Cyber-physical security framework for Photovoltaic Farms

With the evolution of PV converters, a growing number of vulnerabilities in PV farms are exposing to cyber threats. To mitigate the influence of cyber-attack on PV farms, it is necessary to study attacks' impact and propose detection methods. To meet this requirement, a cyber-physical security framework is proposed for PV farms. Data integrity attacks (DIAs) are studied on different control loops. As μPMU is gaining in popularity, a lower sampling rate of μPMU data is applied to develop a detection algorithm. We have evaluated two data-driven methods, which are support vector machine (SVM) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Lastly, the data-driven methods verify the feasibility of μPMU data in attack detection.

Data-driven Cyberattack Detection for Photovoltaic (PV) Systems through Analyzing Micro-PMU Data

With increasing exposure to software-based sensing and control, Photovoltaic (PV) systems are facing higher risks of cyber attacks. Here, to ensure the system stability and minimize potential economic losses, it is imperative to monitor operating states and detect attacks at the early stage. To meet this demand, Micro-Phasor Measurement Units (μPMU) are increasingly popular in monitoring distribution networks. However, due to the relatively low sampling rate, μPMU has not yet been used to detect and classify cyber-attacks in power electronics enabled smart grid. To our knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to use μPMU to detect cyber attacks that degrade the performance of power electronics systems. We propose to apply data-driven methods on micro-PMU data to implement attack detection. We have evaluated data-driven methods, including decision tree (DT), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), long short-term memory (LSTM) and convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed CNN model achieves the required performances with the highest 99.23% accuracy and 0.9963 F 1 score.

EMPIRICAL VALIDATION OF MULTI-ZONE BUILDING AND HVAC SYSTEM MODELS UNDER UNCERTAINTY

This study implemented a framework of empirical validation of building energy models under uncertainty to a set of controlled experiments that aim to validate multi-zone building and HVAC system models. Energy models were created through iterative acquisitions of information and data and uses measurement data from various types of sensors as both inputs and as observations to validate predictions. Experimental and modeling uncertainties were quantified and propagated accordingly, and probabilistic accuracy metrics were used to evaluate the agreement between model predictions and observations under uncertainty. Sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the most influential uncertainties that will be prioritized to be addressed in the next steps. Current results of two cooling tests show an overall good agreement between predictions and observations on a set of HVAC system outputs despite considerable and influential uncertainty in DX cooling coil COP. Agreements on zone-level responses vary notably among individual rooms, likely because of significant uncertainties in room radiation heat gain and system supply air.

Prenatal Ultrasound Analysis of Umbilical‐Portal‐Systemic Venous Shunts Concurrent With Trisomy 21

Objectives A classification termed umbilical‐portal‐systemic venous shunt (UPSVS) for an abnormal umbilical vein (UV), portal vein (PV), and ductus venosus (DV) was proposed recently. According to this classification, there are 3 types of UPSVSs: types I, II, and III. Trisomy 21 associated with UV‐PV‐DV anomalies has been described, but the incidence of trisomy 21 in UPSVS cases, the relationship between UPSVS types and trisomy 21, and the pregnancy outcome are poorly documented. This study aimed to address these issues. Methods All UPSVS cases diagnosed at our department from 2016 to 2019 were retrospectively studied. The English literature describing UV‐PV‐DV anomalies and trisomy 21 from 2000 to 2019 was searched, and the retrieved cases were analyzed. Results Four of 20 UPSVS cases identified by us also had trisomy 21, with 2 type I and 2 type II UPSVSs. Ultrasound markers of Down syndrome were observed in all 4 cases that underwent termination of pregnancy (TOP). The literature search retrieved 12 reports including 279 patients, with 29 also having trisomy 21, giving a pooled trisomy 21 incidence rate of 10.4%. Of the 29 cases, 16 had type I, and 9 had type II, whereas UPSVS types in 4 were undeterminable, and 22 cases underwent TOP. Conclusions There is a high incidence of trisomy 21 in UPSVS cases. Trisomy 21 is associated with a type I or II UPSVS. Most cases with the combined defect underwent TOP. These findings may be used to direct prenatal counseling and management of the combined condition.

Detection and Diagnosis of Data Integrity Attacks in Solar Farms Based on Multilayer Long Short-Term Memory Network

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming more vulnerable to cyber threats. In response to this emerging concern, developing cyber-secure power electronics converters has received increased attention from the IEEE Power Electronics Society that recently launched a cyber-physical-security initiative. Here this letter proposes a deep sequence learning based diagnosis solution for data integrity attacks on PV systems in smart grids, including dc–dc and dc–ac converters. The multilayer long short-term memory networks are used to leverage time-series electric waveform data from current and voltage sensors in PV systems. The proposed method has been evaluated in a PV smart grid benchmark model with extensive quantitative analysis. As a comparison, we have evaluated classic data-driven methods, including K-nearest neighbor, decision tree, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and convolutional neural network. Comparison results verify performances of the proposed method for detection and diagnosis of various data integrity attacks on PV systems.

Enhanced thermoelectric efficiency in nanocrystalline bismuth telluride nanotubes

We report on the thermal and thermoelectric properties of individual nanocrystalline Bi 2 Te 3 nanotubes synthesized by the solution phase method using 3ω method and a microfabricated testbench. Measurements show that the nanotubes offer improved ZT compared to bulk Bi 2 Te 3 near room temperature due to an enhanced Seebeck coefficient and suppressed thermal conductivity. This improvement in ZT originates from the nanocrystalline nature and low dimensionality of the nanotubes. Domain boundary filtering of low-energy electrons provides an enhanced Seebeck coefficient. The scattering of phonons at the surface of the nanotube leads to suppressed thermal conductivity. These have been theoretically analyzed using the Boltzmann equation based on the relaxation time approximation and Landauer approach. This work clearly demonstrates the possibility of achieving enhancement in thermoelectric efficiency by combining nanocrystalline and low-dimensional systems.

Structural distortion and electron redistribution in dual-emitting gold nanoclusters

Deciphering the complicated excited-state process is critical for the development of luminescent materials with controllable emissions in different applications. Here we report the emergence of a photo-induced structural distortion accompanied by an electron redistribution in a series of gold nanoclusters. Such unexpected slow process of excited-state transformation results in near-infrared dual emission with extended photoluminescent lifetime. We demonstrate that this dual emission exhibits highly sensitive and ratiometric response to solvent polarity, viscosity, temperature and pressure. Thus, a versatile luminescent nano-sensor for multiple environmental parameters is developed based on this strategy. Furthermore, we fully unravel the atomic-scale structural origin of this unexpected excited-state transformation, and demonstrate control over the transition dynamics by tailoring the bi-tetrahedral core structures of gold nanoclusters. Overall, this work provides a substantial advance in the excited-state physical chemistry of luminescent nanoclusters and a general strategy for the rational design of next-generation nano-probes, sensors and switches.

Effects of Surface Terminations of 2D Bi 2 WO 6 on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Water Splitting

Two-dimensional (2D)-structured photocatalysts with atomically thin layers not only have the potential to enhance hydrogen generation efficiency but also allow more direct investigations of the effects of surface terminations on photocatalytic activity. In this work, taking 2D Bi 2 WO 6 as a model, we found that the configuration of bilayer Bi 2 O 2 sandwiched by alternating WO 4 layers enabled the thermodynamic driving potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Without Pt deposition, the H 2 generation efficiency can reach to 56.9 μmol/g/h by 2D Bi 2 WO 6 as compared with no activity of Bi 2 WO 6 nanocrystals under simulated solar light. This configuration is easily functionalized by adsorption of Cl – /Br – to form Bi–Cl/Bi–Br bonds, which leads to the decrease of recombination in photogenerated charge carriers and narrower band gaps. This work highlights an effective way to design photocatalysts with efficient hydrogen evolution by tuning the surface terminations.

Green synthesis of reduced Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with enhanced conductivity, oxidation stability, and SERS activity

Transition metal carbides (MXenes) are an emerging family of highly conductive two-dimensional materials with additional functional properties introduced by surface terminations. Further modification of the surface terminations makes MXenes even more appealing for practical applications. Herein, we report a facile and environmentally benign synthesis of reduced Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (r-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a simple treatment with L-ascorbic acid at room temperature. r-Ti 3 C 2 T x shows a six-fold increase in electrical conductivity, from 471 ± 49 for regular Ti 3 C 2 T x to 2819 ± 306 S m -1 for the reduced version. Additionally, we show an enhanced oxidation stability of r-Ti 3 C 2 T x as compared to regular Ti 3 C 2 T x . An examination of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity reveals that the SERS enhancement factor of r-Ti 3 C 2 T x is an order of magnitude higher than that of regular Ti 3 C 2 T x . The improved SERS activity of r-Ti 3 C 2 T x is attributed to the charge transfer interaction between the MXene surface and probe molecules, re-enforced by an increased electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level of r-Ti 3 C 2 T x . The findings of this study suggest that reduced MXene could be a superior choice over regular MXene, especially for the applications that employ high electronic conductivity, such as electrode materials for batteries and supercapacitors, photodetectors, and SERS-based sensors.

A Model for Turbulence Spectra in the Equilibrium Range of the Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Stratification can cause turbulence spectra to deviate from Kolmogorov's isotropic -5/3 power law scaling in the universal equilibrium range at high Reynolds numbers. However, a consensus has not been reached with regard to the exact shape of the spectra. Here we propose a shape of the turbulent kinetic energy and temperature spectra in horizontal wavenumber for the equilibrium range that consists of three regimes at small Froude number: the buoyancy subrange, a transition region, and the isotropic inertial subrange through dimensional analysis and substantial revision of previous theoretical approximation. These spectral regimes are confirmed by various observations in the atmospheric boundary layer. The representation of the transition region in direct numerical simulations will require large-scale separation between the Dougherty-Ozmidov scale and the Kolmogorov scale for strongly stratified turbulence at high Reynolds numbers, which is still challenging computationally. In addition, we suggest that the failure of Monin-Obukhov similarity theory in the very stable atmospheric boundary layer is due to the fact that it does not consider the buoyancy scale that characterizes the transition region.

Quantum Griffiths singularities in TiO superconducting thin films with insulating normal states

A superconductor–metal transition (SMT) with an unconventional diverging dynamic critical exponent was recently discovered, and it drew tremendous attention because this signature of a quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) was thought to be a common characteristic of low-disorder crystalline superconductors. However, because the QGS was observed only in limited materials with metallic normal states, the question of whether the QGS exists in other superconducting systems is still unanswered. In this paper, a superconductor–insulator transition (SIT) is observed in TiO thin films with insulating normal states, which offers a more universal platform for investigating the QGS. A thickness-tuned SIT is obtained when the magnetic field is zero. Importantly, a magnetic field-tuned SIT with a diverging dynamic critical exponent, which is direct evidence of a QGS, is observed in TiO thin films with different thicknesses. By constructing a comprehensive phase diagram, it is demonstrated that the critical magnetic field H c tends to saturate as the temperature approaches 0 K, which is different from the upturn trend of H c observed in SMT systems and probably due to the weaker Josephson coupling of the locally ordered superconducting islands (rare regions) in a weakly insulating normal state background. The results extend the QGS scenario from only SMT systems to SIT systems, and they provide vital evidence that QGSs are common in crystalline superconducting thin films, which has possible applications in quantum-computing devices.
