Influence of metal function on reactivity and stability

Bimetallic catalysts often outperform their monometallic counterparts due to the synergistic effect. Here we reported that the Ni/Ga co-functionalized HZSM-5 catalyst, specifically with Ni 1 /Ga 1 stoichiometric ratio, shows significantly improved selectivity (above 80 %) and stability than the Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst and higher activity (with identical selectivity) than the Ga/HZSM-5 catalyst in ethane aromatization. According to the transient experiment, the Ga and Ni 1 Ga 1 /HZSM-5 catalysts show an induction period of a few minutes. However, for Ni/HZSM-5 and Ni 1 Ga 1/3 /HZSM-5, the induction period increased to >10 min and >30 min, respectively, where up to 100 % of ethane was converted into methane and coke through cracking/hydrogenolysis. Furthermore, based on the generalized power-law equation model, a modified model for deactivation kinetic was proposed. Consequently, the influence of the metal function on the kinetic parameters was discussed. We anticipate the formation of Ni 3 Ga intermetallic alloy and its synergy with the exchanged Ga δ+ to be responsible for optimal BTX formation.

Alternative route for electrochemical ammonia synthesis by reduction of nitrate on copper nanosheets

We propose an efficient and clean avenue for ammonia synthesis, via electroreduction of nitrate which could be obtained from industrial wastewater, domestic sewage, sodium nitrate ore, and nitrification of bacteria and electrochemical oxidation of nitrogen, which addresses the water pollution issues and simultaneously upgrades the nitrate to high-value ammonia. At a low overpotential of -0.15 V versus RHE, Cu nanosheets achieved an ammonia formation rate of 390.1 μg mg -1 Cu h -1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 99.7%, attributed to suppression of the HER activity and apparent improvement of the rate of rate-determining step on Cu (111). Such an ammonia formation rate is more than two orders of magnitude higher than electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction to ammonia. This work not only develops a powerful strategy to the rational design of robust and efficient catalysts by crystal facet engineering, but also provides an alternative route for electrochemical ammonia synthesis by reduction of nitrate.

Atomically Dispersed Iron–Nitrogen Sites on Hierarchically Mesoporous Carbon Nanotube and Graphene Nanoribbon Networks for CO 2 Reduction

Atomically dispersed metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon (M-N/C) catalysts hold great promise for electrochemical CO 2 conversion. However, there is a lack of cost-effective synthesis approaches to meet the goal of economic mass production of single-atom M-N/C with desirable carbon support architecture for efficient CO 2 reduction. Herein, we report facile transformation of commercial carbon nanotube (CNT) into isolated Fe-N 4 sites anchored on carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon (GNR) networks (Fe-N/CNT@GNR). The oxidization-induced partial unzipping of CNT results in the generation of GNR nanolayers attached to the remaining fibrous CNT frameworks, which reticulates a hierarchically mesoporous complex and thus enables a high electrochemical active surface area and smooth mass transport. The Fe residues originating from CNT growth seeds serve as Fe sources to form isolated Fe-N-4 moieties located at the CNT and GNR basal plane and edges with high intrinsic capability of activating CO 2 and suppressing hydrogen evolution. The Fe-N/CNT@GNR delivers a stable CO Faradaic efficiency of 96% with a partial current density of 22.6 mA cm -2 at a low overpotential of 650 mV, making it one of the most active M-N/C catalysts reported. This work presents an effective strategy to fabricate advanced atomistic catalysts and highlights the key roles of support architecture in single-atom electrocatalysis.

Unraveling the Effects of Cobalt on Crystal Growth and Solution Behavior of Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based Dimeric Clusters

We report the synthesis, characterization, and solution self-assembly of plenary Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based transition-metal substituted polyoxometalate, which is obtained by simply adding transition metals (Co 2+ ) into aqueous solution containing cluster [(NbO 2 ) 6 P 2 W 12 O 56 ] 12- , which is obtained by an in situ synthetic method. The incorporation of Co 2+ ions significantly affects the crystal structure, resulting in the formation of a 1D chain-like crystal and the first example of a niobotungstate-based cobalt derivative cluster. The behavior and stability of this cluster in solution are confirmed by time-resolved static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and electrospray mass spectrometry studies.

Atomically dispersed palladium catalyses Suzuki–Miyaura reactions under phosphine-free conditions

Single-atom catalysts have emerged as a new frontier in catalysis science. However, their applications are still limited to small molecule activations in the gas phase, the classic organic transformations catalyzed by single-atom catalysts are still rare. Here, we report the use of a single-atom Pd catalyst for the classic Suzuki–Miyaura carbon–carbon coupling reaction under phosphine-free and open-air conditions at room temperature. The single-atom Pd catalyst is prepared through anchoring Pd on bimetal oxides (Pd-ZnO-ZrO 2 ). The significant synergetic effect of ZnO and ZrO 2 is observed. The catalyst exhibits high activity and tolerance of a wide scope of substrates. Characterization demonstrates that Pd single atoms are coordinated with two oxygen atoms in Pd-ZnO-ZrO 2 catalyst. The catalyst can be fabricated on a multi-gram scale using a simple in situ co-precipitation method, which endows this catalytic system with great potential in practical applications.

High-speed volumetric imaging of formaldehyde in a lifted turbulent jet flame using an acousto-optic deflector

The development of high-speed volumetric laser-induced fluorescence measurements of formaldehyde (CH 2 O-LIF) using a pulse-burst laser operated at a repetition rate of 100 kHz is presented here. A novel laser scanning system employing an acousto-optic deflector (AOD) enables quasi-4D CH 2 O-LIF imaging at a scan frequency of 10 kHz. The diagnostic capability of time-resolved volumetric imaging is demonstrated in a partially premixed DME/air lifted turbulent jet flame near the flame base. Simultaneous imaging of laser beam profiles is performed to account for the laser pulse energy fluctuation and laser sheet inhomogeneity. With the accurate registration of laser sheet positions, the volumetric reconstruction of CH 2 O-LIF signals is performed within a detection volume of 17.3 × 11.9 × 2.3 mm 3 with an average out-of-plane spatial resolution of 250μm. A surface detection algorithm with adaptive thresholding is used to determine the global maximum intensity gradient by calculating gradient percentiles. The flame topology characteristics are investigated by evaluating the 3D curvatures of CH 2 O surfaces. Curvatures calculated using 2D data systematically underestimate the full 3D curvature due to the lack of out-of-plane information. The inner surfaces near the turbulent fuel jet exhibit higher probabilities of large mean curvature than the outer surfaces. The saddle and cylindrical structures are dominant on both the inner and outer surfaces and the elliptic structures occur with lower probability. The results suggest that the damping of turbulent fluctuations by the temperature increase through the CH 2 O region reduces the curvature, but the local structure topology remains self-similar.

Broadband Tunable Mid-infrared Plasmon Resonances in Cadmium Oxide Nanocrystals Induced by Size-Dependent Nonstoichiometry

A central theme of nanocrystal (NC) research involves synthesis of dimension-controlled NCs and study of size-dependent scaling laws governing their optical, electrical, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of monodisperse CdO NCs that exhibit high quality-factor (up to 5.5) mid-infrared (MIR) localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) and elucidate the inverse scaling relationship between carrier concentration and NC size. The LSPR wavelength is readily tunable between 2.4 and similar to 6.0 μm by controlling the size of CdO NCs. Structural and spectroscopic characterization provide strong evidence that free electrons primarily originate from self-doping due to NC surface-induced nonstoichiometry. The ability to probe and to control NC stoichiometry and intrinsic defects will pave the way toward predictive synthesis of doped NCs with desirable LSPR characteristics.

Modularly Constructed Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Based Giant Molecules for Unconventional Nanostructure Fabrication

Controlled assembly of nanoscale building blocks is a promising approach to obtain functional materials with unique properties. In this paper, we report a way to manipulate the supramolecular structures of giant molecules based on discotic triangle cores and isobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (BPOSS) nanoparticles (NPs). It is found that depending upon the number of BPOSS at the periphery of the discotic cores, the packing of these nanoscale components (discotic core and POSS) could be manipulated into either cylindrical or Frank–Kasper (F–K) A15 ($Pm\overline 3n$) phases. The formation of these supramolecular nanostructures is mandated by the balance between the stacking of the discotic cores and the steric hindrance effect of the BPOSS NPs. This strategy to manipulate the packing of nanoscale building blocks for different supramolecular nanostructures including the fabrication of cylindrical structures and A15 ($Pm\overline 3n$) phases may be extended to other nanoscale building blocks for future development of materials with complex structures as well as tailored functionalities and properties.

Oxaliplatin–DNA Adducts as Predictive Biomarkers of FOLFOX Response in Colorectal Cancer: A Potential Treatment Optimization Strategy

FOLFOX is one of the most effective treatments for advanced colorectal cancer (CRC). However, cumulative oxaliplatin neurotoxicity often results in halting the therapy. Oxaliplatin functions predominantly via the formation of toxic covalent drug-DNA adducts. We hypothesize that oxaliplatin-DNA adduct levels formed in vivo in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) are proportional to tumor shrinkage caused by FOLFOX therapy. We further hypothesize that adducts induced by sub-therapeutic "diagnostic microdoses" are proportional to those induced by therapeutic doses and are also predictive of response to FOLFOX therapy. These hypotheses were tested in CRC cell lines and a pilot clinical study. Four CRC cell lines were cultured with therapeutically relevant (100 µM) or diagnostic microdose (1 µM) concentrations of [ 14 C]oxaliplatin. The C-14 label enabled quantification of oxaliplatin-DNA adduct level with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Oxaliplatin-DNA adduct formation was correlated with oxaliplatin cytotoxicity for each cell line as measured by the MTT viability assay. Six CRC patients received by IV a diagnostic microdose containing [ 14 C]oxaliplatin prior to treatment, as well as a second [ 14 C]oxaliplatin dose during FOLFOX chemotherapy, termed a "therapeutic dose." Oxaliplatin-DNA adduct levels from PBMC correlated significantly to mean tumor volume change of evaluable target lesions (5 of the 6 patients had measurable disease). Finally, oxaliplatin-DNA adduct levels were linearly proportional between microdose and therapeutically relevant concentrations in cell culture experiments and patient samples, as was plasma pharmacokinetics, indicating potential utility of diagnostic microdosing.

2D Single-Atom Catalyst with Optimized Iron Sites Produced by Thermal Melting of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) derivatives have recently been demonstrated as one of the most ideal precursors to prepare single-atom metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, abundant single-atom metal sites are buried in the derived carbon nanoparticles, rendering them useless for ORR. In this work, a novel ZIF-8 "thermal melting" strategy is proposed to prepare a high specific surface area of Fe-N-doped graphene nanosheets (Fe-N/GNs) with single-atom Fe-sites on the surface which are accessible to electrolytes, optimizing their utilization and improving ORR activity. As a result, the Fe-N/GNs material exhibits excellent ORR activity with half-wave potentials of 0.903 V in alkaline media and 0.837 V in acidic media, which are comparable to commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Stabilizing Single-Atom Iron Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction via Ceria Confining and Trapping

Atomically dispersed Fe-N-C materials recently hold great interest in costly Pt substitution for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of fuel cells. However, the heat treatment involved in the materials preparation excites Fe aggregating into low activity of nanosized species rather than high activity of single-atom Fe sites. Herein we proposed a new "ceria-assisted" strategy to preferentially generate the active single-atom Fe sites in Fe-N-C materials, which involves oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ adsorption, and subsequent heat treatment. Owing to its spatial confinement and strong trapping for Fe atoms, ceria can effectively suppress agglomeration of isolated Fe atoms and stabilize the Fe atoms by bonding to O in the lattice during the heat treatment, leading to a high content of atomically dispersed Fe (4.6 wt.%). Accordingly, the final catalyst showed ultrahigh ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.915 V and kinetic current density of 7.15 mA cm -2 at 0.9 V. When it was as assembled an anion exchange membrane fuel cell, a large maximum power density of 496 mW cm -2 was achieved.

Asymmetric Composition of Ionic Aggregates and the Origin of High Correlated Transference Number in Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

"Water-in-salt" electrolytes open up exciting new avenues for expanding the electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes. We investigated the solvation structure and dynamics of highly concentrated lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide aqueous electrolyte using experimentally corroborated molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations revealed that the heterogeneous structure of the electrolyte comprises percolating networks of ion and water domains/aggregates. Interestingly, the ionic regions are composed of more TFSI - ions than Li + ions. The Li + -ion transport mechanism was further explored. Li + ions can hop along the coordinated TFSI- ions in the ionic aggregates. The calculated correlated transference number of the 20 m electrolyte is similar to 0.32, which is reasonably high for the high concentration due to a weak negative correlation between the motion of cations and anions within the heterogeneous microscopic domains. These molecular dynamics results connect the heterogeneous structure of the electrolyte to the correlated dynamics of the Li + ion and provide a new understanding of the Li + -ion transport mechanism in this novel electrolyte.

Unexpected electrochemical behavior of an anolyte redoxmer in flow battery electrolytes: solvating cations help to fight against the thermodynamic–kinetic dilemma

Redoxmers are redox-active molecules that can store energy in electrolytes for redox flow batteries (RFBs), and their electrochemical properties are significantly affected by the choice of supporting electrolytes. Herein, we use 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BzNSN) as a model system to scrutinize the supporting electrolyte impact. By systemically varying the components of supporting salts, BzNSN not only shows substantial redox potential shifts but also exhibits varying electrochemical stabilities. Specifically, changing the size of cations can effectively alter the coordination between the supporting salt and BzNSN species. From Li + , Na + , K + , to NEt 4 + , the redox potential of BzNSN shifts negatively, from -1.63 V to -1.82 V vs. Ag/Ag + . Molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulations revealed that smaller cations, like Li + , are closer to the charged BzNSN when coordinated, implying stronger coordination, while larger cations, like K + and NEt 4 + , are farther away. Interestingly, the large cation electrolytes also lead to much improved electrochemical stability, evidenced by the extraordinarily enhanced kinetic lifetime from electron paramagnetic resonance measurement. This study demonstrates the first example of tuning an anolyte redoxmer toward a concurrent improvement of lowered redox potentials AND enhanced calendar lives via solvation means, which is usually constrained by the thermodynamic–kinetic relation.
