NASA HUNCH Hardware

High School students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) partners NASA centers with high schools and middle schools in states across the nation. The HUNCH program is a school-based innovative program that promotes student interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. While students are building hardware, softgoods, prototypes, or experiments for NASA, they are also building their interest as researchers, as well as their self-confidence. The 2015-2016 school year marks the 13th year of the HUNCH program while this is the second year of the HUNCH program at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). This year GRC partnered with 6 schools where students built various components needed to assemble International Space Station Single Stowage Locker flight hardware. In addition, Glenn worked with a new school on the Softgoods program and hosted all 7 schools along with 4 Design and Prototype schools with a recognition ceremony and tours at NASA Glenns Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, OH. Highlights from the work that the GRC schools did throughout the school year will be presented.

Space Power Facility Reverberation Chamber Calibration Report

This document describes the process and results of calibrating the Space Environmental Test EMI Test facility at NASA Plum Brook Space Power Facility according to the specifications of IEC61000-4-21 for susceptibility testing from 100 MHz to 40 GHz. The chamber passed the field uniformity test, in both the empty and loaded conditions, making it the world's largest Reverberation Chamber.

Manager's Role in Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Control

This presentation captures the essence of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering from a project manager's perspective. It explains the basics of EMC and the benefits to the project of early incorporation of EMC best practices. The EMC requirement products during a project life cycle are identified, along with the requirement verification methods that should be utilized. The goal of the presentation is to raise awareness and simplify the mystique surrounding electromagnetic compatibility for managers that have little or no electromagnetics background

NASA Applications for Computational Electromagnetic Analysis

Computational Electromagnetic Software is used by NASA to analyze the compatibility of systems too large or too complex for testing. Recent advances in software packages and computer capabilities have made it possible to determine the effects of a transmitter inside a launch vehicle fairing, better analyze the environment threats, and perform on-orbit replacements with assured electromagnetic compatibility.

Design of an automated imaging system for use in a space experiment

An experiment, occurring in an orbiting platform, examines the mass transfer across gas-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces. It employs an imaging system with real time image analysis. The design includes optical design, imager selection and integration, positioner control, image recording, software development for processing and interfaces to telemetry. It addresses the constraints of weight, volume, and electric power associated with placing the experiment in the Space Shuttle cargo bay. Challenging elements of the design are: imaging and recording of a 200-micron-diameter bubble with a resolution of 2 microns to serve a primary source of data; varying frame rates from 500 per second to 1 frame per second, depending on the experiment phase; and providing three-dimensional information to determine the shape of the bubble.
