Dynamic control and quantification of active sites on ceria for CO activation and hydrogenation

Ceria (CeO 2 ) is a widely used oxide catalyst, yet the nature of its active sites remains elusive. This study combines model and powder catalyst studies to elucidate the structure-activity relationships in ceria-catalyzed CO activation and hydrogenation. Well-defined ceria clusters are synthesized on planar CeO 2 (111) and exhibit dynamic and tunable ranges of Ce coordination numbers, which enhance their interaction with CO. Reduced ceria clusters (e.g., Ce 3 O 3 ) bind CO strongly and facilitate its dissociation, while near-stoichiometric clusters (e.g., Ce 3 O 7 ) adsorb CO weakly and promote oxidation via carbonate formation. Unlike planar ceria surfaces, supported ceria clusters exhibit dynamic properties and enhanced catalytic activity, that mimic those of powder ceria catalysts. Insight from model studies provide a method to quantify active sites on powder ceria and guide further optimization of ceria catalysts for syngas conversion. This work marks a leap toward model-guided catalyst design and highlights the importance of site-specific catalysis.

Optically controlling the competition between spin flips and intersite spin transfer in a Heusler half-metal on sub–100-fs time scales

The direct manipulation of spins via light may provide a path toward ultrafast energy-efficient devices. However, distinguishing the microscopic processes that can occur during ultrafast laser excitation in magnetic alloys is challenging. Here, we study the Heusler compound Co 2 MnGa, a material that exhibits very strong light-induced spin transfers across the entire M-edge. By combining the element specificity of extreme ultraviolet high-harmonic probes with time-dependent density functional theory, we disentangle the competition between three ultrafast light-induced processes that occur in Co 2 MnGa: same-site Co-Co spin transfer, intersite Co-Mn spin transfer, and ultrafast spin flips mediated by spin-orbit coupling. By measuring the dynamic magnetic asymmetry across the entire M-edges of the two magnetic sublattices involved, we uncover the relative dominance of these processes at different probe energy regions and times during the laser pulse. Our combined approach enables a comprehensive microscopic interpretation of laser-induced magnetization dynamics on time scales shorter than 100 femtoseconds.

Tin Metal Improves the Lithiation Kinetics of High-Capacity Silicon Anodes

Si-based anodes present a great promise for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. However, its commercialization is largely hindered by a grand challenge of a rapid capacity fade. Here, we demonstrate excellent cycling stability on a Si-Sn thin film electrode that outperforms pure Si or Sn counterpart under the similar conditions. Combined with the first-principles calculations, in situ transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a reduced volume expansion, increased conductivity, as well as dynamic rearrangement upon lithiation of the Si-Sn film. Here we attribute the improved lithiation kinetics to the formation of a conductive matrix that comprises a mosaic of nanostructured Sn, Li y Sn (specifically, Li 7 Sn 2 develops around the lithiation potential of Si), and Li x Si. This work provides an important advance in understanding the lithiation mechanism of Si-based anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Distributed Optimization in Distribution Systems: Use Cases, Limitations, and Research Needs

We report electric distribution grid operations typically rely on both centralized optimization and local non-optimal control techniques. As an alternative, distribution system operational practices can consider distributed optimization techniques that leverage communications among various neighboring agents to achieve optimal operation. With the rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), distributed optimization algorithms are growing in importance due to their potential advantages in scalability, flexibility, privacy, and robustness relative to centralized optimization. Implementation of distributed optimization offers multiple challenges and also opportunities. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in distributed optimization for electric distribution systems and classifications using key attributes. Problem formulations and distributed optimization algorithms are provided for example use cases, including volt/var control, market clearing process, loss minimization, and conservation voltage reduction. Finally, this paper also presents future research needs for the applicability of distributed optimization algorithms in the distribution system.

Extracellular IL-37 promotes osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells via autophagy

The osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) contribute to restoration and regeneration of dental tissue. Previous study indicated that interleukin-37 (IL-37) was an anti-inflammatory factor that affected other pro-inflammatory signals. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of IL-37 on the differentiation of DPSCs. DPSCs were cultured in growth medium with different concentrations of IL-37. We selected the optimal concentration for the following experiments by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity analysis, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. Cell counting kit assay (CCK-8) and 5-Ethynyl-2-Deoxyuridine (EdU) assay were conducted to assess the effects of IL-37 on the proliferation of DPSCs. ALP activity assay and staining, alizarin red S (ARS) staining, qRT‐PCR, Western blot as well as immunofluorescence staining were conducted to assess differentiation ability of DPSCs. Western blot, immunofluorescence staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to examine cell autophagy. Results showed that IL-37 enhanced the osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation ability of DPSCs with no significant influence on the proliferation of DPSCs. Autophagy in DPSCs was activated by IL-37. Activation of autophagy enhanced osteogenesis and odontogenesis of DPSCs, whereas inhibition of autophagy suppressed DPSCs osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation. In conclusion, IL-37 increased osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation via autophagy.

Non-equilibrium insertion of lithium ions into graphite

Graphite has been regarded as the most important anode material for currently used lithium-ion batteries due to its two-dimensional (2D) nature hosting ionic intercalations. However, the kinetic insertion of Li ions is still not well known microscopically. In this work, we investigate the real-time intercalation process of Li ions using in situ transmission electron microscopy. We observe the lithium insertion process at the atomic scale, in which the graphite layers undergo expansion, forming wrinkles and finally inhomogeneous cracks as the Li ions accumulate, different from the proposed models. Leveraging on theoretical simulations, Li-ion migration driven by an external electrical field is suggested to be induced into the irreversible wrinkled structures. This non-equilibrium behavior that occur in lithium-ion batteries can be more pronounced at a high charging rate, which will practically degrade the capacity of graphite. Furthermore, this work unveils the reaction scenario of the non-equilibrium Li-ion insertion, which benefits the understanding of the performance of graphite-based energy-storage devices.

A highly efficient atomically thin curved PdIr bimetallene electrocatalyst

Abstract The multi-metallene with an ultrahigh surface area has great potential in precise tuning of surface heterogeneous d-electronic correlation by surface strain effect for the distinctive surface electronic structure, which is a brand new class of promising 2D electrocatalyst for sustainable energy device application. However, achieving such an atomically thin multi-metallene still presents a great challenge. Herein, we present a new synthetic method for an atomic-level palladium-iridium (PdIr) bimetallene with an average thickness of only ∼1.0 nm for achieving superior catalysis in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). The curved PdIr bimetallene presents a top-ranked high electrochemical active area of 127.5 ± 10.8 m2 gPd+Ir−1 in the reported noble alloy materials, and exhibits a very low overpotential, ultrahigh activity and improved stability for HER and FAOR. DFT calculation reveals that the PdIr bimetallene herein has a unique lattice tangential strain, which can induce surface distortion while concurrently creating a variety of concave-convex featured micro-active regions formed by variously coordinated Pd sites agglomeration. Such a strong strain effect correlates the abnormal on-site active 4d10-t2g-orbital Coulomb correlation potential and directly elevates orbital-electronegativity exposure within these active regions, resulting in a preeminent barrier-free energetic path for significant enhancement of FAOR and HER catalytic performance.

Intelligent nanomedicine integrating diagnosis and therapy

A method of controlling the activity of a biologically active compound. The method concerns an oligonucleotide-based compound, comprising a hairpin-forming oligonucleotide, an effector moiety physically associated with the oligonucleotide, where the effector moiety possesses a biological activity, and a regulating moiety physically associated with the oligonucleotide, where the regulating moiety controls the biological activity of the effector moiety by interacting with the effector moiety. The oligonucleotide can assume a hairpin configuration, where the effector and regulating moieties interact, or an open configuration, where the effector and regulating moieties fail to interact. Depending on the nature of the effector and regulating moieties, either configuration can result in the expression of the biological activity of the effector moiety.
