Microwave resonance lamp absorption technique for measuring temperature and OH number density in combustion environments

A simple technique for simultaneous determination of temperature and OH number density is described, along with characteristic results obtained from measurements using a premixed, hydrogen air flat flame burner. The instrumentation is based upon absorption of resonant radiation from a flowing microwave discharge lamp, and is rugged, relatively inexpensive, and very simple to operate.

Supersonic combustion performance of hydrogen/hydrocarbon mixtures as determined by a nonintrusive temperature monitor

A simple and reliable OH absorption technique was developed and applied to measure path integrated temperature and OH number density in scramjet combustor hardware. The first series of measurements was made in premixed combustion products at the exit of a Mach 2 nozzle mounted on a hydrogen fueled vitiated heater. The second series of tests was conducted during supersonic combustion evaluation of hydrogen/hydrocarbon fuel mixtures. These measurements were made near the exit of a 48-inch long diverging supersonic combustor. The OH number density measurements indicated that both the nozzle and the combustor flow were not in equilibrium.

Molecular flow velocity using Doppler shifted Raman spectroscopy

Measurements of molecular flow velocity, static pressure, and translational temperature in the free-stream of a supersonic wind tunnel and behind the shock of a simple model are reviewed. Based on the free-stream demonstration using inverse Raman spectroscopy, an experiment is outlined to investigate the lee-side flow field above a swept delta wing and simulated spectra expected for the leading-edge vortex are included. The extension of the technique to hypersonic wind tunnels is also explored through the use of simulated spectra.
